  • Raising Geese. Join us for a glimpse into our daily winter routine with our flock of American Buff Geese on the homestead. Geese can be an intimidating poultry for some, but we want to show you how easy it can be to keep them if you have the space. Our geese are an important part of our sustainable homestead, and we hope this video will inspire you to consider raising geese on your own homestead too.

We know not everyone can have geese because they are loud and take a lot of space, but it is amazing how easy they are to manage (not really the horrible monsters they are often portrayed to be "if" you know how to work around them).

Thanks for this - I have 2 Chinese geese - MUCH MUCH MUCH more loud than your entire flock. I am hoping to do a small pond for them and fingers crossed they will start laying next year :)

I think the Chinese Geese are really good layers as far as geese go. I've never kept them but do like their looks (very unique). But I also know they and their relatives the African geese are very loud lol. That is one thing we do like about the American Buff Geese they are fairly quiet and pretty docile geese. Are you planning on growing your goose flock in the future?

Great video my FRIEND….do you get eggs from your geese?

Glad you enjoyed it! The American Buff are not known for their laying ability, basically they lay well enough to breed but not much more which is ok for us because they are very good parents. We do usually get a couple eggs a year and actually do like the taste of them when we have them (usually early in the spring when they start laying but it's to cold to let them start collecting).

Have you ever thought about using a hay feeder to give your geese hay? Because then they wouldn't be able to waste it and then you could force them to eat more hay if you wanted. Also how many pounds of grain do 12 geese eat through the whole winter with no access to grass would you say?

We have thought about it, but they don't consume it like the larger animals do. They do pull it out of our larger hay feeders and eat a lot of the ground (i.e., what the larger animals waste or miss). We have kept records of what we purchase in terms of grains over the year, but its been really hard to accurately calculate it for the geese since they get some of the portion of the oats that gets sprouted for the sheep and sometimes some of the extra wheat etc. that we sprout for the chickens. Maybe this coming year, we will figure out how to keep better track, but with two bucket systems that take up a fair bit of space without adding a third setup. So the short answer is we are not 100% sure

@Hickorycroft Farm Oh got it the only reason I was wondering is I was trying to figure out how many geese is to much to handle I'm thinking 12 to 15 pairs but unsure of how much that might cost me to feed for a season. I've got buff geese on order from two different hatcheries so I should be set on my future goose flock.

@@miniatures1 12 to 15 pairs should produce a lot of goslings! That's great that your geese are on order though
