    I’m using GP5000TL in size 28 and they are the sweet spot for UK roads and ideal for someone wanting to go down the fatter tyre route. Taking the whole picture into account when riding on the flat up a climb down a bumpy road etc I would say they are more comfortable and overall a bit faster than a 23/25 tyre. They change the geometry a touch and make the bike feel more planted and a touch taller but in a positive way. Strong disc brakes fatter tyres and much more composure and comfort are the road bike future. The bike doesn’t beat you up so much as you ride it you can ride faster stronger longer and feel better afterwards too.

    Thanks for throwing the 32c on there. I’m thinking of some gravel races in the future.
    I have 28c s-works rapid air setup tubeless on my 2021 Emonda. Super happy. These tires are great. Just put in a 112 mile ride. Felt amazing.

    Great video buddy. I'm looking at getting back in to road cycling & a bit of light gravel. Seen a nice 2020 Emonda, and this was my main concern, tyre width max. You have confirmed it for me, that 32s will work well. Thanks, and keep the great videos coming. 👍

    I love 32mm tires for comfort but wonder about the aero hit you are taking with that very expensive wheel/tire combo in the process. Perhaps pairing a 28/30c tire with a wider rim would get you the comfort gains without taking a significant aero hit at higher speeds.

    I have a 2020 Emonda SLR6 and it takes a max of 28mm tires. I wish I could fit 32. I run Conti 4 Season tires and never flatted in nearly 20k miles. That's also using sealant and tubes. I found the Continental GP series tires are prone to sidewall failures. I had so many on my Madone I switched to the 4 Season. I replace my tires ~ 2k miles and no issues. Thanks for sharing.

    Nice. I have a Specialized Tarmac SL6 and just about to swap my stock wheels with 25mm tyres for carbon wheels (50mm) with 32mm tyres. The max. rec. is 30mm but I’ve checked 32mm (with stock wheels) and they fit with 3mm clearance…so on the limit. Looking forward to seeing how it rides with the new hoops and tyres! 😀

    Nice review - not techy but real world experience. I upgraded my Trek Domane SL7 4 with these tyres, 30mm at the front 32mm at the back, and they are a great match and improvement. The Domane is not a great stand up and accelerate bike, these tyres helped to take off some of that sluggishness. Moreover, the bike now feels even smoother, even quieter and yes, I am getting better performance on the flats. Recommended, especially if you can get them discounted.

    I’m running 30/32s on mine. Just got back from a 25 mile ride over broken asphalt and got a bit beat up. Just curious about what psi you recommend. My tires are 45-70 psi, I run a little over 60 psi.

      Terry,
      Just check the Continental tyre pressure chart - enter your weight and tyres details (and rim information) and see how you go. I'd say 60 is too much...
      You might be surprised at the low recommendation but it's different now to what it used to be, especially with tubeless.

    I'm contemplating going from 28 mm to 32 mm on my Trek Émonda, but I'm a little unsure of the clearance between the chainstays and the tires. Is there enough room between the two to prevent a build-up of some mud? The video is a little unclear. It looks from the video vantage that it's tight between the top of the tire and the fork crown. Is that the case?

      David,
      It was a while ago that I did that video and I cannot recall the exact numbers but 80 to 100 is way toooooo much if you're going tubeless.
      Best bet is to check the Continental site and find the pressure settings page. You can enter all your details - inc. wheel type (hooked or hookless rims, etc), your weight, and the type of riding your do.
      From memory, I had about 55psi... while riding at around 65kg.

    Great review. I’m on my sub 5.5 kilo maybe too light SLR 2018 with mechanical da9000 but gone back 23s for summer rides. Almost too fast skittish. Light and feel uncertain on damp roads. I need fast 28s. I usually run winter 28s and summer 25s. 23s are so odd these days. I had 5 years away from 23. Oh it runs so fast as AX lightness semi deep wheels light stiff. Bike mental but would love a fairly light stiff aero bike as just super light doesn’t win out flat roads

    Thanks for this evaluation. I'm riding 28 tubeless Pirelli zeros now on. the 2022 Emonda SL6 Disc pro and wanted to know if a 30 would be a more comfortable ride. I definitely notice the difference with tubeless tire vs the R3 clicher. It feels smoother over the bumps and there seems to be much more grip and control . Trek has a recommended going no wider than 28 MM but after seeing this I am going to opt for the 30 on a different set of wheels to satisfy the itch. I think so long as the width of the rim is sufficient it will be fine. THat begs the question . What rim for the 30 mm ? Im riding on the stock Bontrager Aeolus Elite 35, OCLV Carbon.

    Would you happen to know what size tube we need for the standard size tire the emonda came with? I bought the new sl6 and it’s 28 mm stock, obviously i assume you had the same from the factory. But i got a flat and was putting a new tube in (700x28-32) and realized how damn big the tube is. Like there is always a crinkle in it even when i blow it up. Am i supposed to be using 700x20-25mm tubes or something? It’s just odd because this has never happened before. I thought maybe it was a dud tube or something and used another one but same result.

    • @ride-media
      @ride-media  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      TheKauaiboyz51 good question. I did film the tubes at weigh in but didn’t include in fitting clip. But I’ve used what came with bike/wheels - Bontrager tubes 20-25, I think. They were 110g each. 60mm valve.

    • @towerrunner496
      @towerrunner496 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're not kidding on how big the tubes are with 700x28-32c, and I also experienced the crinkle in the tube. Didn't care for that. So I went to Specialized tubes, 700x20-28c. Would it actually be an issue running 700x20-25c, probably not. For myself, since my LBS carries Specialized, I will just stay with them, Oh I am running GP 5000s 28mm tires on 21mm internal width HED wheels.

      @TheKauaiboyz51 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tower Runner interesting, very good to know thanks man. yea i literally just bought the GP 5000’s for the bike too and it wasnt until i put the tube on that i realized it. hmm maybe i should get a specialized tube. i was kind of thinking of running 20-25 instead of the 28-32

    • @TheKauaiboyz51
      @TheKauaiboyz51 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      ridemedia wow interesting it came with 20-25. mine came with 28-32 and i got a flat easily. i dont know if this makes any difference but the rim says its 20mm. so does that mean the tube should be a 20-25 even though i have a 28mm tire?

      The computer mount (also fitting the light, from memory - as this was a test bike) is from Trek: came with the bike package.
      The lights are early generation (front) Bontrager, something-or-other (ie. can't remember the model name). I have the newer version and it's brilliant too, but the first gen is still in use often.

    If this can run 32s on the normal RSL 37s which have a 21mm internal width, would the Aeolus RSL 37V TLRs (which have a 25mm internal and 32mm external width) fit this frameset?

    • @ride-media
      @ride-media  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joseph, that's a great question. And, given that I didn't even know there was a 25mm rim option, I cannot answer you. But I'm interested enough to know more. Perhaps best to consider the pictures here and note now tight it already is. I'd say, if you're going to get the wider rim... well, it's probably best to start looking at a frame/fork combo that has been designed more for the kind of riding you're keen on doing than this lightweight beauty.
      Should you (or I) find out more, let's be sure to leave another comment.
      I'm due to speak with Trek again soon... but no one has yet spoken to me about this 32mm tyre experiment, so I'm not too sure that they liked me doing it on the review bike.

      ridemedia ouch!! Out here in Las Vegas I seem to hit pot holes as I ride at 4:30am in the dark or I do night rides. In the last month I’ve had to replace one GP5000 tyre and a few tubes. Yesterday I did 85km and hit a pole hole which pinched the tyre in a couple places.
      I’m really fed up with ending my rides after running out of patches.
      I’ve considered putting Mr TUFFY ultra light tyre liners in which have great reviews.
      However, I see a few guys have recommended using 32mm tyres which will have a bigger cushion.

      @@Aaron83W - hmmm, interesting. Having just been out in the dark again this morning (fresh tyres... and another story due soon), I understand. What pressure are you putting in and what do you weigh?
      There's a real trend towards lower pressures, certainly with tubeless. Have you tried?
      I'm now using Pirelli P Zero 28mm (first ride today) and they're great but it's the first time that I've thought: too much pressure.
      I'm old-school, so I'm still over-inflating... the packaging offers pressure suggestions depending on rim width and rider weight. At 64kg (not sure what that is in Imperial, but I'm not heavy), I'm supposed to run 75psi (according to Pirelli). Today I started with 85 (just because I fitted them yesterday and I wanted to hear the bead 'ping' into the rim and then I forgot to ease 10psi out...
      They rode nicely, certainly rolled quickly and stuck in corners, but they did feel quite harsh. Tomorrow, I'll go with 75psi and see how it affects handling.

      Riding with 80psi... and, after another adventure this morning - 75km of up and down along the coast in Sydney - I'm liking the tyres more and more. (Maybe I'll experiment a little with pressure but 80 suits me, at 64kg, at the moment...)

    the old gp4000 28's measured out at 31 usually, what i have on now on Paradigm elite rims.(a wider rim) What do these 5000's 32s measure out at actually? Interestingly the conti gran prix four season 28's measure 28 so I don't know why the 4000's were so bulgy. You could also comment on tire pressure- I find the 4000's I run 55/60 f/r

    • @ride-media

      All good points... so, here are my answers: on the Bontrager RSL 37 rims, with 80psi, the GP5000s (32mm) measure 33mm wide.
      As you say, this is going to vary depending on rim. And, when I switch back to the Bontrager tyres, I'll measure the height difference too, but it feels quite dramatic. Interesting how a few millimetres extra can make such a huge difference...

      That's surprising to me. I have Conti GP 4 Seasons in 28 width, and mounted, it measures at 31.4 on a 19 internal, 25 external width rim. I run a 25 width on the front, given how much they balloon.

    Some say that there has never been a day where the wind wasn't blowing at least 30 km/h from the SSW at Heffron Park. And that concrete surface! What were they thinking?

    • @ride-media
      @ride-media  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yesterday morning, the wind was mild - essentially nil by Heffron standards... but the dog count was high, and the smashed-glass-dodge required more than once. But at least there wasn't traffic.
      Crap concrete roads or cars on a Thursday morning in Sydney? I did both. And survived.
