@@richardweddle3408 I actually left this subjective on purpose because underwater white balance is a matter of personal preference. There is no right and wrong. We see that the Action 5 did a great job with exposure and image quality, and the underwater color correction did a great job bringing out the blues and other colors, plus nice contrast - certainly ready to share on social without needing to fuss too much with color temperature adjustments. Anyways, it's all about what YOU think!
If you have more time, a video comparing edited log video, and commenting about dynamic range, would be welcome. The Action 5 pro claims 13.5 stops of dynamic range, but there are no comparable claims for their earlier cameras, or for the GoPro cameras. Which cameras are best for being able to recover shadow or highlight detail, if you're willing to do color grading?
Great useful video. After reviewing this and other videos, I purchased the Action 5 because I will primarily be using it as a dive camera. To me the Action 5 is much more color accurate. For my own comparison, I used a Go Pro 10 on a recent dive trip. I was happy that the Go Pro had a center tripod screw for mounting to my dive light which helps but was not otherwise impressed. The Go Pro sucked battery but the battery life on the Action 5 falls short of 4 hours during active shooting. My main complaint is that the menu system on the Action 5 is very fiddly. There is still much to learn. One thing that concerned me was the Action 5 magnetic mount. However it has a locking clip and I doubt that the camera will separate from the mount under normal usage. I'm happy with my decision to go with the Action 5.
@@BrentDurand just one off topic question, please. my hero 7 black has the GPS (speed elevation) option, and it has stopped working. I was told that the memory card has been corrupted and to buy another memory card. well that did not fix the issue. How can I get the gps feature to work again? Thanks.
Great video man!!! Dji Action 5 is clearly better. Let me ask you something, to your eye, since you're the one that was there, which camera looks closer than real life color?
It really depends on the clip. Everything underwater was muted green and dark and not very appealing if you were to leave the footage like that. It's why divers carry a flashlight to see the colors in dark conditions, why photographers and video shooters often use strobes and video lights, etc.
Thanks for the comparison. I'm leaning toward the Action 5. I found the Lingcod clip interesting. The GoPro looks clearer (I realize it renders brighter). The Action 5 appears to have a yellowish cast on the Lingcod. I obviously don't know what the actual conditions & Lingcod color was.
You're welcome. Both cameras are making color adjustments and pick up different 'criteria' that shift the color temperature, which is why they're all slightly different scene to scene. The background water, sunlight, and colors in the foreground really drive the color that the camera is producing. That said, if there's one clip that doesn't look the way you want it to, like the lingcod clip with the Action 5 Pro, you could do a quick color temp adjustment using the DJI Mimo app. Easy.
Thanks for this. I was just on the fence with this as I video under fesh water 80% of the time. Does the camera actually record the depth? My cameras mount on hanger systems so I can't see the screen. It would be nice to have an archive of the depth.
I haven't actually tried the pressure sensor, but it's CE certified, meaning it is high quality. You do need to use the camera without the dive housing, so max depth is limited.
Dear Brent, thanks a lot for this great video. What underwater settings ans also which colour profile would you recommend for most underwater situation while diving in tropical waters like maldives? Thanks a lot!
You're welcome. It really depends on what you're shooting and how much editing + color grading you plan to do, but generally I recommend 4K at 60fps. This is a nice balance of low light performance with the ability to slow the footage down 50% (slo-mo).
@ thanks a lot Brent! And which coulour profile would you recommend under water if i dont want to do any editing? Normal profile or the new "HLG HDR profile"? There's a difference in white balance and colors and I like the Action 5's look underwater, but is the GoPro more true to life? This is not a rhetorical question, I'm genuinely curious even though I'd likely pick the Action 5 regardless.
I think it's personal preference. Some people want the color exactly as they see it underwater (blue or green), while some prefer a color temperature anchored in true white. We see the latter more on social media, especially with the folks shooting in perfect sunny skies and crystal clear water over the last 5 or so years. For me in the kelp forests where conditions are dramatically different day to day and even hour to hour, sometimes I prefer the more "accurate" green tint of the water that dive, and sometimes I like to pull out the blues to give the scene more color, contrast, and pop (keeping all footage across an edit/video consistent of course). So it really just depends on your personal preference... and apparently mood in my case!
I did not since I made a point of diving with the waterproof case. I will try it though. The pressure sensor is EN13319-compliant, one of the European standards all dive computers must meet, so we know it is high-quality and reliable.
If not editing, I Would shoot 4K60 and turn on PRO mode to access 10-bit recording. You can edit the color grading with these settings via the DJI Mimo app. If color grading you could do this or experiment with LOG flat color profile.
