Hey John, i've got this horn, a Yamaha Beginner-to-Intermediate Trumpet, that i am 99% sure has a defect on High E, 3rd ledger line. I have absolutely no slot for E only able to play it 3rd valve. Not open nor 1 and 2. I have also had a 45+ year player aswell as a lead jazz player try it out. Both said the E has an extremely pinched slot on my horn. I was going to see about having it adjusted, possibly the lead pipe. Do you have any advice for repairing/adjusting my horn? Anything is appreciated, thanks, Ryan.
Has this always been a problem or did it develop into a problem? The list of possibilities for this issue is not that long in my experience. Is there a leak someplace? The leak could be a small hole or crack. It could also be a leaking spit valve. Is the horn clean? It is possible that there is something stuck in the horn someplace. It does not have to be big to cause issues. Is there excess solder inside the horn at one of the joints? Is there a problem with the valve alignment? Is the receiver positioned wrong? I would have a good repair technician check the horn over for these issues and see what they find. If they find nothing then the horn is simply not correct and I would sell it and get a horn that plays properly. Having any work done on the horn that is not fixing an issue that could be a cause may not fix the problem. I would not spend a bunch of money chasing down this problem. See what the Technician says and go from there. Best, Jon
Great interview explaining the aspects that really matter when designing a trumpet. The coke bottle analogy was very easy to understand.
Lol understood :)
