Looking at the valley I thought that it needed more but then Scott was like "if you need lots, use more". Ah, he's on top of that. Good. Cut to him explaining his mistake and I realised that was a teaching experience. Good work! Watch out when topping up the goo from the outside that you don't accidentally push a blob into the valley. Hard to bed in a cam with silastic in the oil return...
Not gunna lie when the engine swung around like that on the stand I nearly had a brown mark in my underwear🙃 Can't wait for you to get Dad's ute running 👌🏻
I lost a hold of a 340 like that once and it dragged the engine stand over and dented the hell out of a black crinkle finish 273 valve cover I spent a lot of time on refinishing.
Yeah me too. The old ticker skipped a few beats as well. I think the donk not ending up on terrafirma was more luck than good management. Lesson to the weary Scotty?
Yes my heart dropped a beat or 3 !! I've seen stands with a crank mechanism on them made from an old brake slack adjuster off truck air brake systems. Work pretty well too !!
I finally got 5 to sit and watch this episode, Grabbed my Carnage Tee from the washing basket, made a Boubon and Pepsi Max and settled in. Ya know what I like about Edelbrock? Whenever anyone asks where the cork gaskets go, the answer is always "in the bin" (unless you are going for concourse points and it was OEM I guess) I wouldn't have even used them on the sump personally, never had one that sealed properly for any length of time! This is looking awesome can't wait to see it in the ute!
Best part of working on the engines in new Volvo trucks is there's fuck-all gaskets in them - instead the mating surfaces are very finely machined and include a teeny little groove that runs all the way around the piece, and what you do is cut the tip off a small tube of silicone so it has a tiny little (~1mm) hole and just draw a clean smooth line of sealant around the part right next to the groove. When you bolt the cunt up it seals up the machined faces perfectly and any extra sealant ends up in the groove, safely away from the coolant and oil galleries. In fact the only gaskets in the whole engines I can remember were for the CFRP sump and cam cover (both with multi-lip sealing faces and fully captive when installed into the cam cover and sump), and some rubber seals that went around the unit injector tubes in the cylinder head. Being used to working on older engines with typical shitty paper and/or cork gaskets which were subsequently dirty greasy things to work on growing up, having bloody great big diesel engines that were spotlessly clean was a revelation!
@@ChristopherHallett I'm just an amateur, but in my youth had a succession of questionably chosen British Leyland vehicles with all manner of seemingly purposefully designed leak points. These days I mostly work on Japanese cars which usually use machined grooves and rubber gaskets which are so simple. Worst thing I've dealt with recently was cleaning the factory paper gasket off a Barra - lord only knows what they used to stick it to the block but it damn near destroyed my back reaching in and scraping and scraping and scraping - used half a can of gasket remover and it still took me a full hour to get it clean. Did a Toyota water pump the following weekend - big rubber o-ring in a groove like you'd think any sane engineer would use - quick wipe with some degreaser was all that was needed.
Saw your post on FABO and like what you are doing! Finally a 318 getting some love! I look forward to the results. You didn't ask but I will say I would love to see a different cam tested as well. Most mopar guys seemed to ditch the Ebrock cam for their brand of choice.A nice solid lifter cam would make that 318 a contender IMO. Thanks for documenting your build and for building a 318! Cheers
I like that you went with the air-gap intake. As well as blocking off the heat riser ports I always ran a valley pan to keep the splash off the bottom of the intake. The pan also kept a lifter from getting tossed out of it's bore if a pushrod failed. I was wondering if you were going to port-match the heads to the intake but the gasket match on the heads looked pretty close. How did it match up on the intake? Looking forward to following the remote oiling plumbing and seeing her go back into the chassis.
really happy you had someone help you turn the engine back over after you did the sump Scotty, seeing such a great looking engine swinging back and forwards was a balloon knot clenching moment !! :)
Nice work. Youv'e inspired me to take apart my car unessasarily and leave parts all over the place until I die and it gets auctioned off to a scrap metal dealer.
A note of caution for young and new players. When gooing up a gasket with whatever sealer you’ve got BEWARE you don’t use too much to the point that the excess squeezes out into some places you really don’t want it like the oil galleries the pickup or the water ports. Also not all sealers play nice with what you’re sealing, they can react with the gasket material or expand and block off something when hot or dissolve or conduct electricity causing galvanic corrosion. I once had a brand new reconditioned engine that blew up in the first week before it was even run in because the apprentice or gorilla they had assemble and fit it used about four caulk gun tubes of sealer . Some of it was put in places it shouldn’t go but most of it blocked off the oil pickup and the radiator cores. They tried to blame me and the old engine for all the sealer in everything except that they also fitted a new radiator at the same time.
Nice Scott. Also nice to see Edelbrock using Alloy bolts to stop galvanic corrosion. I think of all those 3v heads with stainless bolts and them stripping on removal. Note: Horses for Drunk Bogans at Cup time is a National Anthem LOL
Way up in the sky little darling, and if you fall I'll pick you up, pick you uuuuuuup. Dammit Scotty! As soon as you said Daryl Baffleplate I was gone!🤪😂🤣
Keep at it Scotty, i like the alloy look and ARP fasteners are the best things to use. I've spun an engine or 2 like that as well on exactly the same looking stand, no problem. Groovy
welcome to this episode of carnage where we show you how to use 35 tubes of selastic that could fall off into the engine and block the pick up later ;) I kid boys, well done as usual, loving the engine build! Cant wait to see this thing rip!
Scotty, what plugs are you planning on running? (Brand wise and type) also thanks for showing the water pump bolts.. I’ve searched the internet high and low to figure out if those bolts went into water jackets like the later sbf.
Looks like you need to get a engine stand with a crank handle. I need to get a heavy duty one, the one I have got a little bit deformed when I had my 4L engine from my 1994 NC2 Fairlane on it for a few days. I'm not game to use it for my 460 big block I got about 15 years ago, it's all cast iron the block, heads and intake plus there's a cast iron housing on the back for a direct shaft drive, it was in a jet boat and before that it started life in a truck.

What a shame you had to use a cork gasket on the sump pan... You did the right thing putting some RTV on it... Good singing too by the way Scotty... Watchout you don't get a copyright strike.
