    I sold this game a year ago (after two plays) and felt that in the multiplayer game everyone struggled very hard with the tactical nature of the game. The second game was a solo attempt but Wakhan was just a pain in the butt really to manage the rulebook simply didn't answer very basic questions. If you check out BGG the number of people confused with rules is staggering. HOWEVER, after selling it I kept thinking about it. Long story short...I bought it again this month and even added coins. Wakhan...I'm coming. I feel I understood what I got hung up with and although I'm still not sure if I will ever love it (I prefer strategy over tactical play ) but the production is nothing short of amazing and sometimes you just want a sophisticated skirmish game!

      @ThinkerThemer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha! I love that you went full circle on it. I agree completely regarding the rulebook, it is oversimplified a little too much... we landed on forums more than a few times for clarification. It's great as a two player if you haven't tried already but it did take quite a few games to shift into a tactical, flexible mindset. I (Amy) didn't like it to begin with and then like you I just couldn't stop thinking about it and now I feel addicted.... 😅 we are yet to try Wakhan...let us know how you go with attempt 2...

    Pax Pamir 2 is one of my very favourite games. Once I learned how this game & hence Pax games work (changing winning conditions & the card market mechanism) along with the tie-in to a well researched history (or future paradigm in the case of Transhumanity), it is a series of games that add an extra dimension over most other games. Definitely not a gateway game, and whilst they range from relatively accessible mechanics to quite complicated, they provide a real challenge whilst immersing you in the theme. These are great games for 'Thinkers & Themers'.

      Yesss thank you Steve! We are so happy to have discovered Pax Pamir 2 and look forward to trying more in the series. We're not really history buffs either yet you can't help but learn along the way. Very clever games. Thank you for commenting! ☺

    Wow! I have 1st ed Pax Pamir, and I just backed John Company 2nd ed - and now I am considering adding a copy of Pax Pamir 2nd ed onto that. (-$$$$) But I do enjoy several of the Pax series games (and I am still getting the flavour of some as well): Pax Porfiriana, Pax Transhumanity, Pax Emancipation and especially Pax Renaissance. Sierra Madre games are another animal, in terms of thoughtful design, in terms of careful implementation, in terms of DEPTH, and Cole Wehrle has done a wonderful job, both in implementing a non-Eklund Pax game with Pax Pamir, and in his wonderful designs since then. I am definitely tempted now.

    Pax Pamir is a wonderfully brutal design. It is probably my favourite Pax, partly because I like what Cole Wehrle’s games are trying to convey more so than the Eklund’s, although Pax Ren is also an amazing design. Nice review :-) ... but ...
    "I don't like conflict" - praise for Root, waxes poetic about how great Pax Pamir is, has Rising Sun standing right behind Pax Pamir. ;-)
    IMHO conflict is crucial for good games. Conflict means player interaction. Games without conflict are just multi-player solitaire.

    Great review! I have had this game on my wishlist since the first edition but I was not sure if I would enjoy it. It seemed too complicated and I wasn’t sure if anyone would want to play it with me. But the way both of you describe this game makes me want to bump it up to the top of my wishlist. Bone broth soup and an onion...love it (chef’s kiss) LOL!!
    I love strategy and theme so this game should be up my ally. I’m an omnigamer so I like and can appreciate a lot of different style of games. I guess I play games based on my mood. But my SO only likes certain types of games must be competitive and must play less than an hour. I’m hoping PAX Pamir will hit that sweet spot. But I’m a little worried about the teach.
    BTW...great review on Obsession I just purchased everything because of your review. I hope you two do a play through of the Obsession soon! Keep up the good work. Enjoying all your content. Super excited for women to be representing my favorite hobby!!

      Thanks Sarah!! The rules overhead on this one is surprisingly not as complex as it looks. The rulebook is a bit oversimplified - some of the nuance we had to find on forums BUT I would say that once you know it it would be a fairly easy teach. It's mostly just play or activate a card, take that action. If your SO likes direct competition this is a really great option. I cant wait to play it at a higher player count as I imagine how chaotic that would be with the changing alliances....

      It sounds like you might have heavy taste? The nicest components we came across last year was for Honey Buzz but it is more midweight and at two the worker placement is not as tight but if you care more about the puzzle that is less important. Maggie very much enjoys scythe which has deluxe components that you can add and minis is the base game to paint (low player interaction game). Sorry this is difficult because some of our favourite 2 player games don't have the BEST components. Snowdonia deluxe box plays well at all counts and I would say midweight but very tightly competitive. Nusfjord is one of our favourite easier to set up euros for 2 players that is very satisfying when you win. I'd immediately get either one of the expansions which give you the gold metal coins. Hope that helps!! 😊

    So I finally got to play this for my birthday last weekend. I had high hopes and I can't really find blame with the game but I have to admit I wasn't blown away with the first experience. Maybe we were all too tired already. One thing I'm afraid of is that I might just not like the design-choices where it's impossible to build anything that's going to last in this game. Anything you do and own can be taken away in the blink of an eye. I'm sure it's intentional to reflect the spirit of the times and make the experience more immersive but it made me realise I do love ramping up in powerlevel along with the other players over the course of the game and Pax Pamir doesn't seem to have that element - or did we play it wrong? Hopefully we'll get it to the table again in a more well-rested state to confirm or debunk these first impressions.

    • @ThinkerThemer
      @ThinkerThemer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No it definitely sounds like you are playing it correctly. That was what was so new and intriguing to us, that it is so highly tactical rather than strategic in the sense of what we are used to (longer term planning). Of course it will not be for everyone, but if it helps neither of us really liked it for our first couple of plays until we realised how to leverage timing in the game and manipulate the end game scoring. If you're on the same alliance but someone is beating you with influence, swap colours and ensure they don't win the majority condition. Or if your alliance is suffering swap to theirs and win with influence. Once we both realised how to do that it became deeply strategic and difficult. How many did you play with?
      And by the way, wishing you a very happy belated birthday. 💕

    Such an intricate and strategic game, done well with gorgeous components (resin blocks), feel for historic events, 'original' art from that period. The whole 'pax' thinking and playing was a big step for me. But man, do I love this game. An outstanding board game that stands out with it's design and components. Switching allegiances is great, but can come at a great cost (if your court has been been build to such an extent with the right suits). Economic wise, the market is pretty tight, which makes it not easy to always acquire the wished cards. Theme wise from Maggie's point of view, bone broth is nice, but I see it as an ossobuco (by the lack of an Afghan dish). And on an end note, having those metal afghan coins with your game, will make it a whole point better ;-)

      @@ThinkerThemer I like complex strategy games. From Stonemaier games I have only got my hands on Scythe, Charterstone and Wingspan but I'm inclined towards Viticulture too. I would love to see you guys talk about it. Love your perspectives.
      Brass Birmingham so far is the heaviest strategy games I have played so far so I'm not sure if I want to go even heavier with "Endless Winter" so I'm still thinking if I should back that or not.

      Sounds like your taste is very in line with ours! We should definitely review Viticulture, although I think many people already know how we feel about it... 🥰 Brass is quite heavy! I'm not sure if Endless Winter would be heavier. Perhaps more options to think about....? This one (Pax Pamir) is actually fairly simple in its mechanics, it is just a bit challenging to initially work out / see the strategy until you play it more and more...

And reminded me of Root in some ways, on closer inspection I realised it was developed by the Root guys which I didn't know - I just wondered if you love this game so much, is there a reason you haven't explored Root, as it was pretty much 2018 game of the year for many.

    Watching this a second time because it's back on ks and I'm yet again considering it. I'm sad I missed it last year but at the same time I'm still not sure it will see play gah choices choices. is it still hitting your table?

    • @ThinkerThemer
      @ThinkerThemer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Aaron! Well... to be honest it hasn't recently but that's mostly because we are always playing things to review. It is a beautiful and clever game and despite the theme not being "usual" for us we love it and will keep it in our collection . It is not like anything else we own (maybe closest to Oath but the learning curve for Oath is much greater!) It is very tactical instead of strategic, maybe like a game of chess if you have no opening moves etc planned (I don't lol). The theme means we are selective with who we play it with as we have a lot of casual gamers in our life who really look to theme first to draw them in.
      Sorry, I feel that was not that helpful 🙃

    • @AaronAndSusie
      @AaronAndSusie 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ThinkerThemer haha well I appreciate it either way. I saw on the ks there was a print and play so I was able to read the rules and tried it on tts against the automa. It's totally up my alley but I don't see anyone who would play it with me so after about 3 hours between the learn and game I ultimately passed on the KS. If I see it on a convention schedule I'll definitely play it. Johns Company looks interesting too but again, I wouldn't have anyone to play it with!
