G.I Joe had a lot of characters and vehicles as well as two different story-lines : The Comics and the Cartoon show. Why wasn't that enough for Hollywood to work with when they made the live action movie?!??!?!?!
My friend Paul, and, I already did all the "will it fly" experimentation out of his 2nd floor window in the summer of '86. The Rattler shares aerodynamic qualities with a brick.
As do many jets at such low airspeed. You need a true power plant to provide enough thrust for the rattler's aerodynamic qualities to be effective. Replace the plastic engines with model rocket engines of approx. the same diameter. While you're at it, include the rocket parachutes... That may be the only way you'll find it afterward.
Great review and video of a truly great toy from our childhood! I never had one, but my friend did, and once in a while he would bring it out to play with while we were out in his backyard! Good times! Thanks for sharing!
I really wanted this as a kid, i ended up getting the tiger striped g.i. joe version airplane that looked very similar but wasn't the same a few years later
Great review man! Loved this aircraft. It was one of the best for creative looks and creative play as a kid! The comics gave some life to this beast in the sky striker versus rattler edition. Classic. Thanks for the review man!
Easily a top 10 vehicle...and in my book...prolly within the top five. Only cobra vehicle that outshines this in my book is the Raven. Everything about this is great. color, design, armament, and driver....its all nothing but win here. While the landing gear is a major weakness i never noticed that as a kid (my cuz and friends had this..i never did). prolly my ONLY suggested change is that the gunner cockpit should have had a more "futuristic/sci fi" laser arrangement, compact Air to Air missile arrangement. or maybe even some sort of missile counter measure. As a kid a gunner's cockpit is too much of a throwback (tho as an adult i can appreciate the nods to WWII era bombers even more). i also LOVED the winged cobra symbol. Its things like this vehicle that made G.I.Joe such an awesome toy as a kid. The perfect marriage of real world hardware and our young imaginations...and it has the signature quality that i loved as a kid; this was no defensive "hold-area" type craft that would make little sense for cobra to field. This was a plain and simple death threat. When other toys/figures saw a squadron of these in formation they knew the deal!!! This was a unforgivably destructive, dispassionate UNLOAD AND FORGET, machine of war. Death itself given wings (tho somehow as a kid..all my fav joes like snake eyes, flint, quick kick, etc conveniently survived every ambush attack! ;-) )
The Bus Wars were dark times. We'd get strafed at least once each way on the way to and from school every day and in hindsight that high visibility school bus yellow led to needlessly high casualties.
i just bought one and the landing gear was in. im afraid to open them out as i can feel the pressure as im trying to open it. looks like my rattlers landing gear will be in from here on out. thanks for the info on this vehicle. cobra!
I am so glad I found your video. Your video has great quality and proves that Hasbro didn't a lot to recreate the Rattler in the 1:12 scale. Hasbro GI JOE reps talked as if the designer redesigned the new Rattler from scratch. All the guy did was look at the 84 Rattler and increased the scale size for 6 inch figures.
I'm struggling to understand the stress mark you mentioned... I always held my Rattler and other toy planes from underneath, and always saw other kids hold theirs the same way. At ant rate, it was a decent toy up until the gold colored one was released. The Night Raven waa waaay better though.
I will disagree with your second choice of the Moray. While yes, the Rattler was the best toy/vehicle in Cobra's arsenal, I owned the Moray and it was very prone to breaking and falling apart . The hidden missile turret in the front of the Moray which always fell apart. I would say a tie for the second greatest Cobra vehicle would be between the Water Moccasin and the Hiss Tank. There you have three vehicles, the Hiss, Water Moccasin and the Rattler which will allow Cobra to conquer the world by land, sea and air.
+Dave Ferrato all worthy contenders. yes while the moray did have the breakage problem with the .50cals and the quad missile launcher it was the only sea craft worthy of taking on the killer whale the flagg and tub. en masse but would still do considerable damage. even the depth charges could possibly sink the shark.it could also hold extra eels to sabotage the Joe's naval yard. the moccison was flat bottomed and good for shallow waters. to rule the world the oceans must be conquered and the moray could operate in deep oceans.
That is a very concise breakdown of the Moray and I will agree with you, if the Moray were created in our reality it would destroy every boat/ship in G.I. Joes's entire fleet.
HoodedCobraCommander788 no its exactly the same as this one with a few minor alterations .sadly it looks nice the color is darker but they reused the mold every detail is the same.I'm not sure if the modern figures would fit in the vintage ..you think they would have improved it with actual instruments in the cockpit but they didn't.
As a boy I wanted the Rattler and also wanted the Dragonfly. I had a few different machines and figures. But being the type kid I was I never asked for anything and never complained when I got anything. All my old GI Joes, Transformers and (my favorite) Star Wars things burned up my parents detached garage. Lightning struck went through the roof and hit the floor ignited my Dad's paints and various gas cans. We got home and it had burned itself out. Was a hard strike, it left a big crater in the concrete floor. Would've been nice to have had some of them but time erases everything eventually. Enjoyed seeing the videos, took my mind back to better times. Also lost my Matchbox and Hotwheels cars I played with before GI Joe shrank from the big cloth clothed version, and before Empire Strikes Back (The Best Star Wars Movie) Ok no more rambling.
Does the number “41” on the nose carry the same meaning as military aircraft today? And if it is, have other nose numbers been observed like “40” or “42”... or “09” or whatever. And if that’s true, what’s the “Z06” mean. If you were to have two Cobra Rattlers I would have to assume some of these markings would be different because they’re physically different airplanes. They can’t all possibly be marked with a nose number 41, or are they???
It can be done. Just be careful. I don't think I have moved the landing gear since this video. I like to have the gear down, so I just leave them down.
Simply grasp the landing strut near the base at the point it connects to the plane; you'll relieve pressure on the piece that way (I open my CRUSADER's bay doors that way too)
i disagree with you wholeheartedly on one small point. All drivers should come with either a usable service knife, small compact arm. or a tool/communications device. Backpacks and other accessories would have been nice but i would not deem it necessary. All drivers and pilots should have a fighting chance in the field in case they get shot down or their vehicles incapacitated.
I'm a little confused I got my rattler around Christmas 85 it did not have the gunner behind cockpit or the movable wings it was the same color blue and had interchangeable panels with bullet holes . if any one knows why there is a difference between these two styles please let me know?
What are these words you are speaking of? Imagination? Pretend? Kids today are missing out on so much. My imagination could make way better damage and sound effects than today's toys and video games.
this is probably my favourite cobra aircraft vehicle, fantastic!
I was in the Cobra Air Corps in the 80's. My name is CLASSIFIED.
How are you doing Classified? LOL
Has always been my favorite Cobra vehicle ever since I got it at Toys R Us!!!
The hiss was sweet too
Cobra was just better

your contributions to science have been noted ;-)

Awesome stroll down memory lane. Thank you.
+Jeremy Russell You're welcome!

Amazing aircraft... Combining aspects of the A-10 Warthog and VTOL !!!

Yes, I have the Rattler; its an acronym standing for Rapid Attack Tactical Triple-engine Low-level ERadicator (cool, huh?)
the gun is based on the A-10's GAU-8 30mm cannon, not the 20mm M61, as used on the F-14/Skystriker.
I'm happy wild weasel is a character not a bunch of troopers because I do like the character.
The Bus Wars were dark times. We'd get strafed at least once each way on the way to and from school every day and in hindsight that high visibility school bus yellow led to needlessly high casualties.
+Parpyduck I expect more school districts will be switching to camouflage.
One of the two best Cobra planes throughout the entire vintage line. Wild Weasel is my favorite figure from 1984.
i just bought one and the landing gear was in. im afraid to open them out as i can feel the pressure as im trying to open it. looks like my rattlers landing gear will be in from here on out. thanks for the info on this vehicle. cobra!
Dont know if anyone else mentioned it, but the search lights are on upside down

Your right
nice.
Used to have it as a child
You didn't really tell us if you liked it or hated it. I think it's an awesome vehicle, and the battle damage panels are cool.
I always loved the Cartoons that had Wild Weasel in them. He Voiced so Correctly in the sunbow series.
The gun on the Rattler was actually influenced by the GAU-8 Avenger 30mm gattling gun which the real world A-10 uses.
Wild Weasel rules it - GREAT uniform. Thank you for posting this.
HA! I like him too; I actually wrote a more detailed bio on ol' WW on Word
I'm struggling to understand the stress mark you mentioned... I always held my Rattler and other toy planes from underneath, and always saw other kids hold theirs the same way. At ant rate, it was a decent toy up until the gold colored one was released. The Night Raven waa waaay better though.
best cobra toy in my opinion. 2nd was the cobra moray
It was an excellent vehicle. I will have to review the Moray soon.
I will disagree with your second choice of the Moray. While yes, the Rattler was the best toy/vehicle in Cobra's arsenal, I owned the Moray and it was very prone to breaking and falling apart . The hidden missile turret in the front of the Moray which always fell apart.

Though as a toy, the Moray did have some engineering flaws particularly in the missile silos.
Cool ..I have the 25th anniversary one...mine is more purple but its pretty much the same just a updated one ..
I don't have the 25th Anniversary version. Did they fix the fragile landing gear problem?
HoodedCobraCommander788 no its exactly the same as this one with a few minor alterations .sadly it looks nice the color is darker but they reused the mold every detail is the same.I'm not sure if the modern figures would fit in the vintage ..you think they would have improved it with actual instruments in the cockpit but they didn't.
Interesting. I may have to pick one up sometime and check it out.
HoodedCobraCommander788 its a nice piece..i never got the vintage one I wanted it so bad when I was young never got it until couple of years ago
As a boy I wanted the Rattler and also wanted the Dragonfly. I had a few different machines and figures. I got this one year for Christmas could have swore it was bigger but maybe it was because I was littler
Cool review
Recently got ny own Cobra Rattler! Oh yeah, the landing gears seem really weak. Nice review!
Great video
Okay, you talked me into it. I'm buying one on eBay.
good review
Solid review
To avoid landing gear 'lean' use black/blue rubber bands to anchor struts to the wings (like I did!)
I kinda like the idea of the bus wars.
Got one for Christmas, but I'm too scared to extend the landing gear.
It can be done. Just be careful. I don't think I have moved the landing gear since this video. I like to have the gear down, so I just leave them down.

wild weasel is problably the air corp commander
i wish i'd had this one
do you know how many times this mold was reused?
Ballsy move you even demonstrated how the gears work and that’s why you are the people’s champ!!!
i disagree with you wholeheartedly on one small point. All drivers should come with either a usable service knife, small compact arm. or a tool/communications device. whiteboy13s it might've been a foreign version or possibly a lanard knockoff is my guess
Lanards battle tank was sweet I still have mine
Cobra has better weapons
had to subscribe....my fav toys of all time...so much nastalgia
+Mike Anderson Thank you!
it suppose to be Cobra BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrt
What are these words you are speaking of? Imagination? Pretend?
Kids today are missing out on so much. My imagination could make way better damage and sound effects than today's toys and video games.
Proud Rattler and Skystriker-owner here. Still in my moms basement waiting on me to clean them after 30 years
G.I Joe, niggahs!!
+William Walaszek I have one yes, thank you
+William Walaszek But you replied to me?
HCC, regarding if it can fly, just hold it tethered in a wind tunnel; If it can...it will! ;-)
Cobra RATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATTLE
Only buy Rattlers from left handed kids... check! Lol
Last I saw it my Rattler was in pieces. Cool toy, wasn't made very well.
It did have some major weak points. But it looks great!
I agree on the looks. Granted the A-10 was one of my fave planes growing up.
@@tikifire I think you're drunk. It's exceptionally well made. It just had some weak points as all. Most Joe vehicles do.
I was used to get the Cobra toys cuz they were cheaper nobody wanted to be the bad guy
Cobra toys just looked so much better
RAT-LER ……why do people always pronounce It RADDLER?! Or RATDLER ….there is no D in the pronunciation
You are very brave.. I am scared to move my front landing gear...
