    So I tried softly introducing one of these fairies into one of my roleplay sessions. A knight was carrying a jar with a captured one, and when he got ambushed in the dark, he let it loose and covered his visor as well as blanketing himself under his cloak. The little devil slit many people open before they could even realize what was happening.
    The other roleplayers looked at me with legitimate fear in their eyes.
    "Why would you bring something so horrifying into this roleplay?"

      I wonder how they'd handle a fairy assassin. Honestly I don't buy fairies with huge swords because it'd be hard to balance ( just like humans with huge swords, the center of gravity would be a difficult issue to deal with, and flying with something that affects the balance that much would be even harder). However, a super-fast, tiny, flying assassin with a thin "rapier" coated in poison could slip easily past any guards, through any defenses, place one fatal stab and be gone before the target even starts to realize something's wrong. A fairy could have a hit count in the hundreds before anyone even knew the deaths weren't natural.

      Regardless of their tec level we are talking about a creature 20 times the strength of a human who considers combat tactics to be just as important a part of education to the public as real world modern humans consider evolution important to their citizens. Trained to kill before they can even walk, trained to use both ranged and close quarters weapons before they are on solid food, and didn't know what a civilian was until they noticed that some members of a village they attack enact strange tactics that involve running screaming and hiding rather then trying to engage in direct combat.

      Devian stretched his arms as he walked through the the corridors of his palace. He stopped at an open window, leaning on the wall next to it and looking out at the gardens. A servant girl tending to the flowers saw him. He smiled. She quickly averted her eyes and returned to her work. Nobody else seem to have been in sight. He closed his eyes, inhaling flower aromas.
      Then, a sudden sound, like a tiny bell ringing, right in front of his face. Devian snapped his eyes open, only to see a flurry of motion right in front of him, accompanied by by more tiny bells. He took a step back, but a moment later it was all over. He looked around frantically and finally saw the source of commotion. A black-clothed fairy was pinned down to the floor by to of his kin wearing royal uniforms. Razor-thin blade lay snapped in two next to them. It must have been as long as Devian's arm and it must have been that blade clashing against guard's swords that made the bell sounds.
      "My lord", he heard a voice of the Spymaster in his head "Are you unhurt?". Devian looked to his left - a fairy in an ornate officer uniform hovered in the window frame. "No, I'm fine, Sahatoros". The fairy bowed his head apologetically. "I beg your pardon, my lord. We were almost too late. Another moment, and..." The fairy shook his head. "I already told you that we absolutely must install fairy meshes on all windows! Will this finally convince you, my lord?"
      Devian looked at the tiny assassin again. He was already bound by two guards and on his knees, his spectral wings tied just as his arms. "I thought I was paying you and your fairies so that I wouldn't have to worry about your kin attacking me. Meshes, wind-blowers, fire curtains and other gimmicks are not cheap, you know!"
      "But my lord's life is even more valuable, is it not?", the spymaster said as he slowly flew down to the attacker and his men.
      "Fine. Fine. But if I'll ever be in such a danger again, it's your head! Yours and your people's. We have no shortage of fairy mercenaries after all."

      Nice idea, but it wouldn't work well. Newton's Laws of Motion put a limit on how much high strength can benefit you in combat.

      About the "needle-like weapon through the eye"-idea: I don't think a creature of such low weight could penetrate the back of the eyeball and reach the brain, as the eyeball itself is pretty though. You could always increase the speed of flight for the fairies, but that would also increase the danger to their own bodies. So i believe it is more about driving poison in the carotid artery and other weak parts of the human body that have a good blood circulation.

      It has to do with mass and perception. Bugs and insects perceive time much slower than humans do. So while their ability to react is slow, their ability to see an attack before it even happens is very high. Its why ants can sometimes quickly crawl into a crack before a human foot comes down. Its also why a frog's tongue needs to be lightning quick, so that even if the bug sees it coming they can't do much to avoid it.

      As long as it's a crossbow designed for use by faeries. They can't just be scaled down crossbows, because then whatever material used to make the string or the limbs would lack the length (important for draw distance), string flexibility/limb rigidity (important for the tensile strength of the limbs, the stretching force of the string, and the ability of the parts to return back to the pre-latched state while maintaining their functionality), and the bolts would not have the mass to drive them into the flesh more than a few millimeters at best.
      The proportions would have to be different. They'd need longer limbs, and the bolts may be a bit longer (think shooting small nails). As to what the string should be made out of, I have no idea (animal tendon is the only thing I can think of right now), and at its scale, the crossbow would still be very fragile and prone to bent parts.

Especially if there are multiracial empires or alliances as opposed to the single race political entities normally shown in fantasy. Equip your army with normal weapons because it works great against many opponents (elves, orcs, other humans), and then you run into a fairy death battalion. Equip your army with primitive flamethrowers and razor-wire tennis rackets and you run into the enemy's troll brigade and dragon riders.

    The issue I see with them using very long weapons (proportionally) is it would somewhat negate their biggest strength (being hard to hit). I think a long weapon would just pose an unnecessary risk of them getting disarmed or the weapon snapping/bending plus it would reduce the rigidity which they would need considering their lack of mass/power.
    There is bone behind the eyes too which I doubt a fairy would have the power to thrust through. At 10m/s and 10th human scale you'd be looking at about a 20th of the kinetic energy of an arrow from a 40lb bow. There is a small gap which the optic nerve goes through but hitting it would be like trying to thrust a rapier through a 2 inch moving target protected by an 2ft sphere of opaque ballistics gel. It would most definitely blind you but I think getting through to the brain would be a lot harder than you think.
    Even if it did go in to the brain it's no guarantee of instant death, it would be a very tiny area damaged due to how thin the blade needs to be and people can sometimes survive surprising amounts of brain damage, look up Phineas Gage as an extreme example. If they survived the fairy would be extremely vulnerable while trying to withdraw the blade (unless they left it there and immediately switched weapon).
    I think the fairies should make peace with the fact they probably aren't going to get a one hit kill and use a "death by 1000 cuts" strategy. The kinetic energy from flying would be an order of magnitude greater than the force they could produce from swinging a weapon so a long cutting weapon would be wasted so I think they'd be better off relying on momentum combined with slicing movements.

    • @JimGiant
      @JimGiant 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No doubt but the penetrating that deep would make it quite difficult to withdraw the blade so they'd likely be swatted in the process. A long blade would make the fairy much easier to intercepted before they got close enough to do it and you don't need a long blade to blind someone anyway.

      @gregorymckenzie7511 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      First, I want to say, I did enjoy this video, but it did make me think... A lot.
      The one problem I saw with the long weapon idea is how it would pose a problem with balance (It's not necessarily an idea negating problem, just one that might alter fighting style to some degree). Sure, they might be able to pick up the weapon just fine thanks to the square-cube law, but metals are quite heavy, and actually holding the weapon out can pose a big problem towards maintaining balance. It might be manageable on the ground, but in the air, their movement would likely be hindered somewhat due to counteracting forces (gravity ↓. lift ↑). The blade or needle would likely have to be held downward and under (or near under) the center of lift in order for them to maintain speed or mobility.
      How the weapon is held would effect the speed and trajectory of the wielder in flight; assuming that the downward force produced by the wings is mostly perpendicular to the body while idle, and can be adjusted for forward movement just as the angle of the body changes depending on counteracting forces caused by their movement. The way I see it, this limits them to thrusting and stabbing attacks.
      Holding the weapon upwards and close to the core of the body might be useful in initiating a diving maneuver.
      Holding the weapon out above the shoulder line might then be used to guide them through the dive, with the dive becoming more steep the closer the weapon is being held perpendicular to the body.
      Holding the weapon down below the waist while moving slowly or hovering would be good for maintaining slow movement, or their hovering. If they want to speed up and move forward
      Holding the weapon downward and diagonally closer while flying forward, such that the body is more or less horizontal in the air, would be good for maintaining high velocity, or accelerating, but only when needing to close distance between them and a far away opponent.
      Similarly, holding the weapon closer to the legs while moving at high velocities would help them climb, as torque is being applied behind the center of mass and the center of lift.
      Anyways, I think you get the point.
      The problem I see with cutting or slicing (if there's a difference at all) is in positioning the blade in preparation for the arm's motion, which might bring the blade to cross paths with the wings. The last thing they need is a shredded or missing pterostigma. That would send them spiraling out of control pretty quickly. Otherwise, they also lack strength and the mass to make a deep cut. Now if they're using a wide blade, as suggested in the video (that razor blade thing), then there's another problem. The long, wide blade would act more as an air surface due to its lower aspect ratio. To keep a high speed and maintain a proper heading, it would almost always be required to be held to one's side. It would be incredibly difficult to position the blade to make a good cut.
      Also, I just wanted to say that simply because something has a sharp edge doesn't make it sink through the flesh easily; an error somewhat implied in the video around 13:14 . I've had pretty hard times cutting through a cat's pelt with new scalpel blades. Velocity, mass, and blade thickness must all be considered; with more mass lowering downward acceleration of the blade as it is slowed down by friction as it cuts. I'll let this one slide though, as I think the mass of the fairy (on the larger end of the standard size scale) combined with the mass of the blade, when travelling at high speeds would be comparable to having an X-acto knife thrown at you.
      On another note, I know standard fairies are supposed to be super maneuverable and quick, but I just can't really imagine it. In my eyes fairies, angels, or any other 6 limbed, winged humanoid all normally share one problem (that is only negated if the wings aren't actually used for traditional, propelled flight. Gliding doesn't count). Ignoring the wing ratio needed to maintain them and the energy needs, most of the time, the wings are slapped onto their backs, and they still have those regular human shoulders and arms getting in the way. The problem is, if the body is held horizontal to or diagonally (such that their feet are behind them) to the ground, then it is physically impossible for them to complete full wing rotation; being limited to only about half the full motion. They can do about half the downstroke, and half the energy conserving upstroke. Their flight is severely impeded by their own physiology.
      Actually, the more I think about it, fairies are a lot less guilty of that, given the types of wings they have (much more flexible and easy to change from a downstroke position to an upstroke position & vice versa). Not to mention their small bodies require a lot less downward force to keep them in the air.

A better substitute would be Silicate crystals like Quarts, Citrine and Amethysts that have a 7 on the Moh's Scale and an Absolute Hardness of 100 and a little harder than glass. (No to rose quartz as most of them have fragile inclusions that easily chips off which to us jewellers is a nightmare to shape) Plus it could have some flavor and these crystals are common. Oh man, the tension of maintaining an alliance with fairies would be nuts. Nuts, I say.

      W00dledude in my world them and imps are like ghosts. They don't quite exist in the world, but the m they can be seen by some.
      They (Lusatians) have a big holiday on the summer solstice because on that day you can see all the fairy lights in the trees.

    From what i heard fairies are often portrayed to be somewhat "allergic" to metal. It seems to be like poison to them... and now we know why because otherwise Fantasy settings would be drastically different ^^

      They're allergic to iron, specifically. Steel, depending on the setting, is fine. Even if it's not, bronze is still an option and since fairies aren't exactly trying to bash their weapons against their enemy's steel, it isn't really an issue, methinks.

      A wooden spike is just as good as metal for "through the eye" shots. And obsidian flakes for sharpness. (Or bronze, copper, glass, fantasy metalsmithing)

    A very good and creepy analysis! One thing that occurs to me, though, is that while you factored in the disproportionate strength of fairies, you hand-waved the actual strength of the materials their weapons would be made from. Consider how small their hands would be. In order for them to get a grip on a weapon the handle would necessarily need to be quite thin. I don't think slim swords would work out for fairies for that reason. More natural materials could be the answer. Consider fairies harvesting porcupine quills or spines from lionfish. Various plants have long thorns readymade for piercing. I think metal or glass blades would be better for draw cuts. As for an effective defense - What about a cape or extra long, billowy sleeves? Whip a layer of cloth through the air like some of the eastern martial art forms demonstrate and the fairy will have much more difficulty getting to your vulnerable spots. A person could also use vines with thorns as a deterrent by mounting them to a helmet in a similar manner one might use an aventail or mail coif.

    • @petra123987
      @petra123987 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      StutleyConstable Natural materials would also solve the problem of fairies (in some settings) being allergic/vulnerable to touching metal.

    • @DzinkyDzink
      @DzinkyDzink 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      So they are not allergic - the metals don't serve their purpose and thus they don't use, preferring natural(biological) materials instead. Then the whole misconception got mythisizd.

    • @StutleyConstable
      @StutleyConstable 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Petra petra and Nick Dzink - The only metal I know of that fairies are not able to touch in some traditions, is iron. I've heard it called the 'Iron Bane'. This bane translates to steel because steel is an alloy of iron. That would not prevent fairies from wearing protective clothing or wrapping the grips in something. Maybe they would sheath the iron in another metal like silver or gold. But using organic material would certainly resolve that issue too. It's fun speculating like this.

      Probably a rapier or spear kind of weapon.
      Basically ask yourself what weapons you would use against an unarmored human.
      A battle between fairies would probably be a lot of flying around and trying to stab one-another.

  • @scottyrose9106

    Shad, before even watching your video I had the perfect weapon for a fairy in mind. And after hearing you out, I'm certain of it now.
    a 5-6 inch fairy (12.5-15.5 CM) would use a spear that is 8-12 inches (20-30cm) long. it would have a normal spear point at one end and a very curved scimitar like blade in the other. when faced with an unarmored human, strike at the face, and when they raise their hands in defence, slash at the wrists. when the opponent is armored, then spear the eye slits and joints of the armor.
    and the reason the spear world be better than a rapier would be the two handed wielding, and putting their full speed and weight into the strikes.
