Just picked up the note 20 ultra, love the video on it so far but I'll stick to my Sony for photo. I'm super disappointed to see that companies like beastgrip and moment lenses do not have very much android support. Also the not having as much dynamic range in 8k does not bother me so much since most dslr cameras are going to be more in line with that anyway if you're not shooting in LOG and it's what I'm used to. My Osmos 4 comes in the mail today and my moment lenses shouldn't be far behind. Love these videos and can't wait to do more testing myself as an android user.
Thank you for your work on this! I own the note 20 ultra and I'm getting into videography. Content like this is so helpful for me and I'm convinced I want to use smartphone lenses and cage system to get started on my journey.

I love filming on smartphones. Having come from video production in the past, I’ve taken the road of seeing how far I can go without the crazy rigs and cameras and branching off on my own. Currently finishing the final draft of a short film and would absolutely love to shoot it with the new 1.55 Anamorphic lens since it’s the very first of its kind. And I wanna see how well it’ll play with a diffusion filter. Amazing video, thank you!
I’ve been really in love with the idea of shooting a short film about the trajectory of people who sacrifice something to pursue their craft, but doing it in a narrative sense, and being able to shoot it a variety of different locations that I otherwise couldn’t via my iPhone 12 would be really cool. I think this technology allows us to think about creating films in new ways, and it’s seems like we’re genuinely on the precipice of a sort of mobile revolution in films. The beastgrip gear would certainly help with that :)

The upper end will always require professional results but, with the information from videos like yours and approachable gear from companies like Beastgrip, the threshold for achieving enjoyable video results has never been so easy for the casual amateur. I’d love to see how much better the Beastgrips ecosystem of products could make the 45 minute smash n’ dash videos I make for clients (which are 100% filmed and edited all from an iPhone)

I would love to capture the Art Deco architecture popular around downtown Cincinnati at night with the 1.55x anamorphic lens. My plan is to look for different light sources (the Holidays makes it easier) to highlight the organic flares achievable only through an anamorphic lens. Compared to other mobile anamorphic lens on the market, I prefer the nuanced hues that the 1.55x produces. Like you, I own the iPhone 12 Pro Max, Beastgrip Pro, BeastCam app (which has become my new favorite over Filmic Pro)... and would just need this lens to start capturing cinematic flares!
I just finished building the perfect "smart film making" kit... .. or so i thought. Started with a Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra and got to the last step by placing the order for the Beastgrip pro+wide-angle lens (to be delivered in 12 days). Came looking for a video that talked about using Galaxy Note 20 Ultra with BeastGrip and landed here finding the missing secret ingredient to my kit, "The anamorphic lens". Now that would not only take my kit beyond perfection, but could rocket my film projects to a whole new dimension. So it's only fair ... :-D
09:00 Is a fair comparison doing it without Filmicpro? All these features are professional features which shouldn't be used with AUTO mode of the built-in camera app. The camera app is NOT pro only saying PRO in their menu.
I want to shift to Iphone filmaking only, but now with these new lenses and Beast Grip rigs it looks like a real possibility. The quality and anamorphic capabilities makes it a damn serious cinema tool.
@@initialfocus appreciate this! To add on to the convo - do you have a gut gauge on how much light you’re losing through these stages of glass (cine lens/dof/macro lens)? Either way we’re shooting! And it almost seems like that Dolby vision flexibility makes up for it a little for recovery?
Hey! Sorry didn’t respond before. I believe on their site they mention using the DOF takes about 20% of the light so it can get pretty rough in ultra low light uses. Dolby vision looks good but doesn’t help in low light anymore than using any other shooting mode in a 3rd party app! Hope this helps.
I want to try the anamorphic lens on my iPhone 12 Pro Max because I believe the best phone camera needs the best grip and best lens. A marriage made in heaven!
I've been delving into mobile filmmaking over the last few years ever since I got the chance to work on a set for an extended period (I want to learn all about cinematography). Due to lack of budget I've only been able to drool at beast grip's offerings, I would love to get my hands on the beastgrip and anamorphic lens to step up my gear
awesome video, I own a 12 Pro Max which I hope to use for all my photojournalism work in 2021. I create behind the scenes video and promotional films for my clients including documentaries. I usually use a Canon mirrorless camera but thinking of using my iPhone for some projects as its a lighter setup.
Would like to use the anamorphic to create movies and memories with my phone! The DOF Adapter is super exciting, seeing how i always wish i had a narrower DOF on smartphones.
I’d love to use this beast grip set up on my own personal shoots but more than that; I’d love to have a set up like this to teach to my video production students at Missouri Baptist University.

Ding! Ding! Ding! And the winner is iPhone! I can’t wait to get my hands on the Beastcage for 12 pro max. That 1.55x Anamorphic Lens should be nice for travel videos. Thanks for the DOF tip. 37mm mounts for the lenses is growing on me. They just feel solid. Thanks great video!
I personally will still want the note 20 ultra since I'm not fully in the apple ecosystem... and I'll like to use its footage with anamorphic lens to master my video editing as a student that I am. And the other productivity feature the note has suits me. Thanks. Great video again
Wow, I have been considering getting a camera to take beautiful photos/videos as I start to explore many places and hiking recently I pick up. With anamorphic, I can expand my usage on my iPhone and possible for me to upload video on TH-cam too. It will provide me without increase a device to bring along since this combo with work too.
I feel that the comparison is close. But I opted for the Galaxy Note 20 ultra, for its versatility. But the two predominate in the smartphone world in filming.
I'd love both! Shoot with Beastgrip's brand new Anamorphic lens or DoF adapter in FilmicLog v3 and slap on Richard Lackey's LUT (Logv3 version coming soon) + FilmConvert Nitrate, you can pull off Arri Alexa looks from an iPhone 12! Incredible video Michael. Your channel is a great resource for all the iPhone filmmakers out there! Keep up the good work.
The anamorphic lens gives a perfect cinematic like video straight from your mobile phone, and for me who like shooting videos of different places when I travel, it will be a massive upgrade for my travel videos that will surely impress the viewers. It is a heaven sent prosumer product for aspiring travel videographers like me who uses their phones quite often to shoot great and inspirational travel videos.
I‘m still amazed at the dof you got out of the phones! I would use it to shoot a 1min short film. I want to create something that’s good without people knowing it’s a phone. I feel like this setup can be used to make phone footage look really good instead of “looking really good for a phone”. Let’s fool some people.

You should include Xperia 1 and 5 with their alpha cameras as well
Thank you for this. What is the specific 37mm macro lens adapter that wound up allowing the phone to focus properly w/ minimal vignetting on the DOF?
Thanks for reminding me! I just added it to the description if you refresh 👍🏼 sorry about that.
@michael tobin 🙏🏽
Iphone 12 pro with that anamorphic 🤤🤤🤤
Beastgrip anamorphic and its kit is all about quality 💥
I want to try the anamorphic lens on my iPhone 12 Pro Max because I believe the best phone camera needs the best grip and best lens. A marriage made in heaven!
I've been delving into mobile filmmaking over the last few years ever since I got the chance to work on a set for an extended period (I want to learn all about cinematography). Due to lack of budget I've only been able to drool at beast grip's offerings, I would love to get my hands on the beastgrip and anamorphic lens to step up my gear
I would like the anamorphic for my note 20 ultra because your videos inspire me to get the best out of your camera even if its a phone camera.
awesome video, I own a 12 Pro Max which I hope to use for all my photojournalism work in 2021. I create behind the scenes video and promotional films for my clients including documentaries. I usually use a Canon mirrorless camera but thinking of using my iPhone for some projects as its a lighter setup.
For documentary shooting beastgrip combo is ❤.
Definitely anyone who's gonna own this will be the lucky one 😍😂
I'd love to put my new 12 Pro Max to the test with the Beastgrip version of the Anamorphic
Don‘t know if the competition is open to Germany but guess I‘ll try🤗would like to level up iPhone with that anamorphic lens
"The iphone it just works."
Love that line.
And as always great video 😊
Would like to use the anamorphic to create movies and memories with my phone! The DOF Adapter is super exciting, seeing how i always wish i had a narrower DOF on smartphones.
I’d love to use this beast grip set up on my own personal shoots but more than that; I’d love to have a set up like this to teach to my video production students at Missouri Baptist University.
I like the anamorphic lenses. I want use lenses for some short films.
I’ve been a sub for a while of yours and man... you’re going to be huge! Your attention to detail and ability to break things down in laymen’s terms for us novice users is truly a gift. Can’t wait to see how your channel grows in the future!
I want to shoot nature nature videos with that amazing anamorphic 😍
I don’t have a IPhone 12 so I don’t think I can use the lens :( Thanks for the great video though!! Was very fun to watch!!😄
Lens can be used on any phone :)
ohHhhh yay :)
Love to put this equipment into action at local non-for-profit businesses.
I think it's about time to take phone filming seriously - an anamorphic lens is a must!
That's awesome! I went for Note 20 Ultra just cuz it's more versatile. I shoot a lot in low light/indoors and would love to try those lenses!
What is the name of that lens I can’t find it
I know this is a very late response but I have the 12 pro max. I liked it so much that I have bought it for both my kids and they are grown already. My youngest daughter works in production and she is using it daily. it's just a great phone. great camera.
Ding! Ding!
If this guy doesn’t have a million subs soon I’m gonna scream
He’s that amazing
I personally will still want the note 20 ultra since I'm not fully in the apple ecosystem... and I'll like to use its footage with anamorphic lens to master my video editing as a student that I am. And the other productivity feature the note has suits me. Thanks. Great video again
Need these lenses for iPhone to make music videos (had to sell all my equipment to move to Houston)
I am so glad I found you’re channel❤️
I’m so glad you commented! Welcome ❤️🙌🏼
I feel that the comparison is close. But I opted for the Galaxy Note 20 ultra, for its versatility. But the two predominate in the smartphone world in filming.
Was led to viewing this video today! Thanks for this review! You're great!
I wish i could be here 4 weeks earlier, would love to put my note10plus in this dream cage. ❣
I‘m still amazed at the dof you got out of the phones! I would use it to shoot a 1min short film. I want to create something that’s good without people knowing it’s a phone. I feel like this setup can be used to make phone footage look really good instead of “looking really good for a phone”. Let’s fool some people.
The flares. That’s the main reason. And the added bonus of using up the whole sensor for video too.
Using Anamorphic feels cool
Yooo! Are we going to get a Filmic Pro Log V3 vid? I wanna hear your thoughts and see your analysis of it
Was actually thinking of making a quick video on that today if you all want??
@@initialfocus hell yes, dude!!! I for one want to know if there’s that weird flicker like there so distinctly is with Dolby vision. If not, filmic pro is beating out Dolby in my opinion
I can see myself getting a lot out of this channel. I bought this phone (12 Pro Max) with the express mission to start down the videography track and seeing where it takes me. Now, if I won the anamorphic lens, firstly, I think I would have to go and order the BeastGrip :) Oh darn. I need to get fun things to use :) What I want to do most is start experimenting with nature videos as well as some how-to videos on Astrophotography and music here or there. Anyways, thank you for posting what you do and good luck to everyone with both your videography and the contest :)
Hey Cliff! Thanks so much for the comment and taking a peak at my channel! Its so great that you are going down the path of learning videography because you actually are the winner of this contest! Send me a message anywhere on social (Twitter & Instagram are @initialfocus) or email me at michael@initialfocusmedia.com and Ill forward your info including what phone you have you Beastgrip so they can hook you up with the Anamorphic lens and Beastgrip or cage! Try and reach out in the next 48 hours or I may have to pick someone else if I don't hear back! CONGRATS! Cant wait to see what you do with the gear!
Ive been documenting the impact covid has had in California and my biggest issue is most places see my eos r and tell me i cant use it so having those rigs and glass for my mobile device would work wonders in a pinch when im turned away last second due to using my actual camera
I would love to use the Beast Grip and lens combo to shoot and showcase the beautiful winter season here in Tallinn Estonia.
I want the Beastgrip so I can use it to shoot my next $1000 feature film as I teach others how to do the same on my channel.
What Dof used for?
Keep up the good work and giving your opinion info on these phones
I really like how this lens look, i would like to use It on my iPhone, it should be amazing
Want to try them on my iPhone 12 Pro Max. Just for a good upgrade. 👌🏻
Hey Michael,
Mid January I'll get my iPhone 12 Pro max.
I'd love to deal with anamorphic in my new device!!!
I already have a gimble, but there is no way to attach any lens in the phone. Beastgrip would help in this...
Great video analisys. I was expecting this video since you first announce it.
Thanks a lot for your guidance!!!|
Great job!!!
