Kia Picanto 2021 review

  • The Kia Picanto is sticking around in an ever-shrinking segment shunned by Aussie buyers.
To some degree it's fair enough. What works on the streets of Seoul or Tokyo doesn't always translate well to our great expanses here in Australia, but if you're sticking to a metro capital, isn't the Picanto all the car you really need?
We've tested the refreshed for 2021 Picanto range for this test, from the base S manual, to the GT-Line auto. We weren't able to sample the updated version of the top-spec three-cylinder GT manual, as it arrives later in the year.
What did we make of it? Both cars were driven several hundred kilometres over a weekly test, and were analysed for their value, design, practicality, fuel consumption, drive experience around town and on the freeway, as well as how they stack up on the warranty and safety front.
There are a few small surprises you might not expect, and a few that could make the difference between picking the Picanto over either of its main rivals, which include the MG3 and Suzuki Ignis.

In the UK, the top of the range is the GT-Line S which has a 3 cylinder, 1 litre turbo unit putting out 99bhp which gives it a 0-62mph time of 9 seconds and takes you on to 140mph.
It's great for those country roads with its 16" alloy wheels mated to low profile tyres; cornering like it's on rails.
It has stop/start technology, keyless entry, wireless Apple Car Play as well as Android Auto along with it's own built-in SatNav which is excellent

Just drove one today. Loved it. It drives really smoothly, there’s plenty of leg room, it turns the corners really well. Over all it’s a great small car. I liked it better then the Mazda to be honest.

Me wife,s 2012 1.0 manual Picanto still her daily drive here in SA. Do about 19-23 km/l. Super city car accept for low profile 14" rubber and flimsy rims, causing quite a bump thumb ride and ended up with flats and bended rims twice as potholes are aplenty over here. True review!

i have this car, and on freeway it does 23km/L of fuel, its basicly hybrid-class car fuel consumtion.
yes, in cities it can do about 12-15km/L but still, its fun small car to drive,
warranty is excelent, cheat to maintain and it doesnt lose too much value depreciation over the years as it is cheap to begin with.
    what more you need?
10/10 for anyone who needs a car to get the job done.

Saw one of these in the street the other day and it stopped me in my tracks. It looked great, especially in white with red bits and pieces. The comment you made at 00.30 were sentiments said 50 years ago with cars like the Mazda 1300, Datsun 1200 and Toyota Corolla which became the "big 3" of Japanese cars, sold in large numbers and paved the way for Japanese cars in Australia. I do grant you though that in 2020 with our obsession with cars that are much larger than many need folks probably don't want these types of cars. The comments you made about the Picanto's omissions was silly, particularly with regard to rear seat passengers. This is a budget car. If in the market I would definitely look at one of these with the more powerful engine. In a manual it would be a lot of fun!

Bought the S model new in Auto in 2018, absolutely perfect little quality built car.
Up to 60,000klm now, only tyres and a battery required so far.
I believe its the 3rd generation so these cars do have history.

European Picanto GT line 1.2 comes with start stop push button, keyless entry and ISG system. The auto is 5 speed but called AMT, has tiptronic function which has faster acceleration time when selected. Unfortunately no paddleshift on the D style steering wheel. That is the main reason it looses a star out of 10. The second is due to safety features missing but include automatic braking which is the main function I needed. I can drive happily and feel safe with this feature activated. Rear passenger space is not its strong point both in terms of knee space and in terms of having to accomade 3 adults. Maybe some may opt for Hyundai i10 which has better rear space but will loose out of having this amazing looking and internally luxury feeling car. 8” carplay / android auto screen with perfect sound 4+2 (tweeters) speakers. Will subtract one more point for fuel conaumption. (6.4-7 l / 100km). No hybrid technology apart from ISG system. They could have added a second system for additional fuel saving or for emissions lowering purposes. Nevertheless I think it is first in the supermini category (1.2 GT line Picanto AMT) but can certainly improve as discussed above. No wireless charger at my region but added a USB dock/pad. There is a dedicated space for it above the 1 zone automatic climate control system and a usb and a 12V socket just below it. The rear boot cargo cover opens simultaneously with the rear boot, its space is enough for my needs as a city car or for two people going holidays a hotel or an apartment.

Dissapointing to find the new model will have a Dual Clutch automated manual gearbox rather than a proper torque converter box. I have the 1.25 auto in 3 spec. Its great except for fuel consuption which is only 35mpg. Have had two courtesy cars one manual and other auto which had much the same mpg. I use the motorway a lot and its fine there with plenty of acceleration and fantasic brakes. Yes the ride is choppy but that could be the very hard tyres they fit oem. Might have to wait to 30k miles to change them for softer ones.

Can't understand why you have the GT version in automatic, surely you should be testing the manual version otherwise, what's the point of it being GT?

    • @fivish
      @fivish 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

A city car needs to be automatic or the up-down on the clutch will be tiresome.
Having driven the auto and manual I can confirm 37mpg on the auto and 38mpg on the manual. So no downside to going auto!

The microcar segment is all but dead Down Under. That's cuz most of us Aussies are hillbillies who don't give a f..k about the environment and need big guzzling cars to accommodate our growing bulks and compensate for our small brains with big wheels and engines.

Maybe I'm getting to be an old fogey, but I really don't care at all for these touch screen Android Auto/Apple Car Play screens in cars these days. A) They're going to be hideously outdated and look out of place within 5 years B) I don't trust the electronics in them will last the lifetime of the car C) Most of the functionality can be had by using a Bluetooth -> FM radio dongle for $10. Not a selling point to me personally. An AM/FM radio with CD player is simple and timeless... but I guess this is what people want. However, in this segment of the market, it seems Kia is king here. I'm disappointed with small car offerings elsewhere. Given inflation though, those prices have jumped a fair bit since this was filmed.

For the segment of Vehicle it is, it actaully handles well round the bends, is quick enough and holds up fine on the motorway. This gt line is a great car for young buyers who want something of this size that isn’t too boring (like an i10) 👍 Great job Kia
