I'm a member of a NMRA Operations SIG and go to their annual meets when I can. There's a lot to see and hear from modelers who are experts on subject, as well as layout design. And I also have more than enough cars and locos to ensure that I have complete gridlock on my layout!

I've just got into operations at my local club - we have an operations day one Saturday afternoon each month. Maybe 12 or 15 people, including a yardmaster or two, a dispatcher, and everyone else is an engineer or conductor. It's great fun, we use JMRI to develop switch lists, and we can spend several hours completing out tasks.

Hi Jimmy, is that "Local" of "Loco" coffee this morning.
I have taken your train game and turned it into a computer program based strictly on my layout. My idea of using the train game is to get the rolling stock out of storage and get it on the layout so I can take photographs for the car card system that I have almost finished.
My locos are a hodgepodge, but then the "Back Story" of the fictional switching railroad explains the mix. Like you, I have spent a lot of money on locos that I don't/can't use. Some can not be easily converted to DCC and some are just junk from day one. For the most part, I have quit buying locos and rolling stock. When I do buy something it is a rare name, not one of the big roads.
Today's coffee is whatever the wife found cheapest at the store.
    Another great video.
    Thanks,
    Gary

My current layout is the first one I've ever done where I had an operational scheme and some basic parameters regarding era going into the build. And yes, this can save you money as opposed to just buying stuff willy-nilly for padding out the length of your train. But where I've encountered difficulty is finding the appropriate rolling stock for my layout - which is freelanced as a fictional location served by Southern Pacific some time in the '70s (originally it was going to be the '50s, but I impulse bought an SP caboose that was a 1970's repaint of a caboose class that entered service in the 1960s). Still waiting for those boxcars I've reserved... and I might relax a bit on what road names I select. I can probably get away with some Railboxes if push comes to shove.
As for coffee, it's currently 5:30 PM here in San Jose, CA, so I'm having a beer. I'm slummin' it tonight and having a PBR. :)

Great Video as always :) Operations is the end result of my layout when finished. Gonna have too much fun making the scenery for a while though :) Too lazy to make coffee today, so its Mount Hagen Organic Fairtrade Instant coffee for me. It's actually pretty good for an instant believe it or not.

Great video! I have yet to really start any operations on my model railroad. But you have given me a lot of great tips in this video for how to go about it. Thank you

Microlayouts are usually full of operations because it just looks ridiculous to have a train go around and around, even if it's a layout of a model engineers park, in such a tiny space. A great problem with ops, though, is the modern era, when the mixed goods train gave way to block trains, having only one type (frequently one class) of wagon, and often the only thing you get to operate is to manage four trains coming in and out of a loading loop, each roughly identical except that some will be full and some empty.
Vittoria instant, 100% arabica. Not that good.

I recommend checking out Lance Mindhiem's series of books on designing, building, and operating Switching layouts. They clear up a lot of the mystery and provide a lot of tips.

Are there rules for the “Train Game,” and my layout is mostly urban, with three industries and two long “spurs,” a small rail yard, and one small spur. I’d have to send you a picture of my layout, I guess. Also, what is the smallest layout for “Ship it,” or “JMRI,” operations software?
