These are great tips for a fairly new gardener. I dont want to overload my garden beds too quickly. Being patient is the key. Thank you Devin! 😊

This is fueling my excitement for Spring! I can’t wait to see what comes back… I’m a little worried because we’re on our second winter in a row without any snow cover here in my area of Minnesota. Despite the fact that I cover all my beds with ground up leaf mulch, I lost some perennials last year and I really think it was due to the lack of extra snow cover. I lost things like Heuchera, a Delphinium, Cardinal Flower, and even a Curley Fries Hosta. If our winter continues with no snow cover, I’m going to start checking earlier to see how dry the ground is as well. Last year, when the bulbs started to come up, I noticed the ground was really dry as well, due to no snow to melt and start watering the perennials. So that could have played a factor as well.

Oh jeez that is really frustrating! Have you ever considered mulching free wood chips? I think they would hold moisture in the soil better than the ground of leaves

Last year, I purchased a house with ZERO landscaping, with grass growing right up to the foundation on all sides. My 1st Spring/Summer, I created breathing room, carving out garden boarders all around the house and back deck and sheet mulching. I also dug out 2ft strip along the fence that enclosed my entire back yard and laid weed fabric and mulch, as I don't want vegetation around the fence line. The only Perennials I picked out last year were 5 dwarf red twig dog woods, a couple of dwarf big leaf Hydrangea and a few really beautiful upright phlox. My last house was professionally landscaped and I'm familiar with a lot of plant varieties for different sun exposures but I still get really overwhelmed about commiting...even after laying out multiple garden designs, with that things I want where and often leave the garden center empty handed if they don't have exactly what I'm looking for. I wish I had a better sense of substitutes that would work equally well when I can't find exactly what I'm looking for. Feels like things are in the garden center 1 day and gone the next...so much pressure, so little time.

I can totally understand your frustration! There is soooo much to know when getting a garden started. Just take it slow and don’t try to fill it out in one season. It’s a slow process

In '23 I bought a Roberta's Pinky Winky hydrangea. Came well packed, started out really well the 1st year. No blooms but that was ok. In '24 it came back great (in a container) and come fertilizer time I bought was was needed from a big box store, followed the directions very carefully and it died faster than a fly under a swatter. I was so mad and frustrated. I'm waiting to see if my mini lilac comes back this year. I've tried so much with plants over the years with little success. This year I'm only doing annual seed packet flowers. If they come up, great. If not, great. Good vid, Devin.

Hmm that’s interesting. Do you think it was really root bound and just dried out? Panicle hydrangea need lots of root space p

@@plantvibrations I planted it into a 20" pot, I thought that'd be plenty of room for a new young plant to stretch out. It was doing soooo good, lol.

I’ve had mixed success in over wintering tender perennials. Caladiums and begonias don’t usually fair too well. But geraniums on the other hand are all stars. I have some in full glorious boom in late January. I also have some Gerbera daisies that are hanging in there. Cannas and Dahlias can be a lot of work. I’m pairing back on those.

How do you generally store your Geranium? it is definitely true though, many plants are just too much work to overwinter

@ I have some window wells which are pretty common in Amish country. I put them in there and water once a week. I did pull them into the basement last week when we were approaching zero degree overnight temps, but I’m not sure I really needed to. I left a few things in the window wells and they are still ok, including some alyssum and dapladina (spelling?)! My two Boston ferns are hanging in there too.

Hello Devin 👋. I purchased a lilac from your family's business on QVC about 5 years ago. I put it in a large pot on my porch. It looks like it needs to be transferred to the yard. When do you suggest we replant in the yard and where should we place it. It's one of the about 5 to 6 foot reblooming lilacs. My panicle hydrangea- strawberry Sunday is over 5 feet tall and about 5 feet wide. Gorgeous.
I'm in zone 7 middle Tennessee near Alabama border (50 miles approximately). Thanks!
Oh I want to know if you could suggest a shrub that can take the hot summer sun from the west side and about 12 to 15 feet tall. Trying to shade the west side from hot sun 🌞. Thanks 😊

Hi! That’s amazing! I suggest you transplant at the beginning of April. Regarding a plant to shade that side of your home, perhaps a Sambucus, Aronia, or Viburnum dentatum
