Thanks, and greetings from England! At the side of the Minidisc Walkmen, the giant connector (with the hole in the middle and two metal contacts at the end on the MZ-R30) is for an AA battery caddy (adapter) that you can screw on to make it AA battery powered. The battery caddy for the R30 and R50 takes two AA batteries, and the caddy for the N707 takes one AA battery. You can buy those on eBay, but they can be expensive. You can buy replacement internal batteries for the R30 but I don't know how good they are. Again, eBay is the place to look and you want a "LIP-12(H)" compatible one. You can buy an AC adpater too. It must be centre positive. You can buy the multi-voltage ones with a selection of tips and then use them on many Minidisc players and recorders. The R30 requires a lot of power though, so you need a charger that is centre positive, with 3V output, and rated for 2250mA or higher (27VA or higher). I have a Pifco ELA1136 but they don't make those anymore. For the recorders you have, Line In is a good way to record onto minidisc. Your PCs and Macs should have Line Out, and the Minidisc recorders have Line In, so you need a 3.5mm to 3.5mm audio lead to connect the two. I have a video tht might help you, Six Ways to get Music onto a Minidisc: th-cam.com/video/5JHFIXiOnw8/w-d-xo.html I hope that answers your questions, and thanks for watching!
Great video! I have a Lenova Notebook Windows 10 with MP3 Tracks I’ve recorded from CD is it possible to transfer these files to a Minidisc player/recorder? Thanks.
If you've got a MZ-R30 then your best option is to buy a USB to Optical-out adapter. Next best is USB to Line-Out adapter. Both of which will give good quality recordings on the R30. Failing that, headhone out of laptop to Mic In on the R30, but it's sub-optimal. If you have a NetMD recorder, then the Web Minidisc Pro site will be best. I recommend you watch this video first th-cam.com/video/5JHFIXiOnw8/w-d-xo.html
PS. Directly transferring MP3 to MD (in MP3 format) is only possible on a couple of (expensive) recorders. Data has to be transcoded by the software and/or player into ATRAC format for most players.
From a MD to a computer is difficult because most MD players don't have Optical Out. Very few have line out either, but for those that do you can go line-in to a PC. Probably the best way is via USB to Web Minidisc Pro.
@@CBitsTech Thank you. There's no USB port on the MZ-R30 so I'm trying to figure out if I can run a line out cable into some kind of converter or adapter gizmo. Tech isn't my thing so struggling a lot with this.
If you have a desktop PC it might have a Line In socket. If not, or you have a laptop, you can buy USB audio adapters with Line In. Connect that to your Minidisc, usually with a 3.5mm plug on both ends of a cable. The most technical part is downloading and using Audacity which is a free audio software which can capture the audio as you play it from the R30. You then save it in the most convenient format. There are tutorials on TH-cam, but not by me.
I tried to record TH-cam Music via optical from my PlayStation to Sony mini disc but I get a c14 cannot record error. Is that the copy protection and is there any way around it. It was main streem big rock band live concert. Is it scms copy protection. I can copy from CD to mini disc fine.
I don't know. I don't have a PlayStation, sorry. It could be copy protection, I suppose. It could be that the PlayStation is sending data at an incompatible frequency or format for the MD recorder.
I (Rebought) myself one after 17 years from an old man for less at 55 Euro with the original adapter. 1 st I've use not good at all taking it to clubs and falling from the scooter etc. The second one is looking like this one. Even if it is very solid for a midi disc player and the sound still great I would recommend a player like the Tascam 350D with a keyboard option archiving the songs a little faster for recording.
Hello...I've recently acquired the MZ-G750 which are my first MD Walkman. I've tried to record tracks using analog method i.e 3.5mm miniplug-to-miniplug cable from my laptop which has combo audio jack on it. The MD Walkman recognizes it as a Line-In input and proceeds to record but when i tried to play back the MD, the player recognizes the disc as blank. I wondered if you could give me an advice on solving it...Thanks.
Hello! Could be a couple of things going wrong. When I use a mobile phone headset to listen to my players I don't get good sound because the combo plug (including mic) isn't compatible with the old style stereo socket. I don't think that's your problem though. I think your recorder might be faulty. First, check that after recording it does a TOC Edit. If it tries to write this TOC (Table Of Contents) to the disc then it thinks it has recorded to the disc. If the disc then shows as blank then either the laser is dirty or failing, or the record head is not working. How it works is the laser that reads the disc in playback heats up the disk during recording to a point where the data is written magnetically from the top of the disc. If the laser can't heat the disc, or the magnetic head can't write it, then the disc will still be blank. I suggest trying to get a disc that already has some tracks on it, then delete or rename a track. If that doesn't work it points to a bad laser, magnetic head, or ribbon cable. Sorry for the long reply. I am not an expert, remember.
@@CBitsTech Thanks for your kind advice. Luckily, i managed to get some used recordable MDs that had tracks already in it and waiting for it to arrive. Once it arrives, i will do the test as you suggested. Thanks!
Great, good luck! Let us know how it goes please. By the way, you could try cleaning the heads with a cotton bud and 99% Isopropyl Alcohol as a last resort, but they're fragile and easy to knock out of alignment I've heard.
If you use a regular stereo input you only record analog, optic cable and you get digital recording, it even says that in the display when you plug in a optical cable.
I have this exact MD Walkman, but I am having a charging problem with it, once removed from the main charger it will turn it self of completely, is there any way I can fix this
Hi , Thanks for posting ,, great info . Questions : 1 - Are the songs recorded TO the MiniDisc in a mp3 format ? 2 - If not ,,, what type of format ? 3 - Can you change the formats of BOTH the output ( TH-cam music ) , and input ( recorded music to MiniDisc ) ? 4 - I'm trying to figure out if I could roughly get ,,, say ,,,,, 50 mp3 songs ,,,, onto a MiniDisc ,,,,,,,,, or will the MiniDisc player NOT play mp3 files ? ( THANKS TO ANY and ALL FOR ANY ANSWERS !!! )
Kaa Zee MiniDisc primarily uses a proprietary compression format called ATRAC encoding. Earlier MD recorders can take in any analogue or digital signal (depending on model) and convert it to ATRAC. Later models known as MDLP could use a computer program known as Sonic Stage to convert any type audio file to convert to ATRAC for the MD player to read. Lastly, the latest generation of MD players known as HiMD could record using ATRAC, MP3, or PCM. Like MP3’s, the MD will hold 50 or more tracks with degraded sound quality. For more information, go to minidisc.org
Sorry, for this Minidisc player I use the original battery. It still works well enough. I couldn't find a way to adapt a common battery. I think there might be replacements out there, but can't vouch for how good they are or the cost, sorry.
Someone else asked the same question, so I did a little investigation. Search Amazon and Ebay for 'LIP-12'. The Sony ones will be old, but there are compatibles still produced by the looks of it.
Hello I have a couple of MZ-E60s which are my favourite players but I'm thinking of getting a sharp MT290H which is a recorder as well, and wondered if you could give me an opinion on them as have never owned a recorder before. thanks Shaun.
Hi Shaun. I love the M-E60, I own one too. Basic, but robust, and I like the design. It only plays discs recorded in SP mode though (I think), so if you're getting a recorder make sure you record in SP if you want to play it on the MZ-E60s. I only ever had one Sharp and it was bought faulty and I never got it to work. I don't know the MT290H so can't have an opinion. However, on eBay I see a lot of Sharp players faulty with the same error (can't remember the error). I think the lasers burn out. All I can suggest is, if you buy a Sharp, make sure it's tested by the seller and working. Good luck.
@@CBitsTech Thanks for the advice and yes I might pass on that one and get another model, the good thing about ebay is that they always have quite a few items for sale and the prices on some of them are not to bad, and yes the E60 is a great little player and the sound is brilliant on it, I have a habit of purchasing more than I need just in case ebay runs out :) but you probably know what I mean when you find a favourite player, thanks for the reply and thanks for the md videos as there are not to many on youtube at the moment.
@@shaunboden6951 Thanks for that. I have a couple of MZ-N707 recorder players. They're a good price usually. They're good recorders, pretty small to carry as players, and work with SonicStage if you can get it installed.
yes! thanks for share your video :D I have this one. it reads discs, displays very well, no bad sounds of mechanism, no hits, no damages. the converter DC works properly. No sound through line out/headphones. don't you know why? no sound with headphones or line out plug.
Thanks 🙂 Did it ever work for you? Are you sure the disc is recorded on SP? These players can't play LP2 or LP4 discs. Do you get a bar on the left side that bounces up and down as the music plays? If it's an LP2 or LP4 disc you won't get this bar. If it's a SP disc and it's reading the sound properly then this bar will move up and down. If that is the case, but there's no sound from headphones or line out, I suspect that it's a problem with the headphones and line out sockets or the circuit board near them. Have you tried recording and playing back your recording?
@@CBitsTech Thank you for reply! that was the issue: SP mode. I have an old Aiwa Net MD, I recorded tracks and finally after attempts, I recorded ATRAC format. it Works very very good! I really don't remember where I bought it, for sure I found it in a local street market (flea market) by $12 USD. ! :D thank you again. (in my channel I posted the Short)
@@CBitsTech I Want to add a comment. I don't know if other devices Sony with Mega Bass are as high quality DAC as this one. I will test if my Walkman arrives as I expect it :D I mean, this MZ-R30 has a very good Mega Bass function, enhances the frequency / the bass very harmonic without loud. Other "bass punchers" increase the loud or the punch, (yes I like it ) but this Sony Mega Bass harmonicly increases the bass with fine and very good process of frequency, with better sound and more harmonics in comparison to equalizers or other devices. Thank you again!
@@CBitsTech let me recap: in *optical mode* (5:06) it won't record till audio is detected, just it will start in Pause - starts the song and MD receives the signal (so starts the recording 5:55) then new track starts and it is recorded as "song No. 2" it pauses automaticly after three seconds without signal (or silence, while other track starts if it is playlist) so, I imagine a playlist as usual will be recorded automaticly with numbers of track and its "pause", I can leave it recording while playlist sends the songs to MD. the "ugly" is the time of recording, real time as recording cassette tape. shelterin again, thank you!
Sorry for the delay in replying. The Optical cable is the one you see sticking out of the left of the player in the video thumbnail. It's a mini-Optical plug, I think that's what they're called. It's a round plug. The other end of that cable has a square plug that goes into the back of the sending audio device (music centre or PC, etc).
Your PC will need to have a sound card with an optical output. This isn't usually standard, especially on the lower end machines. You can add a sound card with optical in and out for anything from £25 upwards.
Sorry for the delay in replying. I bought my cables from Amazon.co.uk, but you can also get them from eBay. Search for TosLink. I think you need TosLink to Mini Toslink, the one with a square end and a round plug.
It's a Sony LIP-12(H) Rechargeable Lithium Ion battery. 3.6V, 1350mAh. Sony don't make them anymore. Sony ones on Ebay will be old and probably not very good. There are compatibles on Amazon (UK) and eBay but I have never used them. Search for 'LIP-12'.
My poor MZ-R30 is a little worse for wear as its been up in the attic for a few years. I remember the last time I used it the optical input was working perfectly, this time round no dice. Firstly the synchro rec switch no longer does anything, it's not even registering anything through the optical input, I even tried it on an old hifi that works perfectly with it, but nothing. I thought I was doing something wrong, that'd i'd forgotten something obvious, but no. Looks like I'll have to crack her open at the weekend and see what's wrong, surely it would record from optical even if the synchro recording switch isn't even on? Has anyone come across something similar?
Thanks for the comment and question. I attempted to answer in my catchup video th-cam.com/video/loYd27dOwdA/w-d-xo.html but I've since thought of something else. Looking at my R30 (but not taking it apart), I think the syncro-record is the only record button. It's a sliding switch, and my guess is that it has a metal contact that slides onto another metal contact on the ciruit-board. You can access the back of the switch from just inside the disc door. If you have any isopropal alchohol (or contact cleaner), you might try dropping a small amount down the back of the slider and moving it back and forth several times to clean up the contact. Leave it a long time for the liquid to evaporate, then try it. Bear in mind, I'm no expert in this stuff, and I'm just guessing, so can't be held resposible. By the way, if you do open it, remember there are a couple of screws just inside the battery cover, but I don't know if you need to remove those too. Good luck!

You can use a regular stereo input that you use for an iPad or cell phone.I have one and It works. No optical chord needed.
Thanks. I know. Optical is better quality though, in my opinion.
@@CBitsTech I could not get my optical to fit this one. Do you know why?
@@rumplesteel9884 I'm sure it's a standard toslink cable. Round, like a standard headphones one, but with a hole in the end for the light to come out.
If you use a regular stereo input you only record analog, optic cable and you get digital recording, it even says that in the display when you plug in a optical cable.
I have this exact MD Walkman, but I am having a charging problem with it, once removed from the main charger it will turn it self of completely, is there any way I can fix this
It could be that your battery has failed. Do you have a multimeter to test the battery voltage?
Hi ,
Thanks for posting ,, great info .
Questions :
1 - Are the songs recorded TO
the MiniDisc in a mp3 format ?
2 - If not ,,, what type of format ?
3 - Can you change the formats of
BOTH the output ( TH-cam music ) ,
and input ( recorded music to MiniDisc ) ?
Jason gave a great reply. I also attempted to answer your question in my most recent video th-cam.com/video/loYd27dOwdA/w-d-xo.html. Thanks.

please can you tell me where do you get your rechargable batteries from, or an adapter to use standard shaped batteries
Sony has official parts to adapt AA battery with minidisc players. and there are also new generic NiMh gumstick batteries on sale.
@@veritac The MZ-R30 doesn't use gumstick batteries. The LIP-12 is a much chunkier beast but the compatibles are still available for about £15.
They're good recorders, pretty small to carry as players, and work with SonicStage if you can get it installed.
yes! thanks for share your video :D I have this one.
it reads discs, displays very well, no bad sounds of mechanism,
no hits, no damages. the converter DC works properly. No sound through line out/headphones. don't you know why? no sound with headphones or line out plug.
Thanks 🙂
Did it ever work for you?
@@georgemartinezza Excellent, I'm glad to hear it. It was a bargain!
@@CBitsTech I Want to add a comment.
I don't know if other devices Sony with Mega Bass are as high quality DAC as this one. I will test if my Walkman arrives as I expect it :D
I mean, this MZ-R30 has a very good Mega Bass function, enhances the frequency / the bass very harmonic without loud. Other "bass punchers" increase the loud or the punch, (yes I like it ) but this Sony Mega Bass harmonicly increases the bass with fine and very good process of frequency, with better sound and more harmonics in comparison to equalizers or other devices. Thank you again!
@@CBitsTech let me recap:
in *optical mode* (5:06) it won't record till audio is detected, just it will start in Pause -
starts the song and MD receives the signal (so starts the recording 5:55) then new track starts and it is recorded as "song No. 2"
it pauses automaticly after three seconds without signal (or silence, while other track starts if it is playlist)
so, I imagine a playlist as usual will be recorded automaticly with numbers of track and its "pause", I can leave it recording while playlist sends the songs to MD.
the "ugly" is the time of recording, real time as recording cassette tape. shelterin again, thank you!
Where You conect The optical cable in PC?
Sorry for the delay in replying. The Optical cable is the one you see sticking out of the left of the player in the video thumbnail. It's a mini-Optical plug, I think that's what they're called. It's a round plug. The other end of that cable has a square plug that goes into the back of the sending audio device (music centre or PC, etc).
Your PC will need to have a sound card with an optical output. This isn't usually standard, especially on the lower end machines. You can add a sound card with optical in and out for anything from £25 upwards.
where can you get the optical cable from?
Sorry for the delay in replying. I bought my cables from Amazon.co.uk, but you can also get them from eBay. Search for TosLink. I think you need TosLink to Mini Toslink, the one with a square end and a round plug.
I have the same md player but it has no battery, can you tell me what battery it takes please
@@CBitsTech thank you for your reply.
Amazon has compatible third party replacements, cost around $17 US. They work just fine in my MZ-R30.
Good luck!
