- People (non-Hungarians, that is) are often confused by what Goulash is, exactly. Most of them think this dish, pörkölt is goulash. But actually, goulash (gulyás leves) is a soup and it would contain more vegetables an a type of small pasta. This Hungarian dish, pörkölt, is a delicious hearty stew.

Keef I once made those German “spangle” noodles using a sieve with hole letting the batter drop through in long blobs. Can’t say we enjoyed them because I never made “spangles” again. I do like paprika in stews and soups.❤😘

Love the hungarian stuff recently, try Finnish Lohikeitto (salmon leek and potato chowder)
I’m just back from Hungry and have to say that the authentic Hungarian Paprika makes a huge difference to the end result. The stuff we get in supermarkets is nothing like the real thing.
Have you a slow cooker? I'd suggest putting this dish together, then dropping into a slow cooker on low for about 6 hours. The veg will completely disintegrate, and the meat will be perfectly tender. And from some of your comments, energy expenditure is an issue; the energy cost on a slow cooker is lower than that of your stovetop burner, or oven.
I always forget about my slow cooker!
