    Stoker's use of the female gender in this novel is so nuanced. On one hand he clearly communicates the friendship of Lucy and Mina and develops two solid characters. Mina turns out to be a major force in the conclusion of the novel and Lucy, although promiscuous and less moral than Lucy (1890's standards) deserves the readers sympathy. Having said that, the majority of the vampires in this tale are women driven by blood lust.

      It's incredible how complex his female characters are given the time. Many men would have not been able to even imagine this, let alone write them in such a compelling and nuanced way. I'm always happy to hear your take on this, and looking forward to the discussion in part 3 x
