  • Aluminess manufactures premium winch bumpers, tire racks, roof racks and off road accessories for trucks, vans, and SUV's. Within the van life / overland community Aluminess has a solid reputation for manufacturing quality aluminum products that last and server the purpose. In June of 2018, I sat down with Aluminess founder Dave Hoskins to talk about camper vans, van life, the history of the company, and van conversion tours. Here is what I learned.

We flew to Europe 5 days after our wedding (we are Americans) and bought a campervan in England for our honeymoon. We've just returned after 2.5 years of traveling 40,000 miles across Europe, the UK and Africa and now we're trying to figure out our next moves/home/vessle. We also traveled across the US and Can for a year before we got married and decided to do it abroad. It's a fascinating thing, VanLife, the why's, the how's, the how longs... everyone's answers and reasons are different :) Absolutely LOVE the roof top deck + ladder.

I just ordered my bumpers from Aluminess, friendly folks on the phone, hard to find stuff from my NV3500. I love the history and morals of the owner/creator.

It’s the realization that more is not better.
    Less is better.
That’s what this ride is about.
Who needs a 50 foot diesel pusher to drive around ?
    Not me lol
That’s a request for making friends at dealers and spending time filling the tanks with fuel.
I rather have a small, nimble van to go anywhere. I wanna spend my time outside the van. Only be in it when I’m sleeping or driving.
A giant motor home is for those who wanna live inside and never go out.

I have a full compliment of Aluminess products on my 4x4 Roadtrek. Good stuff, expensive. My mountain bikes are attached to the top of the cargo box. They don’t endorse doing that but it works great. Also, they put a 200 lb. limit on the front receiver hitch. It is not built into the bumper. It is bolted on underneath. I have put my Honda Grom on a motorcycle carrier on the front and it has worked great. I did have heavy duty stabilizing straps attached to the bumper bars to lessen the stress on the receiver hitch. I imagine that the extra weight from the motorcycle on the front is not necessarily good for the front end components but everything seems ok so far.

Nice ! I just retired at 66 , I own a 15 acre homestead with a nice 4 br 2 bath cabin built in 2009 near Springfield,Mo. was planning on living the farm life but now at 66 I’m having a hard time feeding the animals ,planting the garden etc . I’m a Sagittarius extrucker and miss the traveling part . As soon as I can get rid of this place and all my stuff I’m going to get me one of these vans to live in . Why not ? I’ve lived in a truck and truck stops for 43 years , this time I won’t have a schedule and can travel and stay how ever I want to . I also have a new utility trailer from interstate Hwy 1 a 10 footer to convert to a extra living quarter and to carry misc camping stuff and my 82 Honda CT 110 trail bike . Just need to figure out should I get a gas or diesel rig . I’m sure there are pros and cons . Hopefully in 1 1/2 years maybe sooner . I can visit my youngest son and his family in California . I do miss my grandkids there .

My understanding of van life is NOT the major brands like sports mobile and aluminess but instead the diy cheap Selfmade ones.
A 150k Sportsmobile isn't just that, same in regards to alu stuff. [which is mainly to show balls. Inthe mentioned 60ies a VW Typ 1 van was big enough for a family - a 4 meter long van. An econoline is 5,50 meters long. NO-ONE needs that stuff really]

Regina Estrada Probably because all you would see is a building in an industrial area that has a lot of metal laying around and machining tools and guys bending tubing, welding and grinding those welds. It’s not pretty but they get the job done in there so you didn’t miss much. Really nice folks. Awesome products.

Very nice van. But looks like a gas guzzler. Especially with all the extra HEAVY stuff added on to it like the bumpers etc. Sorry but for me gas cost is a deal breaker. Maybe if I lived in it full time the gas bills wouldn’t hurt too badly.
