(In case other people didnt know.) You can really help out your pet parrot with the pin feathers it can't reach, especially the back of their head and their face. If the pin feathers stay too long and become stuck, it can cause the poor birdie lots of discomfort and can even cause feather loss! If you have 2 or more parrots at home (and they get along 😅), then they will help each other out when it comes to releasing pin feathers. Also! If you want less keratin dust in your house, give your parrot a good misting in the shower it makes it way less dusty, and plus, most parrots LOVE a good wash 😂❤

Not to mention whenever they dry up and the feather is fully out, it can actually be kinda itchy to the parrot which is why they are always preening themselves. And sometimes there are parts they cannot reach which is why they help preen one another. And if you have a good relationship with your parrot, they actually will greatly appreciate you helping them reach the parts they can’t get as it is also a type of friendship building moment

Nope. I have a skin picking problem, and I have a parrot. I've kept parrots for years and I love getting the new feathers. I dont see why people would be upset. Ive even heard that picking iff a bords pin feathers is actually a good way to build a bond with them. They even do it for eachother in the wild.

Meanwhile, look at that parrot's body language. It's loving the preening, when the pin feathers are ready. Nice trust and bonding.

This helps me a lot! I was so scared when my rescue boy was riddled with these. I thought he was gonna need surgery or something. Nobody, even the people who gave me him, explained it.

Feathers come from scales, that's why they grow like that

I guess I never thought about the fact that birds don't just hatch with all their feathers already intact. They actually have to grow them, like hair. Wow!

My grandparents had a rescued parrot who plucked out all his feathers due to stress and neglect in the previous home.
Unfortunately they never grew back, but he was still a beautiful bird with the stuff remaining on his head. I miss him every time I visit them, he'd yell in the same voice my papa used to get my grandmas attention (she's been going deaf for a while now).
She does have awful asthma so I can't help wondering if those little left on his head was making it worse for her without even knowing.
Thank you for the information regardless, they don't rescue as much anymore but still have their smaller cages and take in birds very rarely.

Pin feathers are why it's so important to keep birds in pairs. Especially small birds, they're easy to see on large parrots but they'd be incredibly difficult to get on a small bird like a finch. Another finch would be able to preen it no problem though

I could never own a parrot for a number of reasons, but the cherry on top is that I would most definitely be tempted to touch the pin feathers too soon thanks to my purging compulsions (OCD). I would never want to subject anyone to my obsessive blackhead and sebaceous filament cleansing habit, much less an animal. Pin feathers have the potential to severely harm or kill your bird if broken before it is done growing

A lot of people who just get a bird only get one and dont realize that they really should come in pairs (most species anyways.) In the wild, birds have friends or partners to help preen the hard-to-reach spots, like on the back of the head. When you get a bird, YOU are their preening partner, so you gotta help them out and help them feel pretty. Its also really good bonding for you and your bird c:

I remember having mixed feelings everytime it was season of these pin feathers to come out, i would get happy bc breaking the crust off was addictive and fun and kind of like a bonding time between me and my baby, but it caused me to have such bad allergies (was so worth it though)
Rest in peace Ollie, my sweet angel ❤

Any person that has ever owned any kind of bird should be able to recognize those. They're perfectly normal, people need to learn more about the animals that they like before getting offended.
