  • Hi guys. We have several different crashes today.
As usual: I'm not looking to make fun of anyone or put down anyone. It's all about looking at crashes or incidents that
happened and learning something from them.
Let's start with the first clip.
Action is taking place in South Africa at Vaal Dam.
On 16 June 2011, a small group of friends went to the Vaal Dam to take advantage of the strong wind forecast. The guy underestimated the conditions and made a series of bad judgments resulting in a very serious kiting accident on land, which resulted in a severe compression fracture of his spine(T12 vertebra).
Something is already wrong when the kite is still close to the ground on the right side. It seems the kiter did not want to come close to another lying kite so he tried to redirect his kite to 12 o'clock. However he is not under control of his kite. He is not even handling the bar with his both hands. For a novice kiter is quite dangerous situation. Especially when you are close to the trees. And the kite goes exactly into the tree. The only way here to escape the upcoming disaster is to release safety mechanism and to detach safety leash so the kiter will not have any connection to the kite.
When the lines are tangled in the branches it can become really dangerous. Now you can't predict the kite behavior and you can not control the kite. The kite becomes unpredictable. In such wind it becomes a powerfull tough machine. The kiter was lifted up about 4 meters and then with the same speed he felt down on the ground breaking his spine. These are several XRay shots from clinic. Definitely not a happy end.
Trees are very dangerous. This is another similar situation. (To show second video short clip). Here the kiter was lifted up as well. The only thing is that the tree is smaller and those people nearby were holding him. He landed more safely in this case.
Here are several other episodes with trees.
If you are just starting kitesurfing try to keep away from trees as much as possible. Especially in strong winds.
Another video shows a clash with another kiter in the water. Both kiters are riding same direction at first. The kiter behind is too close to the one in front. It seems the kiter in front looses his control of the kite. Maybe he tried to jump as well... So once the first kiter looses the control of his kite the second one does not have time to react. This is causing the kites to crash. The second kiter has a good reaction and releases the kite fast enough. This is a happy end of a kite crash.
Always is better to keep safe distance from front kiter. And when I ride near other guys I try to look back before making any maneuver or a jump. Keep in mind also that the front kiter can loose control of his kite suddenly.
    Here comes the last video.
What would you do if your bar broke? I think the best way is to release safe mechanism and to do a self rescue. This is exaclty what this kiter is doing after his bar broke. He gave himself some time to think for the better option and released it. With a broken bar is hard to wrap the lines fast so he ends up near his kite with lines around him in the water. Not a safe place to be in. After he will need another 3-4 hours to untangle the lines at home. He ends up with another guy who helps him to drag him to the shore. And from my experience to drag another person to the shore while being on the board is very very hard. So the best way is for both guys to have the board underneath in hand and 1 kite to drag 2 people to the shore. It is quite fast way to get to the shore.
To end this video - here is a suggestion how to eliminate another kiter from competition.
Thank you guys for watching. Give thumbs up and see you soon:)
