He did glamorise lifestyle in the navy. Usually half of those guys he shares that living space with our on another shift so there not in the way. Plus he has suitcases which I never saw any suitcases in my 4 years on aircraft carriers. He's getting a lot of hate because obviously he isn't very accurate and is way out of uniform. (UNSAT)
I just say this, lot of old Navy guys here critiquing Jose, his haircut, his attitude, etc. This is a Millennial in today’s Navy people, the world changes. Is it much different from when I was in Yokuska serving on the USS Midway 1985? not really. Few more modern conveniences today, perhaps a bit more lenient on regulations, they have women onboard, but still pretty much the same. In fact, those berthing areas and heads are exactly the same from the modern USS Reagan to the long retired WWII era USS Midway I served on, right down to the color of the floor tiles and rack curtains. I’m sure a 1960 sailor would have done the same trash talking about me had he seen the 1985 Navy, and in 2055 Jose is going to look at a current video of the Navy and think those “kids” have it so easy! And one more thing, I hated living on the ship in 1985 too, but I’d go back now in a heartbeat if I could, some of the best years of my life. Jose will feel the same way in 35 years, all the BS will be gone from memory, but the good times and nostalgic feeling will remain. Enjoy it Jose, because it really is an experience you will treasure the rest of your life. Ignore the haters, you’re the one serving our country and we all owe you our gratitude for that!
Hi Rich. I too was on the Midway from 1983-1986. I was in VF-151. I agree completely with what you said. I am proud of the 6 years i spent in the Navy and would do it again in a heartbeat if they asked me to. Some of the best times of my life were while in the Navy. Starting with 2 years shore duty at Cubi Point in the PI didn't hurt either...LOL. Hope you and your family are doing well during this Covid-19 thing. Take care shipmate!
Brad Schroder I was ships company, AIMD. I always felt so fortunate to be on the last ship with active F-4 Squadrons, still the coolest naval aircraft ever! I also spent 6 months in Cubi, sent TAD with a Chief, 1st class, and another 3rd class like me during Midway’s dry dock. Boy did we live the highlife working 3 hours a day shuffling parts that were sent to Cubi for I-level repair while our shipmates were back in Yoko living in the WWII era Gaffney barracks ship and chipping paint all day! We never felt bad about that for one second!
Since you've put it the way you've done, I could overlook some things. Generational change is something that many struggle with. Our Navy was a long time ago. USS Independence CV-62 Ops, OI Div. 1984 to 1986. This young man has a whole life ahead of him. When you consider the enormous amount of Debt, I don't think my generation left a better world for this generation. These young people and those who are about to be born; they're going to face a very different set of challenges then we'll ever know. I suppose we could just try to give them whatever support we can.
Rich... I guess my issue is that he is highlighting one small aspect of the Navy and mixing a couple of "it's ok" comments in with the rest of the negative. He's living on a ship in Japan! It amuses me that all of these "I could never be in the Navy if that's what its like" or "Screw that, I'm joining the Air Force instead" comments are people that don't realize he is living in Japan and when he deploys (or deployed, I guess this is a few years old now) he was most likely able to pull into multiple countries in Asia, the Middle East, possibly Africa, and possibly Australia... My guess is that a large majority of these kids that are getting the wrong impression about the Navy have never been or will possibly never get the chance to visit 2/3's of the countries that he has visited. Or maybe I am getting crotchety!! Lol....
Finally... I have looked at so many Aircraft Carrier videos but all they ever show you is the flight deck. I have always wondered what it's like to live on an Aircraft Carrier. Thanks... keep it up. From a Vietnam vet.

I was maybe an hour or two away from shipping off to Great Lakes, Illinois, back in '90. Was told at the last minute that due to my taking Prozac I wouldn't be able to go. Looking back.....probably the best thing that ever happened to me. I was simply not prepared for boot camp. I have so much respect for the sailors that went ahead and are now representing us.

fold your uniform the way you would iron it... put it under your matress and sleep on with it under the matress.. saves space and time dont have to iron... also you dont need that many bags.... your sea bag should be more then enough..... all you need is your uniforms and 1 pair of going out clothes.. ( your on a ship 24/7) tops 2 pairs of going out clothes... and then 2 pairs of sweats and the rest tees and skivies

I was thinking the subs would have that much space. Being that this is a carrier...I know you've got to be cramped in a sub. I think I'd be claustrophobic living there for however many months or years you're at sea.

I myself when I was on board an aircraft carrier USS America cv-66 from 75 to 79 I only had two sets of civilian clothes and the rest of was Navy issued... Pack Light .....
TheOgSwigs 9000. Do it, serve our country and see the world and you'll know how lucky we are to be an American. I served aboard a tin can and saw more than 100 countries in just 4 yrs. And the food is pretty good. It's hard work and some days you wish you weren't there but you will not regret it. Remember this, Its an honor to serve and not everybody has an honorable discharge.
I spent 36 months on a USN Cruiser (CG-32). I am 6'3 and even though I was an E-5 (CTR2) I was entitled to a middle rack due to seniority but I stayed in the top rack the entire time cause I was tall enough to see into my storage area. And we ALL had stand up lockers too. It was cool. That was in 83-86 and I still talk to my shipmates to this day. United States Navy is where its at.
We had 15 racks(5X3)on CV-60 ‘74-‘77. We had 9 men sleeping in a berthing space with the 15 racks because we were under-manned. The berthing space was approximately 15’X20’ in an L shape around the escape trunk for 4 Main Machinery Space. E-4 and above had the little wall lockers plus the rack lockers. There was also a large floor locker you could store your deck jackets and foul weather gear in. The racks looked just like in this video with the blue fire resistant curtains. All the racks had a little reading light, and the top racks had vents for the chilled water coolers. Great in summer, terrible in winter because there was no heat. We inherited this berthing space and rehabbed it ourselves so it wasn’t as spiffy as the berthing space shown on this video, but it wasn’t bad. Some of the best times of my life with some of the best men I’ve ever known in some of the most exotic liberty ports you can imagine and the adrenaline rush of life on a carrier at the center of every major event. (Also the first time in my life I had any spending money) I’d do it all again in an instant, especially being young and healthy again!
It's not too far off from 30 years ago on a tin can. Enjoyed the video shipmate!. We ALWAYS had too much stuff. One sailor in our berthing, kept his coffin locker FULL of food. We called him SAFEWAY, after the grocery store. Be safe out there. Continue the adventure.

Suffocated, not really the right word when your actually there. I thought I wouldn't wake up one day, my berth was on the 02 level under CAT1. The smell of jp5, exhaust and stench from dirty laundry everywhere will knock you out cold.

Dude, I spent 12 years on carriers. As an AO, IYAOYAS. Was best time ever. 2 world cruises and once around the horn. And numerous times to Australia. So those cramped spaces are worth it. I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Retired after 20.

First of all your life while on ship to serve. All you need is one set of issued sheets, your full uniforms, which will fit in those spaces, and hygiene, with one or two sets of civilian clothes. Ditch the rest. It is a ship and not home back on the block.
Alot of junior enlisted get kicked out of their barracks when they deploy, and then they cant let their shit go. My rack was Never that packed good lord that kid has alot of stuff.
I'm neither American nor have I ever been on such a ship but I totally agree: He has too much stuff! I'd only pack like a third of what he has - and I'm a woman 😂
When we first arrive at the ship we don’t immediately get assigned a barracks. We live on board for a good while. So yeah, the ship ends up being our home. 🙄
+Traveling with Jose on the submarine we have to share one of those racks (which are smaller) with another person and we have a small footlocker (that we also have to share). Count your blessings and smooth sailing.
I’ve wanted to join the navy soooo freaking bad. But because of my cognitive and intellectual disabilities I’m unable to. It sucks but I guess I just have to accept it. But watching vids like this from sailors makes me kinda feel like I’m there. Thanks for making these vids !
I’m a Seabee and never get stationed on ships. I got to tour this ship back in 2017 while I was at Yokosuka. What a different experience it is. That ship is massive.

Really enjoyed this! I'm from the UK and remember going on-board my dad's ship, on a family day, when he was in the Royal Navy, and he showed me his sleeping quarters, and how small they were! But most importantly, even though it was family day, he checked first to make sure we were not going to disturb any of his crew-mates, who might actually still be on duty, before showing us! Happy days!
Big respect to you dude. I’m a Seabee and when I leave for deployment we get two rollers and a carry on plus our cbr bag. One bag is for my combat gear and my smaller roller is for my personal I don’t bring or acquire much stuff but then again I have a house back where I’m stationed or I put my stuff in storage. But you dude figured out how to do all that. In that little ass space. When I sleep on cots which I do for training and for deployment it was me and 30 other females in an Alaska tent I basically just put my cot over top my rollers and used my cbr as a night stand and my personal as a pillow. It was a rough deployment but I loved it and worked myself hard each day and slept like a baby. But y’all fleeters are wild n I give you props cause I would never join for y’all’s rates I joined knowing good and well if I wasn’t a Seabee then I wasn’t going Navy. I enjoyed this video! It gives a deep perspective what how little y’all have while on ship. ESP if you live there. I love my brothers and sisters but not enough to have 6 people in a broom closet space 😂
Being a sailor aboard the USS Saratoga CVA 60 many years ago. Our sleeping compartment was similar but we didn't have civilian clothes and nothing was hanging out as was in your compartment has stuff all over the place. We didn't have "supervisors" we had Petty officers and seaman.
I was on the Catapult crew, to me if I was able to return to my rack at night it was paradise, I had a top rack with an A/C unit blowing on me, in hot humid climates that vent was a must have.
USN early 60"s, Used to send most of my stuff home just before deployment. Took leave upon return and picked up things I needed. Had less space back then when a WWII tincan was made for war not for crew comfort.
For rea. I was in the Coast Guard. On my cutter, I had my N.E.S. hooked to a sixty inch projection television in one of the storekeepers areas. Used to play with some of the guys after we would get off at night.
As long as the hair cut adhere to the standard then unless the NCOs are being a huge Richard and make you shaved your head then you can do whatever you want as long as you follow the standard set out. For example, you have to follow the AR670-1 if you are in the Army for standard grooming (You can have beard now and even dye your hair as long as your commanders and NCOs allow it).

Way to many bags. If the Navy didn't issue it then you don't need it lol. I was on the GW CVN 73. I only brought my sea bag. I fit my civilian clothes in it also. Got out of the Navy and helped build the reactor on CVN-76 nice ship. I also built a few sub reactors.

Jose , I was air wing VA-147 from 1976 to 1980 my carrier was the Constellation CV-64 , and I got to say you are living at the Hilton ! Compared to my living quarters on the Connie as we called it, the head had toilets ten or more in a row spaced two to three feet apart with no dividers , berthing compartments were worse than prison, feather mattress and pillows and wool blankets, don’t get me wrong I wouldn’t trade my in time in the Navy for anything, oh the sea stories I could tell lol, spent my last 7months stationed in the PI Cubi point, been out for almost 40yrs now and still think about it every day, so this old sailor says cherish your time in the navy and enjoy, new to your channel and it blows my mind how far the navy has come, take care and keep your head on a swevel and the eyes in the back of your head open when your top side on the flight deck. GO NAVY!

At your age, you should practice temperance and become a minimalist. Do not become a slave to your possessions. Freedom is having nothing to lose. Build your savings account because one day you are going to have an opportunity to go in business for yourself which will set you above the crowd. I think you are wised not getting inked up. You never know what the future holds so keep the slate clean.
Great advice. I was in the USMC, never got a tattoo, if a tattoo is so important to someone and not an impulse or trying to fit in then its worth waiting for. 30 years later, still no tattoos for me, to each his own.
Tell you what shipmate. You have it much better than I did when I was stationed in VF-151 (now VFA-151). I was on the USS Midway during the cold war and the conditions onboard were pretty rough. The Midway turned 40 years old when I was onboard, so you can imagine what that was like.

The good thing about the Navy is getting to see a lot more than other branches get to see. If I could do it over again then I'd probably have gone Navy.
Spent my time in (55-59) and the enlisted man's credo probably still holds, "If you ain't bitching, you ain't happy." The grinder was outside and the firing range was an actual firing range off base. The M1 and the .45 were the weapons back then.
USN RETIRED. 1983 - 2003. You only get so much space. Use it wisely. Think outside of the box. When I was in a 90 man berthing, we did not have "dead storage". Mail excess stuff home or keep it off ship. I broke down a large cardboard box and stored box under mattress. Seabag folded and put under mattress without making lumps.. Whites and blues hung up in stand up locker. Dress shoes, dress socks inside dress shoes, white hats in the botton. Handwashed PT gear. I made a holder out of tape and heavy cardboard for my boots and one folded uniform at the foot of my rack. Easy access for drills, man overboard, etc. (I always worked nights on the boat). I made a set of "blackout" curtains with storage pockets. You have too many civies. When I was in, it could be an ass beating if you walked into a berthing that was not yours unescorted, at the very least, questioned and chased out of there. Berthings still look the same, except some racks had "non-politically" correct posters (centerfolds). Occasionally we would trice someone up in thier rack. Lift rack up with them in it and put the hold up bar in place.
I think a lot depends on your First Enlistment and other factors. Age, Majority Level, Single or Married, etc. The Military can be a fantastic experience or it can be the worst few years of your life. I think a lot about everything from what if I had joined a different branch, to what if I stayed in and did 20 or more. Just looking at those living arrangements would be enough to discourage me. Some people are just the “Military Type” others March to a different drummer and could never live that close to other people . Not saying it can’t be a great life. Travel, Steady Paychecks, Benefits. It’s just not for everyone. To those of you that enjoy it, I wish you well and thank you for your service and dedication to America. The fact that so many people volunteer means that people who don’t want to serve, don’t have to. It can be a very good life. Just not for everyone.

And the dude said he wasn't in an apartment anymore, means he stored most of his sh** in a store locker on base and is probably carrying only his clothes. If you store clothes in a non air conditioned room they'll get moldy within weeks. Deploying for months up to a year your sh** def have to be thrown away when you get back. Holy shit dude! I was in the Navy and served on a DDG and CG back in the early 70's and didn't have any more space then you have. I can't imagine toting that much crap around. Are you a boot or what?
Buy five expensive shirts. And pants. Five designers socks. Under gourmets. And two bottles of expensive cologne. And be fresh at every port. Also five top brand shoes two dress and sneakers. That's what I did. And they called me superfly. Did 25 years.
Luxury living if you ask me, I served 69-73 on a ship built in 1944. We were only allowed to bring one sea bag of clothes and essentials like soap, toothpaste. We had just one locker and it was maybe 1/3 the size of one of those lockers. All of our clothes and essentials had to fit in there. Later on we got bunk lockers.
I plan on joining the Marines. No harsh feelings to my fellow neighbors in the Navy were all doing it for one cause and it's for our country. Thank you for your service and I love your TH-cam.

I was on the USS America (CV-66) and we had the same amount of space as you. We were in a 99 man berthing compartment for an air wing squadron. This was 1981.

Should have been on the Intrepid, on board 1968, had canvas racks, thin mattress and a fart sack covering the mattress. No ac in the compartment. Had small metal lockers that didn't hold much. Was on a WestPac cruise in the summer. Was a line crew leading petty officer. Was a great cruise, long hours dirty work. Would do it all over again.
Why do you bring so much for a ride? I had two bags I took on cruise. One full of uniforms "full seabag" and the other w street clothes and flight deck gear. I was attached to the kitty hawk before it was decommissioned. IYAOYAS
As a follow up on my comments. I am happy that I sacrificed for my country and did my duty. There is nothing more beautiful than seeing the full moon at sea when flight ops are not going on and you feel the breeze on an exposed weather deck especially if the carrier is going ahead flank trying to get across the Pacific. I didn't know what I wanted to do when I got out of high school but the Navy allowed me to see foreign countries that really do have abject poverty. There is no safety net. I would encourage others to do the same but for me College called after 6 years. It really gives you an appreciation for the USA when you come back. Always loved sailing under the Golden Gate Bridge after a West Pac. Sadly, the Alameda NAS is closed. Went and did fire fighting at Treasure Island in 1989 maybe. was crazy but taught me just how hot a fire on a ship can be. Did it with OBA's and without. good experience.
I'm on an aircraft carrier, you may need all that stuff for your job but God damn you have a lot of stuff my dude. Cams in locker, everything military and shower wise in locker, civies in one bag ready for leave and ceremonials hanging, boom done. Air craft carriers are pretty spacious compared to frigates. I had a Top Bunk and a small locker for all my gear on HMNZS Taranaki, 1973/76.a NZ Frigate there were 7 other P/O's sharing the space,NONE of us carried all that civvy gear and stuff, only Uniforms, Footwear and maybe a camera,a book and a single change of civvy gear and shoes. No need for all the 'Shoreside gear,you have a HUGE space on your ship Buddy.
My step dad was in a navy for 15 years, he's 6'5 and he had plenty of room when he was on a carrier. No one fucked with him because his mom was a commander and his dad was a Captain in the navy..they were also navy doctors. Commander Gibbs, Captain Gibbs

Traveling with Jose I saw once in a rack somebody put Velcro above them on the rack inside and Velcro on the backs of there cell so they could watch videos in there rack without holding there phone. there's crazy tricks people come up with for little space they got lmao aw man yep, it's like a high school you can't leave. it got better after deployment though. i always wondered if it was like that on other boats. I only did 4 years n got out in Nov 2016 n got in the Active Reserves and it's a whole other world.

A few comments: Jose needs a haircut and trim. Travel lighter, store some stuff on a locker off the ship. Stop complaining, Japan is a great tour of duty. I was based in Yokusuka for two years on USS Blue Ridge.

I retired in 2012 but it seems to me that the entire purpose of uniform and grooming standards are the looks. I'm not saying anything against this young man. It seems clear he isn't on duty. I just say this, lot of old Navy guys here critiquing Jose, his haircut, his attitude, etc. This is a Millennial in today’s Navy people, the world changes. Is it much different from when I was in Yokuska serving on the USS Midway 1985? not really. Few more modern conveniences today, perhaps a bit more lenient on regulations, they have women onboard, but still pretty much the same. In fact, those berthing areas and heads are exactly the same from the modern USS Reagan to the long retired WWII era USS Midway I served on, right down to the color of the floor tiles and rack curtains. I’m sure a 1960 sailor would have done the same trash talking about me had he seen the 1985 Navy, and in 2055 Jose is going to look at a current video of the Navy and think those “kids” have it so easy! And one more thing, I hated living on the ship in 1985 too, but I’d go back now in a heartbeat if I could, some of the best years of my life. Jose will feel the same way in 35 years, all the BS will be gone from memory, but the good times and nostalgic feeling will remain. Enjoy it Jose, because it really is an experience you will treasure the rest of your life. Ignore the haters, you’re the one serving our country and we all owe you our gratitude for that!
Hi Rich. I too was on the Midway from 1983-1986. I was in VF-151. I agree completely with what you said. I am proud of the 6 years i spent in the Navy and would do it again in a heartbeat if they asked me to. Some of the best times of my life were while in the Navy. Starting with 2 years shore duty at Cubi Point in the PI didn't hurt either...LOL. Hope you and your family are doing well during this Covid-19 thing. Take care shipmate!
Brad Schroder I was ships company, AIMD. I always felt so fortunate to be on the last ship with active F-4 Squadrons, still the coolest naval aircraft ever! I also spent 6 months in Cubi, sent TAD with a Chief, 1st class, and another 3rd class like me during Midway’s dry dock. Boy did we live the highlife working 3 hours a day shuffling parts that were sent to Cubi for I-level repair while our shipmates were back in Yoko living in the WWII era Gaffney barracks ship and chipping paint all day! We never felt bad about that for one second!
Since you've put it the way you've done, I could overlook some things. Generational change is something that many struggle with. Our Navy was a long time ago. USS Independence CV-62 Ops, OI Div. 1984 to 1986. This young man has a whole life ahead of him. When you consider the enormous amount of Debt, I don't think my generation left a better world for this generation. These young people and those who are about to be born; they're going to face a very different set of challenges then we'll ever know. I suppose we could just try to give them whatever support we can.
Rich... I guess my issue is that he is highlighting one small aspect of the Navy and mixing a couple of "it's ok" comments in with the rest of the negative. He's living on a ship in Japan! It amuses me that all of these "I could never be in the Navy if that's what its like" or "Screw that, I'm joining the Air Force instead" comments are people that don't realize he is living in Japan and when he deploys (or deployed, I guess this is a few years old now) he was most likely able to pull into multiple countries in Asia, the Middle East, possibly Africa, and possibly Australia... My guess is that a large majority of these kids that are getting the wrong impression about the Navy have never been or will possibly never get the chance to visit 2/3's of the countries that he has visited. Or maybe I am getting crotchety!! Lol....

fold your uniform the way you would iron it... put it under your matress and sleep on with it under the matress.. saves space and time dont have to iron... also you dont need that many bags.... your sea bag should be more then enough..... all you need is your uniforms and 1 pair of going out clothes.. ( your on a ship 24/7) tops 2 pairs of going out clothes... and then 2 pairs of sweats and the rest tees and skivies

And the food is pretty good. It's hard work and some days you wish you weren't there but you will not regret it. Remember this, Its an honor to serve and not everybody has an honorable discharge.

I spent 36 months on a USN Cruiser (CG-32). I am 6'3 and even though I was an E-5 (CTR2) I was entitled to a middle rack due to seniority but I stayed in the top rack the entire time cause I was tall enough to see into my storage area. And we ALL had stand up lockers too. It was cool. That was in 83-86 and I still talk to my shipmates to this day. United States Navy is where its at.

We had 15 racks(5X3)on CV-60 ‘74-‘77. We had 9 men sleeping in a berthing space with the 15 racks because we were under-manned. The berthing space was approximately 15’X20’ in an L shape around the escape trunk for 4 Main Machinery Space. E-4 and above had the little wall lockers plus the rack lockers. There was also a large floor locker you could store your deck jackets and foul weather gear in. The racks looked just like in this video with the blue fire resistant curtains. All the racks had a little reading light, and the top racks had vents for the chilled water coolers. Great in summer, terrible in winter because there was no heat. We inherited this berthing space and rehabbed it ourselves so it wasn’t as spiffy as the berthing space shown on this video, but it wasn’t bad. Some of the best times of my life with some of the best men I’ve ever known in some of the most exotic liberty ports you can imagine and the adrenaline rush of life on a carrier at the center of every major event. (Also the first time in my life I had any spending money) I’d do it all again in an instant, especially being young and healthy again!
It's not too far off from 30 years ago on a tin can. Enjoyed the video shipmate!. We ALWAYS had too much stuff. One sailor in our berthing, kept his coffin locker FULL of food. We called him SAFEWAY, after the grocery store. Be safe out there. Continue the adventure.

Dude, I spent 12 years on carriers. As an AO, IYAOYAS. Was best time ever. 2 world cruises and once around the horn. And numerous times to Australia. So those cramped spaces are worth it. I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Retired after 20.

First of all your life while on ship to serve. All you need is one set of issued sheets, your full uniforms, which will fit in those spaces, and hygiene, with one or two sets of civilian clothes. Ditch the rest. It is a ship and not home back on the block.
Alot of junior enlisted get kicked out of their barracks when they deploy, and then they cant let their shit go. My rack was Never that packed good lord that kid has alot of stuff.
I'm neither American nor have I ever been on such a ship but I totally agree: He has too much stuff! I'd only pack like a third of what he has - and I'm a woman 😂

Really enjoyed this! I'm from the UK and remember going on-board my dad's ship, on a family day, when he was in the Royal Navy, and he showed me his sleeping quarters, and how small they were! But most importantly, even though it was family day, he checked first to make sure we were not going to disturb any of his crew-mates, who might actually still be on duty, before showing us! Happy days!

Big respect to you dude. I’m a Seabee and when I leave for deployment we get two rollers and a carry on plus our cbr bag. One bag is for my combat gear and my smaller roller is for my personal I don’t bring or acquire much stuff but then again I have a house back where I’m stationed or I put my stuff in storage. But you dude figured out how to do all that. In that little ass space. When I sleep on cots which I do for training and for deployment it was me and 30 other females in an Alaska tent I basically just put my cot over top my rollers and used my cbr as a night stand and my personal as a pillow. It was a rough deployment but I loved it and worked myself hard each day and slept like a baby. But y’all fleeters are wild n I give you props cause I would never join for y’all’s rates I joined knowing good and well if I wasn’t a Seabee then I wasn’t going Navy. I enjoyed this video! It gives a deep perspective what how little y’all have while on ship. ESP if you live there. I love my brothers and sisters but not enough to have 6 people in a broom closet space 😂

Being a sailor aboard the USS Saratoga CVA 60 many years ago. Our sleeping compartment was similar but we didn't have civilian clothes and nothing was hanging out as was in your compartment has stuff all over the place. We didn't have "supervisors" we had Petty officers and seaman.

I was on the Catapult crew, to me if I was able to return to my rack at night it was paradise, I had a top rack with an A/C unit blowing on me, in hot humid climates that vent was a must have.

USN early 60"s, Used to send most of my stuff home just before deployment. Took leave upon return and picked up things I needed. Had less space back then when a WWII tincan was made for war not for crew comfort.

As long as the hair cut adhere to the standard then unless the NCOs are being a huge Richard and make you shaved your head then you can do whatever you want as long as you follow the standard set out. For example, you have to follow the AR670-1 if you are in the Army for standard grooming (You can have beard now and even dye your hair as long as your commanders and NCOs allow it).

Jose , I was air wing VA-147 from 1976 to 1980 my carrier was the Constellation CV-64 , and I got to say you are living at the Hilton ! Compared to my living quarters on the Connie as we called it, the head had toilets ten or more in a row spaced two to three feet apart with no dividers , berthing compartments were worse than prison, feather mattress and pillows and wool blankets, don’t get me wrong I wouldn’t trade my in time in the Navy for anything, oh the sea stories I could tell lol, spent my last 7months stationed in the PI Cubi point, been out for almost 40yrs now and still think about it every day, so this old sailor says cherish your time in the navy and enjoy, new to your channel and it blows my mind how far the navy has come, take care and keep your head on a swevel and the eyes in the back of your head open when your top side on the flight deck. GO NAVY!

Tell you what shipmate. You have it much better than I did when I was stationed in VF-151 (now VFA-151). I was on the USS Midway during the cold war and the conditions onboard were pretty rough. The Midway turned 40 years old when I was onboard, so you can imagine what that was like.

The good thing about the Navy is getting to see a lot more than other branches get to see. If I could do it over again then I'd probably have gone Navy.

USN RETIRED. 1983 - 2003. You only get so much space. Use it wisely. Think outside of the box. When I was in a 90 man berthing, we did not have "dead storage". Mail excess stuff home or keep it off ship. I broke down a large cardboard box and stored box under mattress. Seabag folded and put under mattress without making lumps.. Whites and blues hung up in stand up locker. Dress shoes, dress socks inside dress shoes, white hats in the botton. Handwashed PT gear. I made a holder out of tape and heavy cardboard for my boots and one folded uniform at the foot of my rack. Easy access for drills, man overboard, etc. (I always worked nights on the boat). I made a set of "blackout" curtains with storage pockets. You have too many civies. When I was in, it could be an ass beating if you walked into a berthing that was not yours unescorted, at the very least, questioned and chased out of there. Berthings still look the same, except some racks had "non-politically" correct posters (centerfolds). Occasionally we would trice someone up in thier rack. Lift rack up with them in it and put the hold up bar in place.
I guess “traveling light” is not a common practice in the navy lol

I think a lot depends on your First Enlistment and other factors. Age, Majority Level, Single or Married, etc. The Military can be a fantastic experience or it can be the worst few years of your life. I think a lot about everything from what if I had joined a different branch, to what if I stayed in and did 20 or more. Just looking at those living arrangements would be enough to discourage me. Some people are just the “Military Type” others March to a different drummer and could never live that close to other people . Not saying it can’t be a great life. Travel, Steady Paychecks, Benefits. It’s just not for everyone. To those of you that enjoy it, I wish you well and thank you for your service and dedication to America. The fact that so many people volunteer means that people who don’t want to serve, don’t have to. It can be a very good life. Just not for everyone.

These floating cities are amazing. I wanted to serve on an aircraft carrier when I was young but I just wasn't in good enough shape to join. This is the next best thing. I subbed channel. Thank you for staying that. I guess some people don't get that. And the dude said he wasn't in an apartment anymore, means he stored most of his sh** in a store locker on base and is probably carrying only his clothes. If you store clothes in a non air conditioned room they'll get moldy within weeks. Deploying for months up to a year your sh** def have to be thrown away when you get back. Luxury living if you ask me, I served 69-73 on a ship built in 1944. We were only allowed to bring one sea bag of clothes and essentials like soap, toothpaste. We had just one locker and it was maybe 1/3 the size of one of those lockers. All of our clothes and essentials had to fit in there. Later on we got bunk lockers.
I plan on joining the Marines. No harsh feelings to my fellow neighbors in the Navy were all doing it for one cause and it's for our country. Thank you for your service and I love your TH-cam.

I was on the USS America (CV-66) and we had the same amount of space as you. We were in a 99 man berthing compartment for an air wing squadron. This was 1981.

Should have been on the Intrepid, on board 1968, had canvas racks, thin mattress and a fart sack covering the mattress. No ac in the compartment. Had small metal lockers that didn't hold much. Was on a WestPac cruise in the summer. Was a line crew leading petty officer. Was a great cruise, long hours dirty work. Would do it all over again.
Cherish that short time you have in the Navy, you'll be glad to tell stories about it in the future, Trust me, been there, done that.
Why do you bring so much for a ride? I had two bags I took on cruise. One full of uniforms "full seabag" and the other w street clothes and flight deck gear. I was attached to the kitty hawk before it was decommissioned. IYAOYAS

As a follow up on my comments. I am happy that I sacrificed for my country and did my duty. There is nothing more beautiful than seeing the full moon at sea when flight ops are not going on and you feel the breeze on an exposed weather deck especially if the carrier is going ahead flank trying to get across the Pacific. I didn't know what I wanted to do when I got out of high school but the Navy allowed me to see foreign countries that really do have abject poverty. There is no safety net. I would encourage others to do the same but for me College called after 6 years. It really gives you an appreciation for the USA when you come back. Always loved sailing under the Golden Gate Bridge after a West Pac. Sadly, the Alameda NAS is closed. Went and did fire fighting at Treasure Island in 1989 maybe. was crazy but taught me just how hot a fire on a ship can be. Did it with OBA's and without. good experience.

Cams in locker, everything military and shower wise in locker, civies in one bag ready for leave and ceremonials hanging, boom done. Air craft carriers are pretty spacious compared to frigates. I had a Top Bunk and a small locker for all my gear on HMNZS Taranaki, 1973/76.a NZ Frigate there were 7 other P/O's sharing the space,NONE of us carried all that civvy gear and stuff, only Uniforms, Footwear and maybe a camera,a book and a single change of civvy gear and shoes. No need for all the 'Shoreside gear,you have a HUGE space on your ship Buddy.
My step dad was in a navy for 15 years, he's 6'5 and he had plenty of room when he was on a carrier. No one fucked with him because his mom was a commander and his dad was a Captain in the navy..they were also navy doctors. Commander Gibbs, Captain Gibbs

Traveling with Jose I saw once in a rack somebody put Velcro above them on the rack inside and Velcro on the backs of there cell so they could watch videos in there rack without holding there phone. there's crazy tricks people come up with for little space they got lmao aw man yep, it's like a high school you can't leave. it got better after deployment though. i always wondered if it was like that on other boats. I only did 4 years n got out in Nov 2016 n got in the Active Reserves and it's a whole other world.
That berthing looks pretty damned good considering how many times I slept in the rain, mud, snow, etc. in the Army.
