Travelodge and Premier Inn prices in London have Rocketed in the last year, what used to be £40-£50 is now £90+ +. They have become ridiculously expensive most nights now (still get the occasional cheaper night, but generally they are very expensive now)
@ChubbyChecker182 It can depend which brand you go for. Premier Inn Hubs are usually the cheapest, although the rooms are often smaller, and some don't have windows. Depends whether you can live with that or not. I stayed in a windowless room in Amsterdam for a few nights earlier this year, and it was fine for those few nights. And of course it depends on the time of year, days of the week etc. Everywhere will be more expensive in high summer and around Christmas.
@@ChubbyChecker182 That's my experience too, tonight the cheapest Travelodge anywhere near the centre on London is £109 and that's Aldgate East, another dodgy area! Being born and bred in central London, my advice would have been to go a few miles out and use the tube to get in to the centre for the tourist stuff.
Glad you didn't lose anything Gabriel. When I travel solo, I always stay at a hostel whenever I can and I've stayed at dozens of hostels throughout the world. the only time I got robbed in a hostel was when it was my fault really. I left a few articles of clothing to dry on my bed as well as some toiletries and when I came back, it was all gone! Thankfully it was all stuff that was easily replaced and inexpensive. Now I NEVER leave anything valuable in hostel. I always carry it on me and I feel that it's way more secure that way.
Hi there Gabe we are back from the UK and now back watching your videos I will watch all of them which I have missed .....greetings from Canada.......Effie
This is my main fear of staying in any place that does not have a private room, which is why I avoid it. But even a private room with shared bathroom is okay. The prices in Kuwait seems pretty reasonable, even more so than some places in Western Europe!
Hostels are fine if you keep your passport and money in a waterproof pouch in a money belt right on your private area. A place like Kuwait looks crime free, but not as fun and free as Western European destinations. The police talked to Gabriel for being a tourist using a camera! Looks like a place to get in trouble and be owing lots of money.
I must say the hostel in London did not look that appealing. Lucky you used your thick lock, no accident there✨ I’ve been pick pocketed in Paris, such a traumatic experience, especially if you have your passport stolen. Glad it all worked out in the end for you.😊
Kuwait looks soul less. Hardly any greenery...just concrete and glass. My uncle worked there in the 60s and 70s as an Air Traffic Controller. He loved living there with his family. It looks very clean and orderly and I love the palm trees and older architecture; just needs a few parks, flowers, avenues of different trees etc 🙏🍁☀️🙃
Sheesh, make up your mind Jenny! You went from calling the place "soul less" and a concrete jungle, to telling us it was your uncle's utopia and saying you love the palm trees and architecture, then finishing off all negative again - you basically created a reverse praise sandwich in your contradiction full paragraph there. I think you're a little unhinged or tipsy?
Wild story! My guess is that there is a local guy who is from London who had a special lock cutting tool with him and he probably books hostels around the city to rob tourist. Spends one or two nights to scope out potential victims then moves on the the next hostel. If it is cheap enough and they find enough money and laptops and cameras the guy makes out like a bandit!
There is an uptick in major tourist cities of women and men dressing as tourist to steal and pickpocket. I wouldn't be surprised if someone did something similar posing as a tourist and spending the night in the hostel!
His average hotel spend is close to $100 so for say 50 to 60 dollars more he could have gotten a hotel. It's better and cheaper to stay slightly out of Central London. Trains can get you into Central in a matter of minutes.
hostels aren't even cheap anymore in europe. paying $100 a night to sleep in a bunk. I'll spend the extra $20 to stay in a cheap hotel . Hostel inflation has gone mad.
That food looked GREAT! Wish I could have some. That white stuff is called "Toum". It s made with garlic, lemon juice, olive oil and salt. I love that stuff all over shawarma.
Hi Gabriel, there's no doubt that sharing space with people you don't know is a trying experience and you're right someone working inside very much has access to the room could be involved it looks like they didn't have enough time to snap the lock. I could see that as an issue you're walking around sensitive areas with a camera that looks suspicious because no one is walking around the area and now with what has happened everyone is on high alert it's a challenging time.
About 15 years ago I traveled for almost a year through Asia, you know in the classic way: Backpacks, trains, busses, hostels... Of course I was worried about safety but Nepal. India and of course China are relatively safe and everybody always used to say: The hostels is where you need to watch out, its your fellow travelers who are the big problem. You know, within that "community" its always the sport to spend as little as you can so you can keep traveling. Running out of money means going back home and work some shitty job for months before you are able to go back at it again. So in these hostels youll find some pretty desperate people, I mean, that fancy camera or phone or whatever, they can sell that to some local fence who doenst ask questions and thats another month of travel right there. Beats a month flipping burgers at McDonalds back home, right? So it has little to do with the hostel itself or how secure it is. Its the people, the kind of crowd they draw. People who some way or another live in some sort of fantasy and will go through lenghts to make sure that bubble doenst bursts and gets them confronted with the reality of actual work.
Sadly yes in hostels or anywhere your fellow travellers can ve con artists. Sadly in Uk not a lot of police around either. I dont use air bnb s just safe or security locker available. In Mexico hotel nothing so sure lost couple of items there! In hostel in Turkey some Russian girls got robbed of all their items as they left everything on beds! I use a steel padovk to lock my stuff away, in same hostel someone came in and stole a girls mobile, when he returned police were waiting for him.

These Middle Eastern countries have seemingly unlimited money and build amazing infrastructure so modern and colourful but there doesn’t seem to be anything to do! it’s like they want to appear western but haven’t quite figured it out
You should've entered the grand mosque! It's allowed to enter and take videos and pictures, it's really beautiful. And the white sauce that you had is toum, it's basically garlic sauce, usually eaten with chicken and bread, they are also added in chicken shawarma.
Hi - Londoner here. That's awful. I don't have a spare room but if you'd reached out to your community I would have found a better place than that. Actually, why don't you reach out to your community more? I am sure that a lot of your subscribers would be only too happy to put you up for a night or two for free, as a thank you for all the entertainment you bring. You must have subscribers in most countries you visit, don't be afraid to ask! I know you like to keep it a secret where your next country is, but maybe get rid of that idea, let your subscribers know in advance where you're going next, and you probably will save a fortune on hotel bills!
Was pickpocketed/robbed once in maybe 25 trips. At a swap n shop type open air marketplace in Mongolia, I had a shovel in one hand and something else in the other, and wearing cargo pants with the pockets that bulge out of the leg. The perp was tiny and used a razor blade to cut the pocket and grab the wad of cash I had, maybe $30. It happened so fast, I did not notice until he was walking briskly away. Highly skilled.
That's my greatest fear of staying at a hostel. In some countries, I can get a hostel for $5-$10 and then think about how much money I would save after a week, but then I think about how easy it would be for someone to break into my locker and steal my camera equipment or other valuables, especially a passport. It's not worth worrying. It's best to spend the extra on a hotel.
Don't let this incident put you off coming back to the UK as you know London is a massive city and anything could happen there you were just unlucky this time

Glad you didn't get robbed in London after all. It sounds like you were targeted. Losing my passport and money, or having them stolen, is always something I worry about whenever I go abroad. I usually find a little hiding place somewhere in the room, where I think a thief wouldn't look, and store things like that there. I don't like cleaners coming into my room and always put the Do Not Disturb sign on the door handle. I guess its not so easy in a hostel though.
@@uKaZdAb Absolutely! Although I did have a scary experience once in Malta. I thought I'd found a secure hiding place underneath a wooden clothes hanger, but wasn't expecting a cleaner to come in while I was out and do a thorough sweep of the floor. When I came back, my stuff had gone! Luckily they were still in the building and I got it back. It wasn't their fault, and they had no intention of keeping it for themselves. They thought a previous guest had left it!

FBI Robbery Definition: The taking or attempting to take anything of value from the care, custody, or control of a person or persons by force or threat of force or violence and/or by putting the victim in fear. I think, Gabe, that you were almost burgled, not robbed.
Nobody actually says burgled. 😛 At least not in the US. There isn't really another word for it. Stolen from? Thieved? Ripped off? Swindled? Hoodwinked?
@@GabrielTravelerVideos Almost had everything stolen? You're right, perhaps it's just a Britishism of mine, but the official definition stands on both sides of the Atlantic. I hope you never get robbed, Gabe.
@@goostrey4210 Attempted robbery once. A car full of guys pulled up alongside me and pointed a gun out the window. Fortunately I had literally nothing with me, so they just took off.
I was robbed in Paris in 2012. Had to go to the police and file a report. It's not fun to do in a foreign country. Didn't that happen to you a long time ago?
Cheap boltcroppers mark on your lock Gabe. You should get a national coach up to county durham & stay at my place free next time you have to come to the uk, we'll show you real northern hospitality & some great countryside & castles etc.
I was wondering if you carried your passport or left it behind and how that would work out if ever stopped by the cops. sorry you got hassled by the cops and had the issue of a thief in the hostel. other youtube travelers have also said they leave theirs behind. I always carried mine. so what is the main reason for not carrying it? is it just for convenience or the thinking that if robbed it would be taken etc? glad everything worked out, new days new adventures!
I carry my wallet with me when I go out. So it's partly a matter of keeping them separated so that I don't lose everything at once. Also I think it's more likely to get pickpocketed or mugged on the street than having your hotel room broken into.
As I said in that hostel video I honestly don't know why you stayed there. The excuse of everything expensive doesn't wash as there were a lot of cheaper options to choose from. Maybe not 4 or 5 stars but nice 3 star hotels and guest houses etc where you can find private rooms with private bathroom for not that much. Please take a lesson from this bad choice!
This is the first incident like this in thirty-three years of staying in hostels. People get their stuff stolen in hotel rooms as well, so nowhere is completely safe. Fortunately it doesn't happen very often. When it does, you deal with it. All you can do is take certain precautions and then don't stress it too much. An important one is to have some emergency cash hidden somewhere and have multiple debit and credit cards in different places.
I’m English & I don’t go to London much. Worked there back in the day. London has probably more tourists than Londoners. The only place we’ve been robbed whilst travelling was in Greece. We also had a bad experience whilst living in Perth Western Australia. It’s sad you have to constantly be aware of your surroundings etc when you are travelling. 🥲 glad it was all ok in the end . Told you you could stay at my place when you were in London.
Thank you Gabe. You are saving me lots of hard earned money.
Guest from Chile got his passport Robbed in Czech Republic in a hostel I was staying at. Nightmare situation
@@RovexHD Yes, this is one reason why I never stay in hostels.
I always find a crevice or loose tile or something to hide my stuff. Has worked thus far.
@@PlanetaryCitizenbut they re meant to hand in anything... I use a safe in hotels or hostels. In Istanbul they had cctv and when sthing occuurred police did job and got person who was from outside. Another time a guy got card stolen but why did he leave it out? I didnt really feel for him as he had plenty of money and wasnt going to miss having to cancel 1 card to be honest there are worse scenarios..
I remember your Colombia video. Be safe out there.
We didn’t have a problem when we visited two months ago! But we heard we needed to be weary of pick pockets and phone snatchers in advance and we kept an eye out. No attempts to get us luckily
That white mayo looking condiment is called toum and it is made of garlic, lemon juice and vegetable oil! I think it comes from Lebanon.
Happy Travels
If your passport is stolen in London the American embassy can make you a new passport. There is a fee. I don't know how much.
Good morning from Arizona 3 AM.
@@GabrielTravelerVideos Where was that?
Oakland California@@goostrey4210
Thank goodness you get away with that trouble
Did the lights come back on or did you eat in the dark? It’s supposed to enhance the tasting experience 😀
London is no longer the city we all loved and was proud of.
I was robbed in Paris in 2012. Had to go to the police and file a report. It's not fun to do in a foreign country. Didn't that happen to you a long time ago?
Yes, in Paris and Bogota.
👍so glad to didn’t get your stuff stolen.. I remember you said back in the day you got your backpack stolen in Paris.. peace ✌🏻 out bro
Be safe Gabe, this world is getting crazy fast!
Cheap boltcroppers mark on your lock Gabe. You should get a national coach up to county durham & stay at my place free next time you have to come to the uk, we'll show you real northern hospitality & some great countryside & castles etc.
Gabriel - if you would like to meet up while you are in the UK. I'm currently in London.
Do you have any plan to visit Zanzibar and east african countries?
I was wondering if you carried your passport or left it behind and how that would work out if ever stopped by the cops. sorry you got hassled by the cops and had the issue of a thief in the hostel. other youtube travelers have also said they leave theirs behind. I always carried mine. so what is the main reason for not carrying it? is it just for convenience or the thinking that if robbed it would be taken etc? glad everything worked out, new days new adventures!
I got stopped in Russia by police ad. Didn’t have my passport on me. I got frogmarched back to the hotel to show them it
I carry my wallet with me when I go out. So it's partly a matter of keeping them separated so that I don't lose everything at once. Also I think it's more likely to get pickpocketed or mugged on the street than having your hotel room broken into.
There is a substantial difference between *robbery* and *theft*
When most people say "I was robbed", they mean "there was theft".
neon jungle without beer...
not for me 100%
enjoy in travels Gabe and stay safe...
strange times nowadays...
I stayed in the same hostel last year for one night and another guest had his bag taken, its a sketchy area.
What a bummer, nearly getting robbed in London, as well as the official robbery, high prices..I avoid that place like the plague
The London Hostel incident with no forced entry looks like an inside job to me.
Min 6:35 😮 closencall. Sleep with yo money and documents. Also wear a knife repellent shirt or sleeves. You sleep safer
Name and shame the hostel please
Toum garlic sauce was the white stuff
I’m English & I don’t go to London much. Worked there back in the day. London has probably more tourists than Londoners. The only place we’ve been robbed whilst travelling was in Greece. We also had a bad experience whilst living in Perth Western Australia. It’s sad you have to constantly be aware of your surroundings etc when you are travelling. 🥲 glad it was all ok in the end . Safe travelling x best wishes from Lyn in Liverpool 🇬🇧 UK
Have a walk down Church Street - it looks like the middle east and London Road looks like Turkey. Kensington and Smithdown Road have gone too.
@@Elatenl That's because London property prices are so high. So many people cannot afford property in the London area ... hence they live further out and commute into the city.
@@Elatenl "Every capital city" ? Cannot be true. A couple of days ago The Times reported the *average* price for London accommodation is now £2,600 per month. There must be capital cities which cost less. Canberra ? Ottawa ?
I went to Liverpool once. London only

Hey Gabe, you were robbed in Colombia one time if i remember correctly, your backpack was cut open ? I myself have had my cell phone stolen there, but It was my own stupidity that caused it to happen.
It could happen anywhere and remember it’s the people not the country
"fanny pack" that has a different meaning in the UK lol.
14:18 is probably tarama salad roe or whatever it is called.
No, I think it was aioli.
Ur a big star Gabriel - a big famous TH-cam star - be careful
Come to Goa. I'll show you around.
Please be safe. As our world in crazy right now. 🦋🙏🏻🦋
Thanks for sharing. As you mentioned that there were lots of expats there, I'm curious about the primary attractions and opportunities for foreigners in Kuwait.
Good video as always but the problem with Kuwait City is that there just isn't a great amount of anything interesting there!
Before oil there was nothing there but nomadic goat herders
My only experience was I had my eurrail pass stolen once in a milan Italy hotel room.
Wao you were lucky. That would have been terrible
You are so wise & careful! That is why you don't list Pss Port. Happy!
almost got robbed and also questioned by the police - jesus, man, stay safe!
will you invest in more thicker/ secure padlocks?
Yes, that is a very good idea. That lock was pretty good for the size and luckily it worked this time, but worth paying for something else that's even stronger.
Theft not Robbery?
Two cameras, two locks. Beginners have so much to learn.
After the freedom to film and wander....this is a culture shock, but digging below the surface, all that glitters is certainly not gold......a change, it certainly is, but travel destination, probably not......too many "regulations"
Welcome to the UK. Lol. This is what we now live with on a daily basis.

😂😂😂 seriously???
What a horrible thing to say and utter nonsense , I’m 52 and never had an issue , don’t generalise it’s not fair
If you’re living with crime on a daily basis then you’re doing something wrong with your life!
thieves abound no matter where one is!!
You should have come across on a dingy you would have been put up in a 5 star hotel.
London is too vast for such generalisations. I find it enchanting, exciting and full of lovely hideaways 🎺☀️🍁🙏😊it has given me lots of happy days of exploration ☀️🍁🙏😊🎺🍂
London is not English city anymore. Most popular name is Muhammed for newborn.
@pathofexile7529 I didn't believe that would be true when I first read it, but I Googled it, and you're right. Muhammad has been the most popular newborn boy's name in London every year since 2019.
Gabriel i guess do you want visiting to Central Asia like Kyrgyzstan und etc.
Maybe take a break in California, give a few months for the macro politics to calm down.
Eew that places looks very unappealing to visit. My anxiety kicked in with you walking along that noisy traffic!
There are some who believe it's a great place.
No one's asking you to go there lady. Go back and lie on your beaches or whatever it is that tickles your fancy, whilst our man Gabe enjoys the world!
Glad your property remained safe but just to be a pedant you weren't almost robbed because Robbery is theft from the person with the use of force or the threat of force but you were not present so no attempted robbery but an attempted theft.
You should show more often money from countries you visit. You can skip US dollars and euros, but something more exotic would be nice to see.
Lucky lucky lucky re locker - I'd say inside job...
The delicious garlic side dish is called Toum.
