nice Roger..i purchased another rhodosticum this past weekend and it is just a huge plant covered in blooms. plan to do a video perhaps today of what i bought. I am though perplexed because my previous rhodosticum grew like yours but the one i got doesn't have the same growth pattern..the pseudobulbs are thin but doesn't have that very thin break between the pot and the top of the plant..it's just thin canes although the flower certainly looks like rhodosticum...alexandrae may be my second favorite with johnsoniae remaining at the top of my latouria list...but alexandrae can get rather big and they like the water in summer as the new growths start. You should see blooms soon because it looks very close to blooming size as they can bloom smaller. anyway happy growing

According to what I can find out, Den. alexandrae mainly blooms in Autumn so if I push the new growths on well during the growing season, it should bloom later in the year. Will be interested to see your new Den. rhodostictum too.

that's true...i have two alexandrae and they both bloomed in Autumn into winter as i remember the blooms are long lasting and were still in bloom for our spring show 2 years back...and there is a nice fragrance too.

Hopefully, I should see some blooms late in the year then.

Ditch the plastic pots. Replace them with wooden pots, with holes drilled in it. You can soak the pots in a tub with an inch of water for ten minutes then place to growing spot. repeat soaking as necessary. Orchids are excellent honeybee food as a resource. Vanilla orchids can give you a free source of fresh vanilla flavouring.

I try and look after our bees in the garden with plenty of plants that they like - but if honey bees visit an orchid, they are highly likely to pollinate the bloom and the bloom will then collapse within a day or two so not welcome in the growroom! (not that they can get in there).

My blooms serve a greater purpose than vanity.

Speaking of the devil.... I have a Den samurai which has that antelope shape. It's crossed stratiotes x antennatum. I got it in spike over a year ago and it bloomed. Had two canes no roots. It now has loads of roots the second cane is much taller than the one that was in spike and has put out 6 canes and doesn't seem to be slowing down. Wish it would bloom ♥

These types seem to need fully matured canes and then some 'time' before they bloom but I haven't had mine long enough to establish the pattern yet.

Hello. Watched with a cup of coffee. I think I may have mine planted too deep. It is on it's second blooming and I have not had any new growths. I just do not know if this is normal or not? I like the Roy T because the blooms last forever. Thanks for the update. I hope you are having a great weekend.

My latouria types seem to put on new growths and roots directly after the bloom spikes first bloom begins to fade as summer is ending.

My larger ones seem to be always pushing out new growths but some are young plants and are still a bit slow.

Just ordered a Dendrobium Nora Tokunaga x abberans and a Dendrobium capituliflorum they arrive on Tuesday. Nursery promised to provide little orchid sweaters for the cold

The latourias are my favorites. I have many. Dendrobiums in general are my faves. I just got a D. discolor from Ebay.

    Hi Roger,
What is the exact name of the last plant you showed (the one with the 2 white flowers)?
I would like to get one.
Also, Nora Tokunaga grows like weed, I have Roy Tokunaga. Mr. Tokunaga developed it & named it after his wife. I believe his nursery is in Hawaii.
This plant grows & flowers year round, very easy & tolerant plant!!

That's Den. rhodostictum - one of the best. (I lost mine but would gladly replace it if I could.)

Thank you Roger for the response, sorry you lost yours. Is it finicky? I have to grow my orchids in the garden in LA, it gets too cold & too hot & only 10% humidity, but oncidium seem to do ok.

How did it go with the Nora Tokunaga? I have a blooming sized one since last August but it still hasn't bloomed for me. Plenty of new growths, though. Hope we both get on good terms with them! Greetings from Gran Canaria.
