the log on old soviet tanks was for unsticking it, you would chain it to the tracks and run it so that it would drag the log underneath the tank and either dig in or get traction on the log to pull itself out

In the bogs of Russia they couldn't field dedicated tow vehicles in fear that they would get bogged down too. So they just gave every crew a log to free the tank from the mud a cheap and efficient way of fixing a complicated problem. Some russian tanks today still carry those logs nowadays too because why change a winning strategy?

About the ATGM rapidly maneuvering they nerfed it a lot so it’s more realistic since beforehand as you saw you could make ludicrous last second changes. Apparently we've made a laser-guided version of that, and it's not even very expensive. Naturally, it was too cheap, and too good, so it got cancelled because it wasn't profitable enough and/or people in congress don't know a good idea when it hits them in the face (both are probably somewhat true).
I hate politics. I wish it was all merit-based. Good ideas would prosper, less good ideas would fall by the wayside. And you know what, war itself isn't a particularly good idea, now that I think of it.
And I'd be able to do something about it too, if I had the ability to sway more votes to my side while not myself seeking political office.

Yeah that's fine, but that's not a shell. That's a missile, fired from the tank barrel. The Russian tanks have that. Fun fact, heartbeat sensors are (possibly) real. They're very case specific and the use i heard for them were they real was for counterterror hostage operations in buildings with no moving water to determine the locations of people in the building.
Rather than detecting a heartbeat per se it was magnetically tuned to the movement of blood (which is mostly water, hence why the building must not have moving water interference),
Its like a supercomplicated version of holding two metal l-rods in your hand ti find underground moving water by watching for them to move due to the magnetic field.
As long as theres not much interference it could be used for hundreds of meters, with alot of interference it could barely work at 1.

0:59 Technically, the National Guard is the closest thing the US has to a militia. When the 2nd Amendment was written, the US was just a fledgling country with no standing army. Thus it's entire military strength depended on the common folk getting together and forming a militia to fend off potential invaders. THAT, more or less, is what the 2nd Amendment is meant for.

As someone who lives in the US and bothered to actually READ said amendment, there is NOTHING in there about it being about fending off invaders. It mentions security of a free STATE. The 'state' in this context is not the US as a whole, but the individual state in question. It's straight up an enshrined permission for a given state to give the finger against outside manipulation via forming their own local military powers.
Do keep in mind, the constitution and first ten amendments were written by people who had just finished with fighting the brits over tyrannical actions. There's quite a few places throughout the majority of legal documents and personal journals of the time that make it very clear that the federal government was supposed to be VERY limited in power, acting more as an overall coordinator and facilitator of communications between states, than the dictator of how state-level governance and laws are allowed to work. Of course, that falls apart within a few generations as the federal government starts grabbing for power.
Or to be more blunt:There is a reason the entirety of the 10th amendment is an explicit statement that outside of what was explicitly accorded to the federal government as it's domain, the federal government legally was not supposed to have any power. It is very explicit that state level laws are higher priority than federal, with the exception of certain things outlined in other sections of the constitution.
This is why the lack of education in the US is so goddamned heartbreaking.

@@jtnachos16 It's definitely one of the better ways of controlling the masses, having them not being particularly educated. If they think then they become harder to control as they start questioning the status quo.
The other thing is keeping certain bits of information out of their hands and/or out of sight. Which is what censorship is meant to do, among other things. Thankfully that is harder to do with the Internet around but those up high that wish to exploit power for personal gain are certainly trying their hardest with getting around that.

With the realism part of the game that applies mostly to their damage modeling (very in depth but sometimes glitches). The modeling of the vehicles are also included in this as apfsds shots to the side of a tank may just pass through and not kill enough crew or vital components to actually knock the enemy vehicle out. The "volumetric" shells make it so gun port shots have to truly be extremely precise while also turret neck shots are much harder to pull off due to this factor. They also appear to have things such as over pressure kill the crew (HE to lightly armored areas that only partially penetrate but overpressure nearby crew.

I started playing WT back in 2013-2014, way before MBTs were even a forethought for the gaijin team, which was focused on the current meta which was the IS-6, T-54, IS-3, Tiger II 105, Panther II, Leopard 1, Maus, Centurions, American T-29 30 32 and 34, M103, and such. Eventually they started to add more and more cold war tanks and such. It wasn't long until we had things like the MBT/KPZ 70, T-55AM, Conquer, and ATGM launchers. Oh and many nations were added like Italy, France, Sweden, China, and Israel. TBH, every major update that brought a bunch of new vehicles or a new nation has been years apart yet it feels like they were all yesterday. Crazy how time flies.

16:25 An old professional Starcraft player once gave a great thought experiment for strategy games: when you're really close to winning and you start thinking about all these extra plays to gain small advantages and counter the specific individual moves your opponent might plan to do, consider the following first: "Why shouldn't I just go f#$%ing kill them"?
It's like it's harder for people to see their own win conditions when they have an advantage, even though having an advantage is always worse than just winning now.
It's nice to hear that this though process is even valuable in the military. That usually means it's a good idea.

Fun Fact: Although it is possible to attach air-to-air missiles to a light attack helicopter, its primary use would be to attack other helicopters. Because of the limits of altitude and airspeed, helos are just woefully ineffective at dealing with fast moving fixed wind aircraft. Not to mention that air-to-air weapons are rarely used on helicopters because there is nothing a helicopter can do to another that a fighter aircraft and ground-to-air missiles can't do better.

  • @evernewb2073
    @evernewb2073 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

oh, and just to clarify: the vast _VAST_ majority of air combat takes place at subsonic speeds, specifically it takes place near whatever speed range the aircraft in question is most maneuverable at which at the moment at least is literally always going to be subsonic because 1: going supersonic includes a massive energy loss+upkeep and 2: air moves very differently above and below the speed of sound so most control surfaces don't work all that great once you start closing in on that pressure barrier and any inherently self-stabilizing geometry is going to be simultaneously super shaky and super hard to get to turn at all _and_ no longer produce lift in quite the same places/proportions.
in short air is basically a different material above and below the speed of sound, so making a supersonic plane basically means designing a multipurpose vehicle which means you're always going to have to make some choices.
having an interceptor that gets up and goes super fast has a purpose (...kinda) but even those will be designed to have their sweet spot for operations at a similar speed to most other non-prop aircraft, so there's surprisingly little difference in the cruising speeds between a boeing 747 and something like a mig.
I'd guess it's at least plausible that forward-edge control surfaces and inherently unstable aerodynamic structures made possible by having an automated system making adjustments in a couple microseconds might make supersonic fighters that actually fight at supersonic speeds a real thing at some point possibly soon but I am by no means an aeronautics engineer currently actively working on just that and thus able to actually weigh in on that thought.
