Nobody can choose his own parents. So what does that have to do with his music and message to the world? His love for China, the nation he was born and raised in, and his actions determine what he is. Cui Jian is a great man with great hopes for the Chinese people! Choose unity and work toward our goals... And bove all, be true to your own dreams! Now tell me... Does your arguing and fighting over ethnicity fit in his message?
I went to his tour in 89-90 when I lived in Xi'an. I'd never heard of him before. I loved it, especially this song. I bought the cassette and practically wore Fake Monk out!
There were a lot of Koreans who fled to Manchuria during the Japanese occupation about 70 years ago and they are referred to as "Joseonjok". They're ethnic Koreans but they live in China and probably will keep living there! I wouldn't know what ethnic race he is because I'm not him! But if this what you guys are arguing about, I'll just tell you right now.. No one will ever know for sure what nationality he is. I hope that helped clear up some misunderstandings ^-^' btw amazing song and band! :D
Lyrics continued: One day I will be going far away. I do not like to stay at one place, neither to have anyone following me. I only want to watch your beautiful face, but not to know your suffering. I wish to receive heavenly rains, but not to get your tears. I do not want to believe there really are evils, neither want to hurt anyone. You will never know who I am and will never tell that I am a fake.
Check out this guy's history, man. His song, I Have Nothing, was played at Tiananmen Square. He was a classically trained trumpet player under Mao who became the "Father of Chinese Rock". Do you know anything about Mao? He banned all but 8 pieces of music. That's bad ass. Check out the song where he wears a red cloth over his eyes. This guy is more punk than Sid Vicious ever tried to be.
Wiki him. If you listen to his songs over the years, his style has obviously changed and grown. But more importantly, he's been the father of Chinese Rock and Roll and probably its most famous protest singer.
emptyna... I'm pretty sure his Korean ancestors only moved to China within the last 200 years. There were a lot of Koreans who moved to Manchuria during the Japanese occupation, and there were enough of them that the government even gave them their autonomous region. Both of Cui Jian's parents are ethnic Korean.
My translation of lyrics: I walked from the south to the north. I wondered from the days to the nights. I want everybody to see me, but do not want anyone to know me. If you can see that I am a little tired, please pour me a bowl of water. If you have fallen in love with me, please kiss me in my mouth. I have my feet and I have my legs. I have those mountains and I have those rivers. I want everything but hatred and grief. If you really love me, you will never be afraid to regret.
@lacedoll7111 Japanese and Korean came from China? Not sure if DNA proves that. It is not so my friend. His parents were Korean born but He was born in China. So He's Chinese citizen. His family did not come 1000 years ago. haha If that was the case, then He is Chinese. He is 2nd generation but come on, if he wasn't big, No Chinese will accept him!
@jovitheman Why're you here to stay if you don't like it? :P Go listen to music that you enjoy, and don't waste your time or other people's by posting hurtful comments that the music artist himself most likely won't even read, and therefore the comment will have no point aside from making you look silly.
There are 56 ethnic groups in China. The majority is Han, and the rest are minorities, including "Chao Xian" which is what you call "Korean" today. These minorities have been living in China for centuries. Cui Jian is ethnically Chao Xian but he, and his ancestors, were all born and grow up in China. So he is Chinese.
@miknawoos to be honest with you, 5000 years ago, japanese, korean are all from china. cuz china is the place where human civilazation begins. CUIJIAN is a Chinese not a Korean for sure. new r u saying that John Lennon is from Rome?!
If you still want the subtitle of this song -- go to "zzenzero channel". zzenzero not only posted the subtitle on the video, he also included a detailed biography of Cui Jian.
I love Cui Jian, and this recording is just brilliant. Many thanks for posting it, Mr Wong.

His lyrics like poems. He combines chinese instruments into his songs, so great!

no he's not originally from Korea, he is ethically Korean, in terms of cultural upbringing and nationality, i think he's 100% Chinese

For those who'd like to play it: the chords are Am, F, F#m, F, E...
这首曲子我挺喜欢唱。
"我不想留在一个地方"。。。

Mandarin with a strong Beijing accent.
This song is amazing! I wish I understood what he sung >
He's a Chinese citizen of Korean descent.
@miknawoos to be honest with you, 5000 years ago, japanese, korean are all from china. cuz china is the place where human civilazation begins. CUIJIAN is a Chinese not a Korean for sure. new r u saying that John Lennon is from Rome?!
Umm, so he's ethnically Korean but grew up in Beijing? That would make him Chinese, not sure what you find so mind-blowing about this.

Hua Chenyu brought me here! So this is the original version. This is classic!
