Seen it all now! Bit of a nightmare to speed up while changing into that faster gear tho needs abit of tweeking haha maybe an ancient lever downtube shifter from an old racer mounted to the seat post or something? Just to change these 2 small gears
Yes I think maybe a lever would be cool for some people if they decided to operate while riding , for me , what I intended was to be able to ride it like a single speed with the option of 2 gears , a high and low , maybe when you want a hard ride you switch to high and if you want easy ride u go on low. Something maybe you change once during a ride but not everytime you need it if that makes sense
Makes sense to me. As I’m not really into racing, and being more of a conservative city based guy, I mostl often ride on flat city ground. For flat city riding in my 7 - sprocket MTB, I basically just prefer to use two gears most often. Keeping my chain on my 16 tooth rear sprocket and simply shifting crossover on two of my front chain rings.( 34 - 48t) vise versa. However I seldom get to fully use my multi gear system only on occasional long road trips where there is some climbing involved and rugged terrain. To me there really isn’t a standard “right gear.” Depends really on the rider. Just select gears you’re comfortable with.
You can do this without a derailer. It's called kick-shift. It comes with a coaster brake and all you have to do is pedal back suddenly and then forward again to change gears. There's one sprocket and it changes the ratio via an internal transmission
That would make a non cassete wheel viable conversion too, 3 cog freewheels are somehow still on the market. Wonder if it would work with single speed wheel.
I used to have a similar set up on my trials bike when I was younger, one gear for getting where you’re going and another gear for trials when you got there.
Such a great idea! I ride a Salsa Stormchaser which has sliding dropouts. So, if I wanna change to the 2nd cog I gotta turn the bike upside down and loosen/tighten 4 screws and then 2 adjusting screws. 😕
Well it's an interesting setup. I had a 29er converted to a single speed 36:18 and I wished for an easier gear sometimes. I had an RD setup the same way but just as a tensioner. The high limit screw held the RD lined up with the 18t cog and the cable was set up the same way and just for the extra safety if the limit screw was to fail somehow. Added a 26t chainring besides the 36t one and added a front derailleur operated with a friction thumb shifter. Basically a 2x1 and it was nice for around town riding.
I read somewhere in the replies that you used 2 cogs with a spacer or spacers, but you could also use a White Industries DOS ENO Freewheel if you wanted one pre-built.
I can understand in a urban usage were most of time only limited gears are used. But I would fit a old friction downtube shifter. Just a simple easy to maintain system.
