Thanks for the review of the numbers/ballistics. In Tennessee we have areas (Wildlife Management Areas) and seasons (think archery, muzzleloader) when we can only use rimfires for coyotes. This is a step up in power for these limited situations. Ammo availability and only one firearm model so far has held me back. It's "on my short list" just not at the top of it.
Bot a Savage BMAG in December, 2014 and happy to say none of the 2/50 rd boxes of .20gr Winchester ammo had split cases. At the present time, I plan to replace the Savage plastic stock with a thumbhole walnut stock from Boyd's gunstocks which cost me just over $100.00. Looks very cool.
You and I both share the same complaint, the stock on a Bmag is junk, the gun is awsome. I pop the small 8oz waterbottles at 200 yards with mine and would not hesitate to coyote hunt with it. Also happy to say about 500vrounds fired, no split cases.
I have the stainless bull-barrel B-Mag, immediately replaced the cheap stock with a boyd's stock. It shoots great with the 20 Grain Ammo. I hate the bolt, but it is accurate, very accurate. I had great success varmint hunting last year. I replaced it this year with the Ruger 77/17 (pricy, I know) and it is amazingly accurate and totally worth it. Varmints out to about 250yds dont stand a chance (with a decent scope). I love the 17 Win Super Mag. It does have more wind drift than a 223, but not terrible. Nothing like the 17 HMR (also a great round). Also, you can get the ammo for under $13 a box online, and I see it a Wal Mart all the time now.
I got my B mag today after buying my 3 boxes of ammo on faith 2 months ago. I hunt with a 17 HMR before today but look out hogs, here I come. During the small game when a center fire rifle is not legal on management land this is my new hog gun. A well placed head shot and I will not have to go looking for the varmit. It will be right where I shot it.. I have been looking for this edge for many years and now I have it.
Bass pro has the 20 grain vmax for sale at $16 for a box of 50. It will be some time before they carry the rifles. But I managed to get a Savage B.Mag 17wsm rifle for next week for a GA WMA hog Hunt. Hopefully we will get a chance to see how this round works on game. Not the ideal hog round, but we are sometimes limited inGA to rim fires for WMA hogs and coyotes.
Excellent review! Thank you, Thank you! Very awesome how you defined it's capability and price point without leveling undue criticism on it. We are talking rim fire here. Very cool! Thanks again.
I have been having brass split right to rim from neck! Brass shows signs of blow by and accuracy is bad as a result. Unsure if chamber issue or brass being too brittle to seal correct. Using Savage BMag. Wonder if either company rushed prduction and sacrificed safety & performance?
A big if is finding ammo in this caliber. After I checked about ten gun websites I found one selling the .17 WMR at one dollar a bullet. Please tell me where you are getting it for 30 cents.
A more comparable load from the 22 Hornet is the 35 grain V Max from Honady or the Remington Accutip 35 grain both at 3100 fps and easily out performs this new rimfire on coyotes.
I bought a new savage 22 mag that decided to miss fire 3 out of 10 rounds. I cleaned bolt, re-oiled, tried different ammo, no go. it's been away for repairs for coming up 3 weeks. Their meant to be good riffles, though if I went for a 17 wsm, I'd be looking around for a different option, like ruger. savage has a bad rap on 17 wsm calibre at the moment.
Nice.. I have never used any rimfire but I would like to know from you do you recommand use rimfire for ducks! Long ranges lets say +100 to 200 yard and what cal??
Why do we need it? Don't forget there are a lot of countries with very tight gun-owner regulations...like here in Europe. If the government makes a huge distinction between center-fire and rimfire (as is the case in Belgium), a high-performing rimfire is a blessing.
P.S placement is everything(a 22 at 100 mtrs can drop a buffalo if hit in the right place)everybody with BIG guns go for cavitiy shots, everyone with small guns go for head shots. It's horse's for course's
We are talking Rimfire here mate not Centrefire ammunition. and 30c a shot not $1.00 Seriously a great round and will Drop anything the 17 Hornet will given the right ammo for the task.
Ron, I've been out of the loop for several years, is this cartridge still viable, popular, easy to find ammo ect. I appreciate you knowledge and willing to share it. I was thinking about grabbing one.
Sir, I'm not sure how much testing you done with this cartridge, but, have you found that it has a preference for certain rate of twist, barrel lengths, etc? How much does this ammo retail for, at least by you, currently ? And, lastly, what brands of firearms have you tested with this ammo, and do you have any preferences? I thank you in advance ! Chris
+Ron. Good answer I guess it shows the excesses that we have as Americans from our variety of cars to foods and houses The only possible hurt I can see is so many varieties causing price increases. If we had just 12- 15 different cartridges they would be more plentiful and cheaper. Thanks for the reply.. I guess it's like driving a BMW to work over a Buick. They both will get you there, but one has more style.
Comparisons to .223 or other high velocity center fire is silly. This is a rim fire and is the top of the heap in RIM FIRE. Why bother with a .223 when you can get a .243? Same pointless argument. Where I live all center fires are recently banned. Rim fire and shotgun only now. I love my .22 Hornet and reload but I can't shoot it close to home. The new 17 Mag is great little cartridge for varmints up to 100 yd coyotes and I can use it here. I am getting one for my son so I can borrow it.
The 204 Ruger has much superior ballistics because it is a centerfire, operates at much higher pressures and used much more powder. But it's more expensive and not legal for hunting some species in some jurisdictions while the 17 WSM rimfire is. Similarly, the 17 Rem. and 17 Fireball, both centerfires, outperform the 17 WSM. But in the rimfire world, the 17 WSM is King. At least for now. I anticipate a 20-caliber rimfire soon...
First up the 17 is cheaper the run,But push the shoulders out on a hornet to a K or ackley and add hollow point or ballistic projectiles.@11.4 grains of powder= 1 awesome round for(small game)
Do you really think we will be able to get the round at 2/3 the cost of the .22 center fire? You know as well as I, there will be buyers snatching them up and selling them online for 3 times retail. When are the rifles going to hit the market?
Which is tougher, a deer or a hog? Hmmmmmmmmm. Yes it will kill a deer. A 17 hmr will kill a deer shot in the head. His answer is legal. The deer is regulated and the hog is vermin.
***** I know i am a bit late but in montana, the regulations specify that there are no firearm limitations for taking a game animal deer, elk, or antelope. I'm not saying it is ethical, but in montana it is legal.
Iddyrone. Yes indeed. Even at 200yrds my friend. Pick the right ammo for the job and that Pig is going nowhere with no Brains left mate. We Cull with this rifle, Just choose the RIGHT ammo. - Australia.
Prototype round the 4.5x26mm rimfire was faster apparently, 24.4gr at 3270fps. Sad it never got picked up, especially in countries with only hunting semi auto rifles on standard licenses being allowed to be rimfires of certain mm or less😢,
Hi Ron, love the videos but of course the 17WSM is only comparable to the 22H when comparing available factory ammo. Reloading my 22H using 40gr V-Max and 12.5gr of Lil Gun achieves 3,000fps, less drop then the 17WSM, significantly more energy and a much better BC! Keep up the good work
Thanks Trigger. Yes, handloaders enjoy many benefits. The appeal of the 17 WSM is inexpensive ammo that you don't have to reload. High volume rodent shooters don't like policing small brass in dirt and grass, especially when fired from autoloading rifles.
Seriously considered the .17 Winchester super magnum and the .17 Fireball but I already have the .17 Remington , .17 Hornet,.17 HMR, and .17 MachII. That means I can load down the .17 Hornet to get .17 WSM ballistics, and cheaper. When comparing ballistics remember the important number is foot pounds per square inch of frontal area. Solid copper 17 and 19 grain bullets are now available for reloaders. www.gsgroup.co.za/cip.html
I kind of see the .17HMR & .17WSM as being pretty much useless. OTOH, I kind of want a Savage BMAG just to see what is left of gophers after being hit with the .17WSM.
Of course it's to sell new guns. All new cartridges are designed to make us hunters/shooters part with our money. Our other option is to all shoot 22 Long Rifle and 7x57mm Mausers. They'll do everything we need. But I celebrate choices! No one forces us to buy them, they just entice us.
Consider this: Out of 150 FIRED rounds of Winchester 17wsm 25gr, 24 had cracked cases (sent to Savage per Savage's request). Out of 20 boxes of UNFIRED Winchester 17wsm 25gr, NINE rounds had cracked cases. Problems with a 17wms rifle? My bet the culprit is Winchester ammunition.

Unfortunately, the only rifle we have available is a very cheap Savage... Too bad Savage did not develop a fine good looking good quality rifle in that caliber! That will probably kill that caliber...
I have both the Ruger 77/17 and Bull Barrel savage in 17 WSM. I traded out the plastic stock on the savage and tuned it. Ron as alway a well presented review thank you! The availability of ammo is in question. . .
Not a very popular caliber (yet) the scarcity is odd. I'm glad i bought a bunch of ammo awhile ago.
I just got a HMR starting to think I need a WSM as well now.

This round is very capable of hogs and coyotes. Why would you thing it might not be. I have a .25 cal hatsan pcp air rifle that can drop hogs
I would like to see some testing done with this caliber. Like a pork leg, car door , wooden door
I don’t know what 17 caliber bullets cost when reloading the 17 Remington; the cost for these rimfires rounds would really need to be affordable…
Great video mate, Im about to purchase one here in Australia. Cheers!
Excellent review! Thank you, Thank you! Very awesome how you defined it's capability and price point without leveling undue criticism on it. We are talking rim fire here. Very cool! Thanks again.
Nice statistics. Would you happen to know the best brand for performance coming from a 22 magnum?
Muy buena comparación, por favor seria muy bueno hacer la comparación entre la 22 hornet y la 17hornet, estaré atento a su video.

for me I ca only hunt at night with a rim fire, sold the hmr off and got a super mag set up easy decision
I love the .17 WSM.
Only found your TH-cam channel recently, Look at “Young” Ron spitting out great info.

17 Hornet from Hornady, faster 3,650 fps. with 20 gr. v-max bullet, and reloadable...

Mr. Spomer,
Why are energy measurements reported in F*lbs instead of Joules? Tradition? Government regulations? Distaste for EuroSnobs?

Difference in velocity for 17wsm in 16 vs 20 inch barrel?

Are you going to do more on the .17 win mag
Hard to find a rifle chambered for this cartridge in 2022, and harder to find ammo. A great idea, but availability sucks.
My question is it worth it ?? And is it loud and the recoil? Or should I just stick to 556.
Slightly louder than a 22 LR and 17 HMR, but much quieter than a 5.56mm (223 Rem.) Recoil? Virtually none.
How does this cartage stack up the the 5mm magnum power wise? Not velocity, but foot pounds.
It’s a Death Ray,on North East Ohio ground hogs, some get fairly large

22 Mag. the 17 WSM isway more destructive. Even the 17 HMR is more devastating than the 22 MAG

What's the cost on a box of ammo ? These days
I usually see it for $15 to $17 per box of 50.
I'm seeing ammo in the 13.50 range now. Still love this round. 17 WSM is accurate. Look for the bull barrel in the savage and change out the stock. You might need a gunsmith to tune it a little .You won't regret it.
@@paulsorensen1735 Indeed the Stainless Bull Barrel is dead accurate with this red hot little round. Great Advice mate.

Ruger makes a bolt-action in 17 WSM, but I didn't get 1/2 MOA from the one I tested. Solid, well-made rifle though.
Ok thanks, Everyone says the Savage is not a good shooter. Any thoughts on that
PLenty of guys shooting the savage... I just shot a .75 group at 200 yards..
For self defense ? I live in California since it's rim fire I could used it without a bulletin.
I wouldn't recommend it. Tiny 20- and 25-grain bullets with soft lead cores and extremely thin jackets designed to break up on impact.

17 hornet should have stood in the place of that 270
Can it be reloaded??? No
30 cents a round? Hard to justify using this over .223
a 223 is a waste of money unless you are a proffesional Varmint controller.
Do yourself a favour and hit a Pig in the head at 100 yards with a 17 WSM TNT tip, roll it over. Nothing left. - btw I live in Australia.
you can reload the 22 hornet for cheaper
does that take into account the hours spent reloading? and time lost out in the field.
No.. nO you cant
But ☝️22wmr has More penetration.. each one has its qualities but for my needs 22 is the one I need.
HornaDAY?
I stumble several times a day, and the Hornady family usually forgives me. But you are correct. There is no a.
