Puckett Cigar Box Guitar thanks for sharing! This has really inspired me :) I've just bought what i thought was a second hand erhu off eBay, turns out it's probably a gaohu (even more high pitched - God help us!) And the local violin shop tried to help me set it up but unfortunately snapped one of its silk strings. So now I've got some repairs to do before I can use it... still if you can make one out of a tin can then there's hope yet.
@@StopFear racist? I didn’t get the impression there was any hatred behind it? It certainly references a culture, but there’s more than one race in china anyway
Really interesting sound, I wonder if it's possible to use a slide in your left hand (to shorten the string and get different notes) and a bow in your right hand.
Hi, this episode is amazing. I never thought that such kind of ugly spring bridge could had reverb effect. With this idea, how the "spring bridge" be developed to CBG ?
This is the coolest thing I’ve seen in a long time. Kept blowing my mind😆 I was like- bad ass…a homemade erhu! No way…He put an output jack and volume knob on it!! No f-ing way…He added reverb!!!🤩😵😵 I’m a guitarist thinking about getting an erhu, and I really needed this👍👍👍
That sounds how it is supposed to sound. There is a guy who used to, maybe still comes, to UC Berkeley campus and around a few densely populated heavy foot traffic areas and played something exactly like this. I doubt he and Puckett guy in the video are from the same area though. So I doubt it’s the same guy.
when you play an erhu there is an inner and outer sting you apply pressure to one of them at a time with a push and pull motion inner string is usually set D scale 1= Do and outer string D scale 5 = So
Nice... I made my own erhu (after seeing one played by a guest at a Korean celebration), a 6-sided oak box (from leftover flooring), thin skin face (from a salvaged bongo), a dowel and tuning pegs from a hurdy gurdy. I did buy an erhu bow on Ebay. The bow passes between the two strings so you don't rotate the bow rather you push away to play the higher string or pull towards you to play the lower string!
This is great, I've been looking for a design for a "raw" erhu and this is the best I've seen so far. Are the strings made of steel and what is the bow hair made of? Cheers!
Hi... you are a genius, you gave the idea to put a piezo pickup into my customized coconut erhu.. I have a mania working on customized string instruments... look like we have the same hobby.
You have to either place the bow when you replace one of the strings, or unscrew the end pin of the bow, thread it in between the two strings, and then reattach the pin :)
Ide yg bagus
Fantastic!!
When you get it back to him, ask if you can shoot some video of him playing it and post it. Too cool.
Michael this was when we first met before I added the pickup ... th-cam.com/video/HIp6WdOm1Ys/w-d-xo.html

If it has silk strings, it’s probably very old, or just quite high quality
The soundtrack of "Big trouble in little China" :D
Loved this! Has potential.
Actually the real soundtrack to The Bug Trouble In Little China had a sung pop song which was very blatantly racist. I am sure you know the one.

That's a great idea, worth a try....
Thats how the instrument works. look up Erhu videos on youtube
I sure hope you take your camera with you when you return this...would be nice to know how it is supposed to sound. haha
Grandpadew this video was taken when we first met before I added the pickup ... th-cam.com/video/HIp6WdOm1Ys/w-d-xo.html.
Such a unique sound, like their version of the Diddley Bo....sure would have enjoyed hearing after your installation....thanks for the share.
what kind of strings do you use?
Lol e hu
This thing sounds more like The Devil went Down to Hong Kong
I was about to be like no way but then I saw the part and I was like holy shiiieet u right like some sorta grudge sounds

Should of tried a pentatonic scale on it ...Excellent Presentation 😊
Are you and Rob Lowe some distant relatives?
Pronounced "are-hoo", the word Erhu
That's actually awesome. I wish you could play it like the original Erhu. Because i really want to hear it being played by someone who play Erhu 😂
the guy i built this for can really play

I thought this instrument's bow string was loose. Your fingers tightened it as needed to get the right tension.
i’m sure that’s true

That's the authentic Chinese sound we have heard in movies and doco's from China, very cool....
far freaking out
What the heck

yes. i got anxiety when he played it. but it was overall good. i'd play this

A video on how to make it would be great; I already made the body and the "stem" just by the video
I feel like I have look behind me because of how creepy it is
you miss the BRIDGE...
Maaan you could play some wild rock on that thing 😂
Schizophrenia music
Looks cool but bootleg
Interesting, this thing definitely needs some improvement, and I wish you can play a real Chinese traditional erhu someday
Excellent work.

Im about to start my own home made string instrument. This was exactlty the kind of out of the boxbox thinking I needed
Very interesting build, ingenious design. Nice touch adding the spring.
Spring Reverb, cool!

might be a recycled material gaohu or a different bowed Chinese instrument. Erhu has like a hexagon shape.
Hello John cena
It is basically like the Tyvan Byzanchy except it has 2 less strings and there is no head and the bow is slightly different along with the strings.
Just make the erhu with wood you have wood right?
Pretty awesome, do you not see the r in Erhu? Hahaha
The bow almost looks like an old coat hanger. Cool!
Did you just make your own?
How do you get the bow strong in the erhu strings? I'm confused I'm sorry I don't know much
You have to either place the bow when you replace one of the strings, or unscrew the end pin of the bow, thread it in between the two strings, and then reattach the pin :)
...and we have LIFT OFF!
I want to hear him play it
Woah
Sounds cool now 👍
perfect
