Paul Simon is top notch lyricist. You have to look really deep into his words to find what he is saying. He has given so much and I love him to pieces!
On 9/11/2001 my friend called and told me to listen to this song. We were in our 40’s, everyone knew this song. We had already been crying all day. But the part about dreaming of dying, flying past the Statue of Liberty… we can’t be forever blessed. It just felt like Paul knew America wouldn’t last forever. Or something like that. Thank you for playing this. All his work is exceptional.
As someone who has covered Paul Simon and Simon and Garfunkel songs for 50 years, I would say that his best lyrics are in "Kathy's Song" and if you want to hear some really good acoustic guitar playing, listen to "Anji" which is a guitar solo. It has a fantastic walking bass line with two other parts playing simultaneously. His guitar playing is off the charts on that one.
Paul Simon is a national treasure. He is a Gershwin award winner for songwriting. He is now 82 years old and near the end of the line. There is a recent documentary on Simon strongly recommended: The Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon (I saw it on Amazon Prime) which was released this year, and features him making his most recent, and possibly his last album (available in full on TH-cam) - Seven Psalms, which continues his exploration of spirituality throughout his career and most recently as he approaches the end of his life. The documentary covers nearly all of his career from the beginning until the present day, and includes biographical information about wives, kids and relationships. I recently wrote an essay on the occassion of the 60th anniversary of the assasination of John F. Kennedy and led off the essay with a Simon song - The Sounds of Silence, which he wrote to capture the mood of the country at the time of the assasination. That song was also played after 9/11. It is featured in the documentary, along with many of his other great efforts. There have been perhaps over 250 songs written about the assassination but Simon probably wrote the first one and certainly had a hit with his. th-cam.com/video/ANtntuDslnk/w-d-xo.html

Paul’s greatest achievement was his concert in Rhodesia. South Africa, at the time, wouldn’t allow him to have a mixed audience and lineup. The music is on his Graceland album.
This "American" tune is actually German, having been composed about 425 years ago by German composer Hans Leo Hassler (though Paul Simon did add a bridge). The original lyrics were based on a medieval Latin text. They have since been translated into German and English. If you want to experience a gorgeous performance of "O Sacred Head, Sore Wounded" (with harmonizations by Johann Sebastian Bach) watch the video on TH-cam by The Gesualdo Six.
We sing “O Sacred Head Surrounded” every Holy Week at church and I STILL hear An American Tune in my head with it. I have to remember the correct words or else I’ll go into this one!
The tune itself is based on a 17th century classical piece, and the words were written in the aftermath of Watergate, in a country recovering from its biggest ever political scandal, but sadly are just as relevant today. This comes from the album "There Goes Rhymin' Simon" - my go-to album if I've had a rough day. Every song on it is a classic. Try Paul's song "Loves Me Like a Rock", or the Simon & Garfunkel song "The Only Living Boy in New York". And yes, Paul is a legend, still writing in his 80s.
Paul is amazing!!! He has so many different styles Late in the evening ,Graceland, and Diamonds on the soles of her shoes are a little bit faster than this but he has hundreds of awesome songs Even his newer stuff is incredible
Thanks to Larry. I love this song. I have a strong memory of the first time I heard it and the way it resonated with me on that first hearing. "Still, when I think of the road we're traveling on I wonder what's gone wrong" This was the line that, for me, changed the focus of the song from personal to the direction America as a nation was going. With our current hour seeming even more uncertain, I find melancholy and comfort in this song still. It's one of several where I turn up the volume and its magic wash over me.
The great thing about this song is Paul and Arthur sang it together (for the first time) during The Concert in Central Park 1986?. Garfunkle's high vocals make that rendition a true fan favorite judging by the thunderous applause.
This time in the 70s wasn't a particularly uplifting time. The Viet Nam was wearing on everyone. However at this time, a beautiful red thoroughbred named Secretariat won the Triple Crown setting record times. He lifted the whole country's spirits when we needed it. RIP, Big Red.
This album came out when I was 8ish and I listened to it over and over. Didn’t get the full understanding of the lyrics but the music and the rhyming schemes spoke to my young soul. Loves Me Like A Rock was my favorite then
The two best singer/songwriters (IMO) are Paul Simon and Willie Nelson. Willie was giving a small concert in New York I believe, and invited Paul on to the stage. Of course, the audience went nuts, as they should have, and they performed “Homeward Bound”. I was then transported to what I can only describe as Heaven. Please, for everyone’s’ sake, you need to hear this…it’s just so beautiful. Peace. ❤
No one better than Paul Simon than putting what you really think, deep down, into a few words … it’s a very special talent … not too much of that around now … I’m just glad I was around when he was.
This is from Paul's 2nd (I think) solo album "There Goes Rhymin' Simon". Every song is like this one, a gem. (But I guess the same could be said of most of his songs!)
I remember the Nixon times, the Vietnam War unrest and the uneasy sense that America was tarnished by bad leadership and worse causes. "American Tune" expressed that feeling exactly and it's just as current today. Thanks, Sebs 😃
I'm going to suggest an artist for you to look at everything this man has written. Kris Kristofferson. Paul Simon is talented. Thank you for your reactions!
You should check out the revised lyrics in the Simon/Giddens version, Newport Folk 2022. “We didn’t come here on the mayflower. We came on a ship in a blood red moon”. Stunning.
Paul Simon is a genius lyricist, second only to Bob Dylan IMO. He's also a great producer, arranger, musician and singer. He was the driving force behind Simon and Garfunkel, Art Garfunkel just had a beautiful voice. Then Simon went on to a hugely innovative and inventive solo career.
I watched this on SNL as an 11 year old and there was Nixon’s resignation, the Vietnam War had just ended, there was a huge disillusionment with the USA. This is my all time favorite Paul Simon solo performance. ❤
Watch the video for You Can Call Me Ray. Two things you need to know about it. It's so simple, it's hilarious. The guy in the video with him, is Chevy Chase. He's a legendary comedian from the 70s & 80s.
This song was a source of comfort and consolation for me during the Trump administration and the rise of the far right in America (and Paul Simon sang it from his home during the COVID lock down). A truly beautiful song that gently reminds us that while there is cause for concern (if not despair), there is always room for hope. Thank you for reacting to this song.
Hope you had fun on your trip and are not exhausted by the end of it! This is an awesome song and Simon has very few piers at this level of song writing! With Paul’s voice you feel the words and the meaning so well! Giddens was the only individual singer to perform with Simon, and Paul simply accompanied her on guitar which was an unusual setup. Simon introduced Giddens by saying, "I made a new friend this week." So, I'm guessing this was his idea rather than that of the producer. Please complete your study of this work by bringing in one of the versions by the extraordinary Miss Rhiannon Giddens. Paul Simon rewrote the lyrics especially for her. If I had to pick just one, I'd look for the one backed by Francesco Turrisi & Martin Hayes. The others are important too because Paul Simon just stands back and lets Rhiannon sing. But the one I suggested has superior audio.
If you want to hear this song sung by a great singer, look for the live version he did with the magnificent Rhiannon Giddens. I cried, and that’s not my usual reaction to even the greatest songs.
If you liked that, I think you will love Johnny Cash's Man in Black. There's a live version on TH-cam where he talks at the start about writing the song. Amazing.
Another amazing version of this gem is Paul's duet with Rhiannon Giddens at a Grammy tribute to Paul. Paul doesn't sing, but plays the guitar. Rhiannon's voice conveys the same emotional yearning the song demands. It's a version that stays faithful to the song yet gives a new dimension. Love this song.. America needs this song right now, everyone thinks they are more important than everyone else but everyone is going through their own shit.. People think they've got it bad but reality is we have never had it so good..
Sooo after all this your takeaway should be that's what lies before us. Let's just get up every morning, go to the labor line, come home home and get some rest....then do it all again...thanks Joe.
It's only my humble opinion but Paul Simon is second only to Dylan in American songwriters. There are so many greats but the bodies of work of these two are, to me, the top of the pyramid.
Surely he's not just referring to recent immigrants. Almost the entire population of the USA is made up of immigrants from everywhere " they come on the ship they call the Mayflower" and then "the ship that sails the moon" to illustrate progress, a very clever line I always thought.

Sooo after all this your takeaway should be that's what lies before us. Let's just get up every morning, go to the labor line, come home home and get some rest....then do it all again...thanks Joe.
Call Simon is a first-generation American from Hungarian Jewish parents. They would have gone through the Holocaust
Paul was the genius writer but Art was the voice of the duo. Sad when they split.
It's only my humble opinion but Paul Simon is second only to Dylan in American songwriters. There are so many greats but the bodies of work of these two are, to me, the top of the pyramid.
You are not the only one. Many of us agree.
I made that the basis of my Senior Thesis in 1968: "Poetry is dead, but living again... on the radio.... with Bob Dylan and Paul Simon...."
Surely he's not just referring to recent immigrants. Almost the entire population of the USA is made up of immigrants from everywhere " they come on the ship they call the Mayflower" and then "the ship that sails the moon" to illustrate progress, a very clever line I always thought.
Old Americana tunes.
Excellent point about the quality of Paul's voice. Until he blends with Art
Read Morgan Wallen's history, especially history of drinking behaviors racial slurs on camera!!!
You think Paul Simon is a genius? Really?
I do. And many agree.
@hippie.... You think he's not?
If you don't agree, try listening to more of his work. Maybe you just got off on the first floor. There is soooooo much more there...
@@SondraLondonAuthor Your comment really gave me a lift.
Another 'average' voice behind brilliant song writing is Bob Dylan.
'Another' ouch!
Agreed. Bob can't sing his way out of a paper bag. But he is a poet.
