  • This 1951 Lincoln Cosmopolitan Convertible was one of only 857 Cosmopolitan Convertibles produced by Lincoln back in 1951. This particular example is believed to have been originally purchased from Lincoln-Mercury of Phoenix, Arizona on April 30, 1951. This classic Lincoln also spent a number of years in Texas as well, as a part of a large collection by local collector down there. The Cosmo, being a top-of-the-line model back in 1951, featured upgraded chrome trim on the rockers and fender skirts were standard equipment. Under the hood on this '51 Lincoln Cosmopolitan is a 336.7 Cubic Inch Flathead with a single 2 barrel carburetor, which pushed out 154 horsepower at the time of manufacture. The flatty is mated to a smooth shifting Hydramatic Automatic Transmission, which was a factory upgrade from the standard 3 speed manuals. The exterior of this '51 Lincoln is finished in beautiful Brewster Green giving this Cosmopolitan a distinctive and elevated look. The chrome bumpers and trim appear to have been recently re-plated and are in excellent condition. The dark green cloth convertible power top is in very nice shape as well, and it goes up and down with the simple push or pull of a button. This 1951 Cosmopolitan is sitting on 4 new Coker Classic Wide Whitewall Radial tires, which complete the exterior look of this Lincoln. The Pea Green Leather Bench Seat interior is also in wonderful shape. The steering wheel and dash are in excellent condition, appearing as they did when this Lincoln rolled off the factory floor. The dark green carpeting is in nice shape as well and complements the look of the car. All 4 side windows on this 1951 Lincoln are powered and they all go up and down with the simple push of a button.
** This classic Lincoln has been SOLD.

The leather really enhances the interior over the cloth interior on other Lincoln Cosmos.
The 51 has subtle styling improvements over the 50' Cosmo, better looking full length trim
on the sides, archway tail lights, a massive rock solid front clip that says quality and luxury.
Whoever owned this car, if what we are seeing here is all original, they deserve special mention for how well this car has been kept. Nice to see a bright and shinny finish after all these years. The 50 Merc Custom had a lever you could pull from under the dash to give the car a boost of speed when passing. Wonder if the Lincolns had that feature ?
Proff that size matters when it comes to luxury and beauty.

The Cosmopolitan also as the top of the line had a one piece windshdshield, the less expensive EL Series, had a 2 piece windshdshield. The automatics in these are the GM hydamatic.

Although the big '49-'52 Cosmos were really nice, especially with the unique headlight treatment, etc.... Just imagine how P.O.'d customers that bought a '51 were as soon as the '52 was released!
Next to the "bathtub" cars, that '52 looks like it's straight out of Outer Space.
I wonder if FOMOCO gave any inkling to the Buying Public that they'd so drastically modernize the '52s?
