There have been times throughout wrestling history when fans have been begging WWE to push someone. Names like Daniel Bryan, CM Punk, and, more recently, LA Knight come to mind immediately. But sometimes the inverse happens in that a push occurs which audiences absolutely do not want to see. No, on occasion there have been times situations like this have been outright rejected by the fan base, often very vocally in fact. What are the biggest examples of this phenomenon? Well, that’s exactly what we’re going to be looking at right now, starting with Roman Reigns.

I really don’t care what the old dumb attitude era fans they were the problem I liked baby face John cena old attitude era fans forced cena to lose a lot.
Roman’s failed push all stems from, in my opinion, the break up of the shield.
Shield breaks up. Rollins, new attire, new music. Ambrose, new attire, new music. They basically became new characters who also feuded with each other.
Roman still came out to the old shield music, wore the shield gear, and ignored the break up.

I've always thought this. They could of at least changed the gear it looked odd him in the vest and everything without Seth and Dean there. But hey then came the tribal chief one of the best characters of all time
Roman perfectly fits in this category, But it was bittersweet cause if he didn't had that push back in 2014-2020, We probably wouldn't get the Tribal cheif gimmick years later.
Roman’s initial push was the main reason why I tuned out of WWE for the rest of the 2010s because it was intensely frustrating how the company were relying on him too much at the expense of hurting the momentum of other wrestlers like Daniel Bryan, Dean Ambrose, Samoa Joe and so many others. Although he has massively improved, but the fact that people instantly put him in the GOAT conversation within like 3-4 years after his heel turn it’s just insane to me. That scream recency bias.
How wouldnt we?the tribal chief gimmick is about Roman being the leader of his family..after shield break up . They easily couldve went that direction if they wanted..but I'm not complaining I FW big dog 2015,he looked badass and I was super casual back then not going to iwc online

Its still a shitty gimmick...they kept trying to push him regardless of how fans felt...the tribal chief gimmick wad successful because of the people around him and not because he became brilliant over night. Rollins and Ambrose are still better acts because they're able to carry that main eventer roles on their own.
I LOVED John Cena around when he was literally the face of the company, but I was a kid in that time. But I can definitely see why the older fans despise him, seeing the same old thing for 10+ years can get very annoying

Honestly. On the Royal Rumble 2015 video, so many comments say "Why is everyone booing Roman?" "How could they boo the Tribal Chief?". It's honestly insane how much of a 180 Roman's Career had.
Probably one of the funniest moments in Romans rejection is watching The Rock's reaction and realisation in real time that the fans were not happy. You can litterally see him listening to the crowd, get a bit confused, then, the penny drops. He's like "Oh. Crap! They do not want this!"

Another factor for Jinder was also the fact that it was an obvious cash grab to tap into a foreign market. Like if WWE had not announced it's expansion into the Indian market within weeks of Jinder's rise. It could've been slightly more bearable
The other problem which has been talked about by other people is that they didn't do the obivous story of a jobber who fluked his way to becoming champion. Just painting over his history and instead going with either that he was a main eventer the whole time and fans were too stupid to see it, or just going do typical 80s route of the foreigner who became champion and the fans booing him because "he'snot from around here" (which is both racist and synical as all hell). Go and watch the video from Partsfunknown where someone fantasy booked him as a champion and it actually worked better.

As much as people love Dom now, man I can never forget when people were not getting behind him when he first debuted in the WWE (or well when fans were able to attend live events again.). Whether people care to admit it or not because I know just about everyone loves Dominick and Rey, Dom is and will always be a Nepo Baby. His character is great but he looks like he doesn't lift weights consistently and his variation of the 619 is worse than The Miz's Yes Kicks. I like Dom though.
I actually prefer the earlier version of Dominik Mysterio. The nice guy. The current version of Dominik is now just as obnoxious as Austin Theory(who I absolutely despise). The same goes for the Miz.

Roman reigns heel turn at SummerSlam kicked off the next boom period of wrestling we just didn't know it yet.
It almost didn't happen either apparently. It took Roman pushing back against the bad creative at the time for him to return.
@@Elhefeschlomo yeah but the fact that it literally took the company like six years and a global pandemic to finally figure out that a heel turn would be highly beneficial for Roman’s career really goes to show the pure incompetence and stupidity of the WWE higher-ups, especially Vince McMahon. Those bad years really could’ve been prevented if they had just pulled the trigger sooner.
the Sad thing about Eva Marie's 2nd run was that the company wanted to create the hype that Chelsea Green is running now. difference was Chelsea was more natural while Eva was more forced upon.

There is no denying that Roman Reigns has come along way, but my God, his disastrous babyface push from 2015 to 2018 marked a dark period not just in his career, but for the entire WWE programming. It was so damaging to the product that various wrestlers were always being pushed aside, sacrificed or had their career sabotaged by Vince McMahon, due to his massive erection towards his precious golden boy. I consider it a miracle that Roman managed to recover from all those years of bad booking because those were very very dark times.

I think the funniest thing about Eva Marie is how someone who's obvious in incredible shape and has a very respectable athletic background could just be so uncoordinated and unathletic in the ring. But that's not a unique thing in pro-wrestling.
The 2015 Royal Rumble is a prime example of why Roman (whether he was a face or a heel) is where he is now. Being born into a famous wrestling family. Yet, wrestlers like Rick Rude, Mr. Perfect or Scott Hall never held a world title.
Pre-Mr. Perfect Curt Hennig was AWA World Champion (if that counts 🫤)

I didn't really hate Roman reigns baby face. I think it was just wrong place wrong time. Sure the Baron Corbin dog food was stupid and didn't work in modern wrestling. However a lot of is feuds really were solid. Him and Rusev for the United States title, Roman taken out the authority, Roman reigns Brock Lesnar at least the first time.
The problem is they buried many others for him to face brock just look at bruan he was the most over thing during 2017 but once he faced Brock it was over because they wanted Roman to beat him
You're free to feel anyway that you want. Roman definitely had "go away heat" with everyone else during that time period. This is going to sound awful but the only thing that could stop the booing was a cancer diagnosis.

The current heel turn is more of a story progression thing rather than a reactive move to something that was failing.
It seems like in WWF/E each generation had two main stars who were friend/enemies. 80s had Hogan/Savage. New Generation had Bret Hart/HBK. Attitude had Austin/Rock. Ruthless Aggression had Cena/Orton. Now it's Reigns/Rollins.
If Batista came back as a surprise entrant in the Royal Rumble then it would of worked... I remember they advertised his return heavily on Raw before Royal Rumble, made it obvious he was gonna win

Turning a failed push into a heel is a good save
The Rock turned babyface in April 1999 not the summer of 1998. And all The Rock had to do was turn heel and he was a star. He basically never needed to be in a faction. Once he turned heel, he stood out on his own
He turned face in the end of summer 98, but quickly turned heel again during the Survivor Series.

There’s a deep dive somewhere on YT that reviews every match/appearance of his from debut to heel turn, analyzing crowd reaction and fan signs, and there was never the Roman-level hate. If anything Jerry Lawler’s typical heel commentary backfired because it resonated with some fans and some backlash did follow, but it’s not as bad as the lore suggests.
I feel like Roman's push was heavily affected by what CM Punk said after he quit. That's when fans noticed and started to voice they didn't want it.
It’s really hard for a babyface to sustain or even reach the top position. People get frustrated with them easily as seen in case of Cody and John Cena, even when they are having mic skills and ring skills.

I hated Roman with a passion when i was a teenager. I was FURIOUS when he beat Lesnar at Summerslam in 2018.
When they brought Backlund back in the mid 90’s to feud with Bret, even at 10 years old I was like wtffffffff? This guy was the champ? In a ring full of athletes and monsters he looked terrible.
I love Roman Reigns and his whole family. I didn't like him as a heel, but that's because we're not supposed to like the heels.

Brock shouldn’t count. Him being a part-timer was the whole point of this character by that time. Vince never tried getting him over with the crowd as a babyface. He was the big monster heel that only worked when they paid him or he felt like it.

I never hated Reigns. Ever. Yes, Vicne pushed him too hard but he is a great guy and his tribal chief character should have been the one to end the streak. Reigns even fsced everyone he once faced in the previous decade. Basically ghosts of his past in the forms of John Cena, Daniel Bryan and Brock Lesnar. Even they saw a difference. He came back bitter, colder, savage and confident.
The amount of boos Roman got the next Raw after beating Undertaker is the same amount of boos Dirty Dom get on every Raw. A little better writing and we can have one of the greatest heels in Dom other than Menace Randy and Vince McMahon.

Everything on Dom is interesting but the problem I have knowing the outside I could never believe is there a romance story line between him and Ripley because I knew that Ripley was with Buddy Matthews and that he was with his long time girlfriend and they never brought either one on to complain about losing their partner I understand they couldn't do that with Buddy Matthews but they could have tried to do it with the long time girlfriend who is now his wife. I can't believe the liv Morgan thing either because I know he like his father is very devoted to his wife. Charlottes push being rejected comes down to one thing Nepotism. There was a huge crop of female wrestlers who deserved the rub more. Becky Lynch and Asuka being more popular choices. I just feel Charlotte is way too overrated. She has talent ill give her that. But how can we like you if you dont go away? She is the epitome of go away heat during that feud with Rousey and Lynch.

There was a time when the Rock was winning too much in the early 2000’s where fans would boo him and scream “rocky sucks” even tho he was a babyface.

Nothing against Jinder Mahal but let’s keep a stack, the guy never had any business being real champion, let alone sniffing the main event. I get that the company were trying to appeal to the Indian marketing, but the whole experiment was a failure from the get-go because they just immediately put the championship on him without a proper build-up which made it hard for people to take him seriously. You have some wrestlers in the business who are meant to be megastars and then you have Jinder Mahal, a glorified jobber who literally cannot put on a good match to save his life. The fact that he won the WWE championship over so amazing wrestlers of the past whom were way more deserving to be world champions is just absolutely disgusting to me.
With a decent build up anyone maybe can be a top guy..the issue with Jinder is he went from jobber to closing PPVs in literally less than a month..I don't know why wwe did this..a midcard title win ,a few wins here and there and then mybe 2018/19 he becomes world champion coulve made sense
