IT IS!! I used to rescue exotic birds from abusive or neglectful situations and one of the ways I would really bond with them was preening. It was soothing for me and a gesture of love for them.
(In case other people didnt know.) You can really help out your pet parrot with the pin feathers it can't reach, especially the back of their head and their face. If the pin feathers stay too long and become stuck, it can cause the poor birdie lots of discomfort and can even cause feather loss! If you have 2 or more parrots at home (and they get along 😅), then they will help each other out when it comes to releasing pin feathers. Also! If you want less keratin dust in your house, give your parrot a good misting in the shower it makes it way less dusty, and plus, most parrots LOVE a good wash 😂❤
For that last line: All I can think of is my grand aunts old parrots who dived into a bown of water and slashed around for a solid 5 minutes before she called them out and they froze in place. lol

Some birds use it as a calming habit and then end up over preening in neglectful or abusive situations, which can make the bird stop producing feathers over time
this is actually a super important part of bonding with your bird. they do this to each other in the wild so it helps them associate you as a “flock mate”
Not to mention whenever they dry up and the feather is fully out, it can actually be kinda itchy to the parrot which is why they are always preening themselves. And sometimes there are parts they cannot reach which is why they help preen one another. And if you have a good relationship with your parrot, they actually will greatly appreciate you helping them reach the parts they can’t get as it is also a type of friendship building moment

Nope. I have a skin picking problem, and I have a parrot. I've kept parrots for years and I love getting the new feathers. The problem is your bird doesn't want or tolerate the amount of preening from you that will satisfy your need to stim. I constantly have bite wounds in various stages of healing all over my hands because it is so hard to stop when the bird says stop.
I second this! Of course, people shouldn't get a bird as a primary solution and everything. But if you already have one, this is absolutely helpful. My birds loved that I would preen them as soon as they asked, because they are a little dumdum and don't understand preening each other. And for me, it hit just the right spot and kept the skin picking down (in addition to my other tools obviously)

Chickens also have this! I love crumbling the keratin shells off my hens’ necks, they love it! It’s like getting a good scratch in a hard to reach place

It’s work, work, work, day in, day out, and the amount of attention (play, keeping their minds active, and directing their energy in a positive way) is no small feat!
My bird looooved me helping with his pin feathers when they were ready (the ones he couldn't reach), he'd try to groom me by nibbling my fingers gently as I helped him
Mum had a African grey back in the late 90s, a rescued bird , the powder was everywhere constantly!. She was sneaky, i had her for around 6 months, her cage was left open in my house when i was out all day, for months I'd get home and praise her for not damaging anything, and she'd always be sitting on her perch above the cage when i got home,then i found a single little poop half way up my stairs 😮 my imagination ran wild with what she must have been doing whilst i was out all that time 😂 she was a stroppy thing at times,and always put her beak resting against the metal cage,then clicked her beak making the whole metal cage vibrate,always when talking to someone, or watching/ playing favourite shows or playing games..she knew exactly what she was doing!, the young Rook i had as a rescue was far more intelligent though, and no where near as annoying 😅
It also worth mentioning that birds will peel those off of each other to help each other, so when we made them pets, it's now our responsibility to help the bird. It's not hurting them, it's not cruel, it needs to be peeled off! And that is one beautiful bird!!
I remember reading about pin feathers when I first got birds. That's why birds give each other times for preening. I just never saw it so clearly because I have tiny birds. I'm glad I got to see this and for you telling me about the blood. Now I know that if they preen themselves, that might be a worry I can calm myself from sooner.

My grandparents had a rescued parrot who plucked out all his feathers due to stress and neglect in the previous home. Unfortunately they never grew back, but he was still a beautiful bird with the stuff remaining on his head. I miss him every time I visit them, he'd yell in the same voice my papa used to get my grandmas attention (she's been going deaf for a while now). She does have awful asthma so I can't help wondering if those little left on his head was making it worse for her without even knowing. Thank you for the information regardless, they don't rescue as much anymore but still have their smaller cages and take in birds very rarely.
Pin feathers are why it's so important to keep birds in pairs. Especially small birds, they're easy to see on large parrots but they'd be incredibly difficult to get on a small bird like a finch. Another finch would be able to preen it no problem though
I could never own a parrot for a number of reasons, but the cherry on top is that I would most definitely be tempted to touch the pin feathers too soon thanks to my purging compulsions (OCD). I would never want to subject anyone to my obsessive blackhead and sebaceous filament cleansing habit, much less an animal. Pin feathers have the potential to severely harm or kill your bird if broken before it is done growing
A lot of people who just get a bird only get one and dont realize that they really should come in pairs (most species anyways.) In the wild, birds have friends or partners to help preen the hard-to-reach spots, like on the back of the head. When you get a bird, YOU are their preening partner, so you gotta help them out and help them feel pretty. Its also really good bonding for you and your bird c:

I remember having mixed feelings everytime it was season of these pin feathers to come out, i would get happy bc breaking the crust off was addictive and fun and kind of like a bonding time between me and my baby, but it caused me to have such bad allergies (was so worth it though) Rest in peace Ollie, my sweet angel ❤

I used to preen my bird of pin feathers all the time, he loved it and he would ask for more preening because I think pin feathers are itchy.
They are. I suppose that encourages them to preen.
It’s a great bonding activity too since it shows that they trust you.
They also need to socialize and its a great way to do so.
