    i think its probably smoother because it doesn't incorporate the bass drum a lot.
    This music is so relaxing x3

    I was smiling through this whole video, that was absolutely great. I've been a guitar player for quite a while and I'm just starting drums tomorrow, and this has given me a new inspiration for both the instruments. Jazz is so beautiful.

    I like this and I,ve chosen this video as it,s "play along" to make some comments.
    There is so much more to drumming than flams drags and paradiddles I,ve yet
    to visit a tutorial that covers the aspect of backing soloists which mainly what
    drumming is all about. We are not soloists in the main and so should concentrate
    on enhancing the playing of the sax ,
    trumpet or whatever. Believe me after 62 yrs.
    of drumming the guys out front will thank you for it and you will be sort after.
    More later!

    I don't think you're right.. He's playing the bass drum a lot but dinamics are all there. Mike can really play it smooth when he wants to, amazing! I can't control my bass drum's volume that well...damn!

    Flat wound strings can be steel as well. I hear a magnetic pickup located near the bridge though. Definitely a magnetic pickup but a touch of piezo as well. Really cool tone.
    It doesn't really matter who's right, we can all agree this guy sounds good.

  • @GucciBoysShouldDie

    The bass player kicks ass really. His bass doesn´t have freds on it ! :D

    The biggest issues I found when I used to play traditional grip primarily were a) it's MUCH harder to maintain, you have to practise a LOT not to lose your top-end power and speed, and it's also more awkward for moving around the kit. Fortunately, however, Virgil Donati was my inspiration so I still made it work :) I've been playing matched primarily since about 2005 now, though, it's just working better for me these days.

  • @natcarmusic
    @natcarmusic 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Traditional grip gives the left hand more finesse but less power (arguably) than a matched grip. Since a lot of moving around the kit is done with the right hand, the left hand doesn't get away from the snare so often, so it's not so important that the two have equal range and power around the whole kit. Also, a lot of jazz drumming calls for cross-sticking, especially in Latin styles, and this is much easier to swap to with a traditional grip. In the end, though, it's preference all the way.

  • @vfpvik
    @vfpvik 15 ปีที่แล้ว

    @PJWTh3R41N so true, im a rock drummer, and theres nothing like a good jazz player. rock gets hard when it gets hard, but usually its not really that bad. jazz, another world. :)

  • @Etherion
    @Etherion 16 ปีที่แล้ว

    Arguably, man. There is quite a bit of drumming out there that can easily be on par with jazz (often due to jazz influences, but not to be ignored.) drumming as well. I mean, odd meter can be confusing for anything...
    I could name quite a few bands with some odd but unique patterns though worth checking out..Slipknot and all that isn't all that technical though. Blasting is what it is, it's cool musically (when applied well) and it takes a lot of chops.
    Extreme drumming and jazz are different.

    for the people who said metal druming is crap, check out arsis or necrophagist. if you think that the drumming in those bands latest albums is crap, or any part of the music rather... you are either in denial or deaf dumb and blind to technical prowess.
    you dont have to listen to our music. we like it that way.
    but us smart metalers dont insult your musicians as a whole or make ourselves out to be better than you.... even though we play the most physically challenging music there is. thanks.

  • @TimDaleDrums
    @TimDaleDrums 15 ปีที่แล้ว

    @MrZol: In jazz you don't use the bass drum like you do in rock. in a rock beat you use the bass drum to keep time where as in jazz you use the hi-hat

  • @RandyLott
    @RandyLott 16 ปีที่แล้ว

    Check out progressive rock and progressive metal. That is great musicianship as well as jazz. They incorporate jazz, rock, eastern music, tribal and the list goes on. It's more of a musical journey, really fascinating.
    Dream Theater, The Flower Kings and Opeth(Damnation- record) is a good start.

    While his elitist attitude is kind of messed up, he has a point. I love a wide array of music (rock and jazz included) and the purity of Jazz is always pretty cool. Nothing but you're own personal style carrying you, not crazy, innovative distortion or effects.

    @lucasloud it's common for swing to become straighter as it gets faster. at this speed he's swinging just fine.
