Cunannan, as a matter of fact, was a genius. He had a shining IQ and a great caliber to build his life. When his father fled away to Phillipines to escape FBI charges for embezzlement, Andrew and his mother were left with literally nothing. He had been brought up in a way which made him filthy spoilt. He couldn't deal with it and started lying. When his lies were out, he killed Jeffrey, David and Lee. Gianni, he killed as an obsession with being special and remembered.

And the thing that actually might have even made it especially toxic is that it never *did* come across as outright abuse- quite the opposite, in fact. Yet, can you call it anything other than that when you fill your kid's head from day 1 with the idea that they are so special it negates the need for them to ever work for anything, and spoil them rotten to the point that they are given NO chance to develop any sense of resiliency or ability to cope with rejection? I mean, we're not just talking the usual spoiled brat syndrome here.. we're talking about a father who *instilled* in his kid the idea that having to work is somehow shameful for how ordinary it is... that it's the "ordinary" people who do the work, and the "special" people who have things given to them. And then, after all of this conditioning into narcissism, for the very father who denied his kid the chance to learn to cope with rejection in any way, to turn around and reject him himself? Yep, that would be a huge psychological breaking point right there, to be brought up like a spoiled prince and then have the very person who made you that way- the person from whom you drew all your sense of self worth- turn and use your need to feel special against you. And that's not EVEN getting into the implication ACS Versace puts forth that his dad may have also sexually abused him! (Admittedly there's not a whole lot of evidence for that in reality, but it does seem to add up in a lot of ways, so I'm inclined to believe there's at least the distinct possibility that it could have been true.) That would add a whooole other level of completely messed up to the situation. But even without that... it's really hard to even fault Andrew for growing up to expect everything of the world and feel cheated when he didn't get it and was instead rejected. For someone to grow up the way he did and NOT become a narcissist who couldn't handle rejection would be a pretty huge miracle. But to be clear: That he allowed that bitter, narcissistic chip on his shoulder to turn him into the murderous monster he became, THAT is fully on him and unforgivable. I by no means am saying that it wasn't his fault he went on a brutal murdering spree! (Sorry this became crazy long, btw! I just found ACS Versace to be a really fascinating character study and I have a lot of thoughts haha)
