@@Denniz69 This is a very large community that already has experience hosting servers on older games.(plutonium, iw4x, S1X, and others) I’m sure if we had the files and maps, we could figure the rest out

@RōninShowsNoFear from what I’ve heard. The problem came when they switched to the new engine. Supposedly they found a way to let people play without having to buy mw2 and that’s what activison had a problem with. Ive also seen someone mention the possibility that activison didn’t have a choice. They probably have a copyright thing that they have to enact for things like this.

I'm sorry but EA, Activision, and Ubisoft need to go. But they won't....
because people keep giving them money lol. the truth is, 90% of the player base is too casual to care they're being fed garbage over and over again and will continue to buy, over and over again. It also seems to me that a lot of the non casual players don't leave because cod is the only game they're good at or it's the only one that provides the kind of gameplay loop they're looking for. The only thing that can knock these companies out of supremacy is better games from other devs, but those are far and few between as well.
@MikeH3853 1000 PERCENT. THIS IS IT RIGHT HERE. This is literally the best explanation as to why Triple A devs continue to produce garbage despite protests from gamers. I talk to my brother about this all the time. I'm sorry to say this, but some of the blame needs to be placed on the consumers. Most Activision executives aren't even gamers and they don't even care. I can see why they don't care. Why do they even need to try if they will still make money regardless of what they do.

activision does have the “legal right” to give the cease and desist but what does it really tell you when a multi-billion dollar franchise has to shut down a non-profit fan project. this is why i want XDefiant to actually succeed and compete with cod is so activision and the developers actually have to listen to the players and stop trying to turn an arcade fps game that we’ve known and loved into basically a dopamine casino with 0 skill involved.

Such sad news to wake up to man, I had such high hopes for this game and I completely understand why this happened but its a shame regardless. Now all we can do is pray that nothing changes with any of the current CoD clients. The hate towards the sm2 devs I've been seeing on Twitter is crazy too considering they were doing this as a passion project free of charge not accepting donations or anything when its Activision being the fun police

Hopefully the developers who put all the work into SM2 are able to port their work to the Unreal Engine or to Unity and remaster the Maps, so we get to play a better Call of Duty, that is actually new and fun to play.
Okay but real talk, what kind of bone headed move was it to completely change engines mid development and then encourage pirating a copy of the new game needed to play this? Activision probably wouldn't have gone after them if they stayed with MW2 and kept insisting people buy the original game.

@@t7274 Yeah on their FAQ after the engine change they had a section about wanting to provide the game completely free of charge. These clients typically encourage buying the original game as it helps get Activision off their backs, but they just put it out there it was 100% free
it was not about that at all. A sm2 dev mentioned "I'm not gonna go into the details of the letter, but that's not what it is about. It's about IP, not licensing"
Activision stays taking Ls. I been saying everyone needs to jump ship, let the company sink and rot, for them to learn a thing or two. That'll never happen, casuals have there escape and take any screwing Activision offers with pleasure. They'll never learn, but really I blame the fanbase for not taking matters beyond to fix it. I stay uninstalled on all things Activision, doing my part. Keep up the great content, and sucks for those who really are trying to keep the good parts of COD alive, but unfortunately it's not worth it anymore. Let it fall.

First and ngl we knew this was gunna happen I mean someone does their job and does it better than them. It's unbelievable that most of these companies today would rather be hated and beg you to give them money versus just making a good game and getting praise and having a good reputation that would've helped them in the long run
i mean the maps are activision property you could make an argument that the gunplay is cod inspired but its a clear cod clone.
@@Astelch its not that it isn't a Cod clone but that they refused to go back to their roots which got people hooked to playing their games in the 1st place. Cause if we're being honest here activision can make a good COD if they really wanted to but they're focus more on micro transactions and bundles and to me it feels like they've lost their passion To just make a great game versus a quick cash grab game.
@@Astelch You could also make the argument that they don't like that fans can do their jobs better than they can. Which when these things happen is usually the underlying reason. Same shit happened with a bunch of GTA mods. All kinds of modders were making mods to improve the overall quality of the old gta games and right around when the "remakes" were being announced they all got threatened with lawsuits. It's insecurity to the max. Beat down on your fans with your billions of dollars so that people buy the inferior versions of the games that they market as "definitive". Same thing happening here. They got wind of a better version of their games and their fragile egos couldn't handle it.

They were making a game using _Activision's_ assets - regardless of motivation they are _well within_ their right to react this way.
I'd bet it's more _financially_ motivated, or done out of legal principle - not everything is as sinister as you imagine it to be.
It was a pretty dumb idea to build their foundation on Activision's assets - why not use an engine with full-access like Unreal?

There were mmods for CoD 4 that did what this game did just on a smaller scale. One was called Open Warfare. Companies nowadays don't like mods.

Modders can still revive Sm2. Release game code so it can be further developed and released by someone else.
So disappointing to see this news but ultimately not surprised. I've always wondered how the CoD franchise would've been different if it was under a different publishing company. Even EA. Just a thought experiment.

I don’t buy Infinity Ward games anymore only Treyarch games I just bought Cold War 2 months ago and skipped the new COD.
They did this with their WoW game as well. There was classic WoW private clients (also free to play) that were also shut down by blizzard aka activision then they turned it around and released it on their platform and made us pay a sub to even play the classic shit that came out in 2005 lol. Shits wild of a company.

how exactly do they have any property rights over this project to begin with? can't he just make something slightly different and then argue it's technically not the same? even if it's the same engine or not, where does the intellectual property aspect begin and end here?
I have not bought a cod game since ghost and I could tell they were going straight down the hill fast. I think the last cod I touched was ww2 and that better then current cod. I don't like mw 2019, cold war, vanguard or mw2 2022, the new engine and animation update just killed it for me, it doesn't even feel like cod anymore. Activision killing this project has killed my hopes and dreams for a single fun cod to come out, I'm so disappointed and sad, just straight up miserable. Here's to playing cod4, mw2 and bo2 for the rest of my life.

When a bunch of a people made "Halo on PC" aka El Dewrito instead of Microsoft giving them a cease and desist, they left it alone until the release of the master chief collection on PC and even then instead of just slapping them with a cease and desist they worked with them and asked them to stop development due to them finally releasing the entirety of Halo on PC. I was hoping Microsoft would acquire Activision because for the past like 5+ years Microsoft have been really good with gamers but they just keep getting cockblocked by other companies so I guess we shall have to deal with crappy Activision as every gamer won't make a stand and stop buying/playing their games

I don't get this logic. Plutonium and XLabs are the pirated version of the games, and SM2 is a mod that requires you buy modern warfare. And they take the one down that would have brought some money to them?

I want to play a cod game, but MW2 is outrageously expensive and also scummily monetized, titanfall 2 is always down, battlefield 4 has no active servers in my region and TF2 got stale.

What tf did they expect though, the data/asset sets/packs they used has copyrights on them. Using them no matter the age from when they were first issued it remains copyright. So yeah, I don't blame Activision for implementing a cease and desist because these guys did take some of their asset packs that cost Activision a fuck ton of money to build and develop.
And no, I am not a full fledged supporter of activision, in fact I would have liked to play this. The last cod I actually bought was Cold war and I was super disappointed and Vangaurd was worse during open beta. MW2 is better than cold war and vangaurd but I still haven't pushed myself to purchasing a game at $70 where you have gems like Tarkov and Star Citizen that is less than $50.

I didn't want to be a naysayer, but I was always concerned about how much time SM2 devs were willing to sink into a project with such shaky foundations. Not only would it have to go unnoticed by Activision, it would have to be so good that it snuffed the life out of the myriad of other custom clients that exist at this point. Let's be real, it's a pattern that these clients don't live on past the initial TH-cam hype wave.
With the amount of effort and talent to pull SM2 off, they could probably have made a game from scratch by now. Hey, all the code they've already written would most likely still be useful for that. We have Unreal Engine, Unity and Godot now; there's no need to work with Activision's old turds to have a game.
Maybe I'm completely negligent but why do people developing stuff like this allow themselves to be "found", you can't threaten somebody with a lawsuit if you can't find out who they are. Guessing nothings really going to stop a billion dollar company from finding you, unless you have some top top level opsec

Just a thought: who among you bros think that Activision's decision to shut down X Labs is purely ?
Here's why:
A. Imagine facing a good Kuda or KN44 AR user (Black Ops) with your trusty Hemlock or Lachmann 556 in Rust? Won't that be great?
B. It would bring avid fans of each release together. And most likely bring in a new wave of players too, adding to the pool of COD addicts.
C. $$$$$$ - i don't even think I need to mention this. But if I am a "retired" MW2 OG player. And I heard that I can play my favorite MW2 OG guns in a game against other COD players from other releases, I will definitely whip out my cash and buy it for a chance to prove that my favorite MW2 OG guns are better than anyone else's!
IceFrog gave Blizzard, specifically Warcaft III a new lease in life when he created DotA. Heck he even revolutionized eSports. DotA2 right? I am baffled as to how Activision failed to see this possibility. A chance to revitalize and literally ressurect retired and resting players from their own older releases.
It would've been awesome if XLabs was allowed to complete the game. I can only imagine COD MW2 OG squads facing off BO3 squads and such or just a mix of everything competitively.
But Activision's snatched that dream away from us.
Well, time to not buy MW3, cause let's face it. This shit, plus the fact people are gonna get their hopes up again just like MWII and get fucked over again. It's time to break the cycle.
