I believe Patrick McKeown studied the Buteyko method; however, Buteyko is focused mainly on mental health, so he created the Oxygen Advantage method to promote the performance benefits.

Such an excellent summary! There's a lack of good summaries and guidance in practice in the Buteyko world. Read the book they say, but that takes time! people want quick fixes. But of course just breathing from the diaphragm and through the nose is a perfect start for most. But to achieve a higher control pause, (CP) you have to make quite a few changes, daily practice of course, but also dietary corrections guided by CP testing after a meal, sleeping inclined, and loads of different stuff! And also: just slowing your breath, or holding it for a while can calm you down!
These ideas you are discussing belong to Dr. Constantin Butsyeko, a Russian Physiologist and MD from whom McKeon took lessonsl from. Dr. Buteyko, now deceased, one of the geniuses that walked the planet.
I kept having running nose while I workout for hours for 2months until its soo easy to breath in the nose making me less tired more effiecient and less calm. thank you
Question: Does the book address how to breath through your nose if you have chronic nasal congestion? Without Claritin D and Breathe Rite strips, I can barely pull air through my nasal passages because I have such bad nasal congestion due to allergies. I'm basically allergic to everything in the air and years of allergy shots did nothing. Will the methods in this book potentially eliminate nasal congestion so I can breathe through my nose? Or is the Oxygen Advantage only for folks who can already breathe through the nose but just don't?
Listened to the audio book semi-focused, but if I do remember correctly the nasal problems is because of not using your nose to breath which causes it do have negative reactions.(He does go through a bunch of problems that is caused by mounth breathing and yours sounds like one of them.) So start doing it and keep going until it gets easier. I've been doing nose breathing for a few months now and my nose has gotten smaller and less red(Less inflammation) and its easier for me to breath through the nose now.
I don't have this particular book, but I know that one of the things the Buteyko method is known for is getting people with stuffy noses to be able to breathe freely through their nose, so I would bet the book goes over this. As do, I'm sure, plenty of Buteyko/McKeown YT vids.
Hello! I am 5 years late, but this may help answering your question, I have chronic nasal congestion, just like you, I am allergic to everything, dusts, cold air, pollen, the list goes on, tried every OCT & supplement on Amazon, nothing helps long term. 2 weeks of practicing the breathing method by The Oxygen Advantage, I can breathe through my nose all day during the day, and that’s huge for me!! The book has exercises to unclog your nose, and if your nose is clogged again minutes after the exercise, you should still insist in breathing through your nose, trust your body, you won’t die, instead your brain is going to get the signal that you are short of oxygen and then open up your airway for you, this book is life changing, if anyone’s reading this, I hope it helps you like it did for me. I am not 100% recovered from chronic congestion yet, i still feel the pressure when sleeping, but my life quality is at least 70% better!!

Hold until moderate discomfort, there shouldn't be a big recovery inhale. Take an average over a few days and that is your morning control pause. Under 10 seconds is bad. The bigger the number the better with a goal being 40 seconds. Thanks for this info which corroborates my personal experience. Hope it helps others. I am 68 years old and recently started having an increase in blood pressure. Found out about the 847 method which quickly reduces BP but doesn't last long. Learned a lot about about my upper chest breathing and anxiety and quickly changed to diaphragmatic. Things improved, but didn't last. Would take BP frequently as I experimented and couldn't understand why my diastolic (the out breath associated with rest and renew) would frequently be very high when the systolic (fight or flight) might be normal. Realized that I'll have to focus on this for a while to let neural pathways in the brain develop, but was tired of trying so hard. Reduced my breathing to much shorter easy even breaths. Immediately, my BP became amazing and lasts longer and doesn't go as high. BP's now range from 128/84 - 105/68. Previously, when stupid thinking stopped and attention turned to the breath, it always felt like I hadn't been breathing a all. After 2.5 months of this work, my mind recently came out of thoughtless thoughts and my breathing was in perfect simple even breaths. I wanted to cry with joy. @@HeroicBrian I did not test out the 3M personally since I only saw your video today but reading about the 3M "highly breathable" is listed as an attribute (which I assume has a different context than what we are referring to). I have another sports type tape that is certainly breathable. I suppose I could press my lips together and into my mouth before taping but I'm not sure I'd be comfortable. What I'm getting at is - will my sleeping body attempt to breathe through the tape if possible? Or am I overthinking this? Anyway, thanks for a quick reply and a great video! :-)
I tired Wim Hof. He speaks about how hypoventilation or rapid deep breathing saturates they body with oxygen creating alkaline chemical state. But this video is saying that’s wrong because hemoglobins are the only way to release oxygen, yet when I can hold my breath after the Wim Hof breathing technique for over 3 minutes with a full exhale with no air in my lungs.
in a carboxl driven respiratory system this is true. Smoke for fouty years or so. otherwise depleted oxygen triggers autonomic system. Test by holding you breath, your brain will over ride and intake oxygen.
Nice job Brian. Not sure if this applies to everyone but when you maybe have one nostril out of action due to some bug or the other try limiting your breathing to the point where you think you really have to breathe and the blockage will clear after a few breathing cycles.

I noticed a bunch of people asked about the Wim Hof Method vs. the Buteyko (or O2 Advantage) Method. You might want to check out th-cam.com/video/qvhXUMRYUzY/w-d-xo.html. The presenter is an instructor in both breathing methods.
I am sorry to comment this but this not a new technique of Patrick, it is cold stealing from his teacher Dr Buyteko. All the terminology used are the basic fundamentals of the Buteyko method, with new invented names. Basic information is missing that is why it will be difficult reach 40 seconds Control Pause or the new fancy name BOLD ( body oxygen level).
@@TheSweetalchemist oh in what sense? Everything he writes is exactly Buteyko, adding the supposed high altitude. All the book is based on BOLD, actually the CP, the Corbon dioxide tolerance. But please, share
Jake Daniel so i said you haven't read it. My comment is for Patrick McKeown and the book, who stole the method and renamed it "my oxygen advantage method". Secondly, if you knew, the book lacks fundamental information, starting with the fact that even if you reach 40 seconds you will not be an athlete since according to the Buteyko method (the teacher of Patrcik), the target is 60. Many others things as well but you are interested for the marketing
we used to call this shallow breathing. I feel like over breathing is the wrong language. it's more like stress breathing or attempt to catch up breathing. ive seen breathwork from russian systema that violates these rules completely and it works exceptionally well. this is some good informaton but were still a long way from fully understanding all that breath can do.
"Over-breathing" is a terrible name without the context of what depth of breathing. It sounds like you want to train yourself on living on less oxygen, when it's really a gas you want more of in your body. Flushing your body with oxygen is one of the greatest health benefits of exercising, not the muscle growth as commonly perceived
The only other things I know that work for snoring is mewing (this is keeping your tongur on the palate including the rear third) and keto diet or at least fasting (because this regeneates tissues) or at least a low carb type diet with fasting. Oxygen advantage also has the method for clearing your nose and it teaches you to hold breath longer: 2 normal inhale exhale and hold the exhale until modereate need, aftet inahing breathe normally for 1 minute (and do 5 reps) good breath hold to achieve is 20-40s.
you regenerate tissues with balanced proteins in meals daily organs get regenerated daily but through night they borrow materials from muscles muscles are important also for brain mass and health 😉 crazy but true
:look up Mind Muscle podcasts 216 ..Patrick Mckeown Breathing Fad Exposed..It's a great interview,,and he explains this regarding CO2..Basically you can have 98% Oxygen in your blood...but that isn't an indicator of oxygen in your cells ..You need CO2 release the Oxygen...In the end you are retraining your brain and the signals it sends..
Can you tell me where I can find the scientific proof you claim supports this method. Has it been peer reviewed? Which scientific journal has published the proof?
If I just breath with my nose during my boxing workouts, it just feels like I’m suffocating and need more oxygen, sure this is ok just breathing but why about athletes?
I have a question for you, Brother: Would an increase of CO2 affect hemoglobins affinity to oxygen in its way up? meaning wouldn't a resistance to CO2 result in lower ability to absorb O2 in the first place as well? also what would this do to the blood ph, wouldn't an increased resistance to CO2 result in permanent lower ph meaning a more acidic blood ph? would these two be a problem?
You are correct in regards to our blood pH will become more acidic, but our body is very smart and it will convert that CO2 into bicarbonate with the help of an enzyme called carbonic anhydrase. One of the ways our body gets rid of CO2 is by converting it into bicarbonate so it can be transported through our blood into the cappilaries of our lungs. In our lungs is where that process reverses it self and bicarbonate turns back into CO2 by the chemical process and then we breath it out. This speaker is not completely correct in regards to oxygen and CO2 transport in and out of the body. Look into oxyhemoglobin transport curve and it will show you how and what is responsible for the affinity of the oxygen and hemoglobin.
Lol you don’t need that much tape. You only need a tiny piece vertically over the middle line of your lips. It works and it won’t freak you out and have you think you’re gonna suffocate.
Sounds like simple yogic breathing, 6in, 8 out, or alternate nostril breathing, teach you the same things. Not saying this video is bad, not at all, I even want to read the book.
Lots of different breathing tools/types you can use! Part of the game is about finding what your idiosyncratic style is + rocking it! 🙌 -Zak | Team Optimize Optimize is now free! Sign up/tell your friends! www.optimize.me
just do it continually through the day..You don;t need to put tape completely over your mouth. at night.a little hitler moustache of tape will do or a small cross. The main thing is to get in the habit of breathing through your nose, and when you are comfy experiment with breathing in consciously using your diaphragm, and take a little longer breathing out.Baby steps...but it does require effort,
Brian i suspect u cant answer this scince it appears to do directly against your point of view. Why after hard controlled belly diaphragm breathing for 45 mins. Similar to Wim Hof Method. Why can i do 4 more pushups than my normal max of 23? Also if i am deprived of O2 why do i feel so good? Something funny goin on here. Topspinwilly in Vancouver. Oh by the way this breathing couldnt be done through the nose.

I'm calling bullshit on all of this. None of it makes sense and everytime he tries to explain why something is, he gives some random vague and implausible reason and then moves on. It's not like food where our diets have obviously changed. It's breathing. We have been doing it the same way since the beginning of time. I do not think any of what you said is accurate.
I discounted it when I first heard of this, but after reading a couple books on it(Breathe, and the Oxygen Advantage book) I don't think its JUST breathing, otherwise respiratory actions like hyperventilating would be trivial.
Maybe look at deep sea divers and the techniques they practice to hold their breathes for over 8 minutes. Wim Hof has also been puzzling scientists with the stuff he can claim and actually do.
U talk about breath, but u are always breathing through ur mouth and out of breath just by talking, maybe u should practise a bit more before teaching others 😆
everything is right, but Dr. Buteyko, a russian Scientist, who told this things 50 years ago, should be mentioned.

But the 3M is highly breathable so you can still breathe right through the tape!? Does it still work?
Hi Anders! I use the 3M tape and it cannot be breathed through. I tape my mouth in a way that promotes my lips sealing and thus I am only able to breathe through my nose. Have you tried it?
Great question!

Explains why I get dizzy faster when I get to much oxygen

Nice job Brian. Not sure if this applies to everyone but when you maybe have one nostril out of action due to some bug or the other try limiting your breathing to the point where you think you really have to breathe and the blockage will clear after a few breathing cycles.

No way I would be able to sleep with tape over my mouth lol probably because I have a weak diaphragm.

Try the 4, 7, 8 breathing , Dr Mccoola
Could you please explain the 4 78 breathing agai
@@sandrasmelcer6144 Go to Dr mercolla You tube . Type in 4 7 8
I am sorry to comment this but this not a new technique of Patrick, it is cold stealing from his teacher Dr Buyteko. All the terminology used are the basic fundamentals of the Buteyko method, with new invented names. Basic information is missing that is why it will be difficult reach 40 seconds Control Pause or the new fancy name BOLD ( body oxygen level).
@Jake Danielof course he does he even invited a new name: oxygen advance method! As well as high altitude techniques
He didn't reinvent it. He perfected it.
@@TheSweetalchemist oh in what sense? Everything he writes is exactly Buteyko, adding the supposed high altitude. All the book is based on BOLD, actually the CP, the Corbon dioxide tolerance. But please, share
@Jake Daniel I am sure you haven't red the book. Read first and then comment.

Oxygen advantage also has the method for clearing your nose and it teaches you to hold breath longer: 2 normal inhale exhale and hold the exhale until modereate need, aftet inahing breathe normally for 1 minute (and do 5 reps) good breath hold to achieve is 20-40s.

when we retain the air, we create more CO2 and we alkalize our body?
:look up Mind Muscle podcasts 216 ..Patrick Mckeown Breathing Fad Exposed..It's a great interview,,and he explains this regarding CO2..Basically you can have 98% Oxygen in your blood...but that isn't an indicator of oxygen in your cells ..You need CO2 release the Oxygen...In the end you are retraining your brain and the signals it sends..
Can you tell me where I can find the scientific proof you claim supports this method. Has it been peer reviewed? Which scientific journal has published the proof?

hey brian isint it a small breath through the nose, about a inch of air
If I just breath with my nose during my boxing workouts, it just feels like I’m suffocating and need more oxygen, sure this is ok just breathing but why about athletes?
Patrick mentions that if you are an athlete, you should be breathing through your nose 50% of the the time during exercise.
I have had much better results with the Wim Hof Method.
Right on!! So many paths to awesome.

you do realize that these things are non-exclusive?

Breathe
Every time I get sick and have to breathe through my mouth I get anxiety ugh
just do it continually through the day..You don;t need to put tape completely over your mouth. at night.a little hitler moustache of tape will do or a small cross. The main thing is to get in the habit of breathing through your nose, and when you are comfy experiment with breathing in consciously using your diaphragm, and take a little longer breathing out.Baby steps...but it does require effort,

By nose gets irritated when I breathe through it
Chris Cash maybe it's not use to it. Maybe it will become accustomed to with time
Not sure. I have small nostrils. I was actually trying to breath through them during my run today and I couldn't get enough air in
I also have narrow nostrils & in fact a deviated septum& snore as u say b/c I breathe shallowly. I have had my neurologist who noticed all this suggest surgery to open up my nostrils & correct deviated septum. I declined but am rethinking that decision b/ c my mouth is very dry. Also I don't get enough exercise. Think I will try the 3 M tape over bridge of nose to help keep my nostrils from collapsing when I sleep on either side.
My mouth is dry as well. Is this supposed to help?

I can't believe people need to be taught to breath through their noses. People disappoint me.
