- NPR Music's Tiny Desk series will celebrate Black History Month with Tiny Desk (home) concerts featuring legends in the world of R&B, jazz, gospel, and hip-hop. Each artist in this legacy lineup has helped to define Black music as we know it and will be performing a Tiny Desk concert for the first time.

The first song in Patti LaBelle's Tiny Desk (home) concert sets the tone and quickly sums up the entire 15-minute performance. "Something Special (Is Gonna Happen Tonight)" from her 1986 album Winner In You is a highlight from one of many chapters in her fabulous career. A backstage corner of a concert hall in Austin, Texas, is transformed into Patti's world, furnished with a throne, flowers and trunks full of shoes. Options are a must, given a knack for kicking off her shoes during shows. The entire band managed to fit onto the set: thirteen people, including fierce background vocals, keys, horns and more, to recreate some of the best from the Godmother of Soul.
LaBelle and company go straight into hits mode after the first number. "Love, Need and Want You" is delivered with the same vibrancy as the 1983 original, with a wink to another hit, "Dilemma," by Nelly, who sampled it 19 years later. The ballads continue with "If Only You Knew." She closes with the anthem "Lady Marmalade," which was also revived in the early 2000s by Christina Aguilera, Mya, Pink and Lil' Kim.
Ms. Patti had already made Black History with Cindy Birdsong, Sara Dash and Nona Hendryx as the powerhouse group Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles (later Labelle). After the group disbanded, she forged through on her own as a pioneer in music, style and entrepreneurship. Sixty years and counting. Whether big stage or Tiny Desk, the standard-bearing icon continues to exude elegance and grace as a performer.

@@williemoore756 Let me make something clear. I love Patti, but I have to agree that her voice is pretty much gone. And it makes me sad. Even in her lower range she can't seem to stay on key. It breaks my heart to say this about my favorite diva, but it's true. She's almost 80 now and I guess all the belting has finally taken it's toll. But let me be clear she will always be one of my favorite performers even if she's not 100 percent. She doesn't have anything to prove. She has more than proven herself over the years. You only have to do your research and see for yourself. I guess it's true what they say all good things must come to an end. But if Patti could hit a note from her grave I hope I am lucky enough to be around to hear it. Because she epitomizes class.

Watched El Debarge (amazing!!) and went to their (NPR's) channel to find more. When I saw hers, I was breaking my knuckles to press click. She did not disappoint. I sing, and knew nearly all those songs almost note for note (all but the first one) so you should have seen a fan doing lead alongside Ms. Patti (you know she changes it up so I figured I'd sing the original arrangement while she did her thing).
Well, you should have seen yours truly jump back when she hit those notes.😳😱😍 Threw me off key, made my voice strain trying to keep up and MADE me shut up and watch the genius at work.😜 It was as if she was saying: "Step aside jit and let the OGs show you how it's done."😂 She showed me, alright. I met Ms Patti at Wintrust Arena in Chicago in 2022 I was working security on stage and was on my break and I was returning back to my post and she spoke to me.
I send her huge dozens of roses 🌹to her concert for years. She met me backstage, took pictures, and we spoke, and met her son Zuri. I have a friend that went to school with her sister that passed and she confirmed it all. You will NEVER meet anyone so real and down to earth. I LOVE ❤Miss Patricia Louise Holte aka "Patti LaBelle".

Her headvoice is so clean, free and versatile. She's pushing 80 and it's so impressive. Obviously her belting voice is greatly diminished, focusing on a lighter mix. However I still enjoy this from a woman who's been doing it over 60 years!
