      There is a Chinabacker made now although it needs much modifications (like he mentioned ) improvement of the spacing on the nut.
      A Taylor 12 acoustic with a nice pickup would also have a close sound.
      $3000 Guitar plus the Luthier’s touch.
      Sounds amazing.

    The sound of these guitars bring tears to my eyes. That why I bought a 360/12V64 20 years ago and still play it allot. Mine has a custom made 12 saddle bridge. I like the half step down tuning you did. I'm going to try that with mine. I'd like to have Dr. Quist do mine but I' scared to ship it. Allot of guys on the BGC have had their Rick 12 strings that played hard set up by Mark. Not 1 complaint.

    Modfather, I have a Brownsville Electric 12, that I play Mr. Tamborine Man on plus some other of the "Moldy Oldies" on. Got if from Sam Ash Music, many years ago, because I didn't want to mortgage my house to buy a true Rick, and it was advertised as having the sound of the Rick 12's! I think it is pretty close! But, now as the years have gone by, the fingers don't want to work like they used to! But I have been trying to get the beginning of Turn, Turn, Turn down for years, even watched McGuinn's Video, with no luck! Just stubledd on your video, and will try what you said, as I now have a lot more time to play! Maybe it will sound better with your tutilage! Stay healthy and keep playing!

      Tom... Thanks for the message. So yes, I got this approach from McGuinn's 12 string dvd from years ago. He wasn't teaching banjo picking, but more of a strumming approach to this song. That's what I tried to duplicate here. Hope it helps. Best of luck to you out there...;-)

    NICE GUITAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had a Framus 12 string acoustic years ago that I foolishly traded for a 1200 baud modem. Doi! Thanks very much for the lesson! I have my work cut out for me now. That line; "I swear it's not too late" still brings tears to my eyes. Where does the time go? (and i fear that it just might be too late). Rock on my friend(s). SS way up here in Vancouver BC

      @modfather1965  ปีที่แล้ว

      Lovely comment. I hear you about that line. McGuinn and the boys really nailed it on this song, didn't they. Timeless and glorious.
      BTW, we've all made bone-headed guitar trades and sales in our time. One of the problems with having an ego that equates "having" with "being" is that the buzz we once got from possessing something fades all too quickly. Consequently, we look for the next hit, and we make a dumb decision to let something of real quality go in the name of simply having something new.

    I wish Rickenbacker would make their 12 strings with wider necks on the standard models because currently only that limited edition Pete Townsend model has the size of neck I like and it just too expensive!

    • @modfather1965
      @modfather1965  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don't forget the 660 models also have the wider neck, but yeah--would be great for both the 330 and 360 models to come with that option. I think what you'd see is the the old style 12 necks would soon become completely obsolete, except for a few aficionados like McGuinn...

    • @Edward1312
      @Edward1312 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I like a neck a tad wider than those guitars on a 12 ,I don't know why Rickenbacker don't just bite the bullet and give customers what they ask for, cant be anything other than obstinacy and being too stuck in the past.

I have small hands and still won't buy one. I got a Chinese knockoff, set it up well & it's alot of fun to play. It looks good and the neck is a comfortable width.

      @modfather1965  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +h2er80 Thanks for the encouragement. Indeed, I have used a Janglebox in the past, but I found that the compressor on my Boss ME-50 Multi-effects pedal (played through two amps) did the job wonderfully. There is a pattern during every verse , PICKED, not strummed, after each bass note movement ( a,d,e,d,)(( g string A, b string D, high e string open...))
    the timing is like saying the word , "California" ....D California, G California, F# California, A
    . The only person that strummed was David Crosby.
    If you can get a digital editor, slow it down and keep the pitch the same, it should be quite obvious. If I were sitting with you I could show you in a few seconds, but obviously not possible. You also have the A to D chords picked incorrectly as well, McGuinn, played the exact same thing each time there......
    You have the intro correct. ;-) Though Youre in Eb.

    I have The Essential Byrds compilation and try to play along to "Turn! Turn! Turn!" in D-major with my very bright-sounding Tele--not 12 strings but still sounds good. My problem is the tuning. I'm certain that the recording I have is not tuned to A=440 Hz. I haven't bee able to find anything on the web to tell me what A is tuned to for The Byrds' recording. Maybe the version on The Essential Byrds is off and other recordings are at A=440. Do you know? Are you able to play along with your Byrds recording of the song? This is driving me nuts.

      @@modfather1965 : Thanks for the McGuinn lesson link. For my part, since I don't play in a band, my way to play in an ensemble is to play along with an MP3 player plugged into my guitar amp. Hence my question about tuning. I have solved The Beatles' "Ticket to Ride" problem. The records were slowed down to A=431 Hz. And Oasis' "Don't Look Back in Anger" is sharp at around A=450 Hz. There are other songs that are off. I'm going to use my digital tuner to figure out "Turn! Turn! Turn!". Keep the excellent video lessons/performances coming! Merry Christmas from Winnipeg, Canada.

    Please excuse my silly question that is coming up. I want to buy this guitar as a learning instrument. All I know now are some chords on a six string. I will begin a beginners lesson and go back to basics , but I want an electric and I want this guitar to be the only in I have...........what do you think ? I just love this sound and I think I would play mine with a mission to be good with a guitar that I truly desire...thank you for reading my question....Cheers !

    • @modfather1965
      @modfather1965  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think your plan for a Rickenbacker 12 sounds just like mine was... I didn't (and still don't) really know how to play the guitar, let alone a 12 string, but I wanted one badly to provide me additional incentive to learn. Let me tell you... A Rickenbacker 12 string is a fine, fine thing, but it needs to be "set up" well in order to be truly enjoyable. I would recommend getting either a 660/12 model or a 1993 Plus (both wide neck models). If you don't get one of those, but a standard Rickenbacker 12 (e.g., the 330/12 or 360/12), send it to Mark Arnquist of Seattle and have him do his $500 12-point modification to it. He turns a standard Rickenbacker 12 into a MUCH more playable instrument. Finally, you'll want a compressor pedal to get the most out of your Rickenbacker 12. I highly recommend the Boss ME-50 multi-effects pedal to make your 12 really sing. It has a fabulous compressor, along with about 50 other effects, built right into one pedal which is easy to use. You can nab one of those on Ebay for about $150 these days. Best of luck!!!

      @Deebz270 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      *modfather 965* I always have advocated that people should learn guitar on an acoustic 12 string. That is how I started out. Because of the wide string spacing, or double the amount of strings, it is easy, as beginner, to place your fingers where required for the relevant chord; no missing the strings with one's stiff little fingers... The wide fretboard and usually thicker necks, also stretch the fingers. Once one is accustomed to playing all the main chords on a 12 string, playing a 6 string, especially an electric is easy-peasy.
      My first guitar was a chipboard LP copy, that was a bit of a dog, but shortly after, I obtained an Eko 12 Ranger, bought in Naples, Italy. Where my ship, the aircraft carrier - Ark Royal, was visiting at the time and this was my first visit to Italy. I played the Eko more than the LP copy... About 8 months later, with some of the strings (esp the 6th 'G' ) having busted, I converted the Eko to 6 string. Now, I would not advocate converting a 12 to a 6, because the guitar is designed for the tension of 12 strings, however, the Eko was built like the Ark, with a fretboard almost as wide as our flight deck! So it did not cause any issues. The Eko is a great guitar for beginners and with it's bolt-on neck and 'zero fret', is easy to set up really well. The company tend to use particularly heavy lacquer on the body, which does tend to deaden the tonality quite a bit, but I discovered that, by removing (sanding back) the lacquer on the top, makes the instrument far brighter and tonally responsive, for a laminate topped guitar.

All the 330's "Back in the Day came with "DOT" markers, while the 360's had the more coveted "Trapezoids". Then there were the "Townsend" models that had the Dot inlays, and the "F" hole instead of the Slash, and were designated as 330 F. I don't know why Pete wanted the "F" hole, considering that they were just going to be added to his "SMASH" pile? Such a criminal waste, IMHO! For the 1st two sets of strings the high E and its other string are tuned identically to each other. So, two E strings identical, then two B strings identical. The remaining G through low E string pairs are tuned an octave apart. When you strum from the lowest string to the highest (strumming down),
      you will be touching the higher octave string and then its lower sounding counterpart. The higher octave strings are also slightly offset from the lower octave ones -- except on those first 2 courses.
