On July 4, 2024, HE Tho Chetha, Minister of Water Resources and Meteorology, accompanied by HE leaders and technical officers of Ministries and Departments, together with HE Peng Pursa, Governor of Svay Rieng Provincial Board of Governors and local authorities, inspected the work progress. Rehabilitation of Main Canal and Prek O'Damrei Crossing of Irrigation and Flood Protection Expansion Project of Prek O'Damrei Crossing-Prek Thmey Irrigation System in Kampong Ror District, Svay Rieng Province.
Please be informed that the project to expand the irrigation and flood protection capacity of Prek O Damrey Cross-Prek Thmey irrigation system is located in the border area of ​​Cambodia-Vietnam in Thmey commune, Reach Mondir commune and Banteay Kraing commune of Kampong Ror district, Svay Rieng province. So far, the project progress has reached about 20%.
The main activities of the project include: 1) Restoring the natural canal of O Damrey crossing with a length of 8,287 km 2) Restoring the natural canal of Prek Thmey with a length of 12,600 km 3) Restoring the main canal with a length of 4,876 km 4) Building a red gravel road 5) Rehabilitation and construction of 10 bridges across O'Damrei and Prek Thmey canals; 6) Repair and construction of art structures connecting 50 new canals to irrigation canals; and 7) Construction of community buildings. For the management and maintenance of irrigation systems.
The Minister stated that the development of the Prek O Damrey Cross-Prek Thmey Irrigation System is in order to increase water resources to ensure water safety and security for irrigation in the region in all seasons and help prevent flooding. Use in people's daily lives as a source of water for other areas besides the project and serve for use in all areas.
The Minister further stated that the backs of canals and natural streams will be effective transportation routes for agricultural transport in the area, both by land and water, as well as strengthen resilience to climate change, maintain environmental stability. And ecosystems to promote economic growth, reduce poverty and improve the living standards of people along the Cambodia-Vietnam border.
It should be noted that the project to expand the irrigation capacity and flood protection of Prek O Damrey Cross-Prek Thmey irrigation system to be implemented for 12 months from June 2024 to June 2025 has the potential to increase the irrigated area to about 16,200 hectares and About 3,727 families benefited.
