Thank you all for joining me today on the homestead! If you need links to silica gel packs or an inexpensive but totally functional dehydrator do check the description box for links! I would love to hear about if you all have used Mullein before and what your experiences have been!! 😍
How did you fix the leaves after pouring hot water..did you use leaves, roots or flowers , ? Seeds... Do you add honey, other spice ??? Or what???? Recipe incomplete.
Walking the dog this summer, I passed a beautiful mullein growing right along edge chanelink fence. Causing it to grow like an open hand fan. I remembered a little hippy girl, back in the year 1980, tell me by rubbing mullein blossom and crushed seed bracks on my warts and it would remedy their existance. So!! It works!! I had a pea sized wart on my knee. So everyday, if not evert other day I apply blossom and rub crushed seed bracks on the wart. Sometimes I would put bandaid over the mushed mullein poultice to stay on warr throughout the day. After a week wart started to diminish. Two months through this season the wart is completely gone. Compound W and cryotherapy never succeeded before with my lifelong affliction of the wart virus. THIS REALLY WORKED. Fortunate timing for me to have this plant on my path
I love ❤️ it! I'm going to try this for sure. Another plant that helps with arthritic joints is stinging nettle..really worked for me. Just rub it on. I am used to the tingling effects but one must go easy as some people may develop hives. I had a minor case..but husband pretty severe..even though he's used it before with no problem. So go easy.
Mother Nature gifted me with six new mullein plants this year. Last year, none. I live in an allergen petri dish region so I truly need this plant. Tomorrow is the day to harvest, process, and heal. Thanks for a very nice video.
Since i have no mullein growing on my property, I always look for some mullein on my foraging walks. I bring it home, rinse the leaves and leave on my baking rack on the kitchen counter to air dry until crispy. Then I simply break up the leaves and store in a mason jar. I'll use a teaspoon in a large mug with boiling water when Im very congested. I do use a small mesh strainer to remove the leaves and hairs before drinking. I've never noticed any irritation from the tiny hairs, so I assume that's enough to remove then. Works great!
Mullein is my top medicinal herb. I let it self sow in my veggie garden for easy harvesting in the spring. It is exceptional as a decongestant. The tea is really tasty (my friends agree). I've never found it bitter. To me it tastes like green tea and honey. And definitely filter this tea through a paper filter. The fine hairs on it can irritate.
I appreciate your help with this video. We love the mullein and are growing several. I saw it in the woods and brought it home just because I thought it was pretty and we are now covered up! Thanks for helping me know how to make use of this beautiful plant!
I'm just learning about mullein which grows insanely and wildly through my property. I had read you could only use the leaves off plants that are in flower which seems silly. You seem trustworthy so I'm going to try going by your suggestions and only taking the smaller leaves for tea. So glad I've found your channel today. 😊🌱❤️
Think I've heard the roots can be used for eye wash for sore eyes or piles, makes a good toilet paper. Personally, when I was a kid, I'd hunt the dry mullen stalks, take the sharp edges off and use them as the sticks for my homemade newspaper kites. They were light and flexible enough to work pretty well.
since i never get sick, i use Great Mullein (yes there are other kinds) as a skin tonic with an oil infusion. i work outside in my little orchard all day so to keep my skin from looking my age, i use the oil infusion on my skin after shower. i have used olive oil and sunflower oil before. this is why i don't look as old as i am 🙂 i grow them all over my orchard. they are highly beneficial plants. they improve soil, are favor of pollinators, spikes left over winter feed birds, they provide protection for many beneficial insects, and they inhibit weeds. and there are more medicinal uses for them as well. one of the best plants around 🙂
FWIW, I make mullein tea in our espresso maker. I put a tea bag of some kind tea in the bottom of the little stainless steel coffee holder to filter out any of the fuzz on the leaves and then smash as much dried and crumbled mullein leaf as I can on top of the tea bag in the coffee holder. Then I run just few ounces of water through the espresso maker and then let the mullein steep for a bit, like at least 10 minutes. Then I run a full carafe of water through it to make a full big cup of tea, and I add a teaspoon of raw local honey to it. You can really feel the mullein tea after you drink it. It's a very slight but lovely euphoric feeling. But you really do have to make it like I've described to feel it, or drink about five or more cups of it if you're using tiny tea bags that hold just a teaspoon of tea in them, and that won't taste near as good. Now the most notable thing for both my wife and I about mullein tea is that you'll feel better for a long time after drinking just one big cup like I've described. I'm talking weeks or more. We'll go a month or more without having any and after that at some point we'll realize how much better we felt and make it again. We're pretty lucky to live in a rural area where mullein is abundant. We have 4 huge 1st year plants that sprung up in our garden right now.
I've got a monster mullein growing in my yard. Literally 6'2" and on it's second year, but hasn't started flowering. Just learning about the plant. Now I will definitely try some mullein tea.
Finally got some established around the homestead. I have to move two tiny plants out of the driveway tomorrow. Thanks you for the easy tips. Blessings
I recently saw how muellin works. It's helping my hubby who has cold. Much less coughing! I have quite a few plants on my property.Any other herbs knowledge is welcome and appreciated! Thx!!!
Get while the getting is good! Just be careful about manicured lawns or if they are close to a roadside as you don't need those chemicals or pesticides for sure!
This video made me subscribe, your pretty awesome and helpful. I plan on growing my own but come face to face with it on a day-to-day basis with my work. I'm sure to start harvesting soon.
Any chance you are going to make more medicinal herb videos? I stumbled across this mullein one and then the St John’s Wort one, and I love your style! But there don’t appear to be anymore!
I'll have to go traipsing through our woods in back and see if we have any already growing. Is it something that can be propagated as well? I'm trying to decide on some herbs for next years gardening.
Oh yes!! You can even just buy the seeds commercially as well! The best way to spot a stand of Mullein is to look for the stalks they will likely be pretty brown and dead looking at the moment but they are still quite easy to spot once you know where to look for.
Does Mullein help support or have any benefits if someone has COPD .. and would it interact with any pharmaceutical medications they would be taking like for instance with Afib or heart conditions?
I am afraid it would be unethical of me to dispense this kind of medical advice. I would suggest you seek a naturopathic physician for complex needs. God bless you, I hope you find some respite from your health struggles.
I've searched all over the Internet for specifics about utilizing the ROOT from time of harvest, like the ancients would do. Drying?, do I grind it or mince?, can I add to a random meal preparation to avoid buying gel caps?, nothing to LEARN from. I found a company selling the Mullein capsules of powdered, but not specifying if it's from leaves, roots, combo, but it does mention mg dosage for their product. Not much to LEARN from though. Don't want to blindly just take stuff like this generation does, and FDA says NO to everything that doesn't have a patent. And sadly, I didn't know any 150yr old native Americans to ask either.
I will tell you how I process my echinachea root..it may work for mullien also. After washing..I simmer the cut pieces for 15 minutes. After cooling..put the liquid in small portions to freeze in freezer. I can pop these into a plastic bag and use individual portions as needed. Just warm it up and drink..apply to eye stye.. or wounds..works on poison ivy very nicely. American Indians also would chew pieces of the root. And apply compresses to wounds. I'm sure you can do this decoction with the mullien root also ❤😊
This year my mullein plants decided to grow numerous million stalks with the flowers. I have never seen this before. Quite a few have 4-8 heads on each plant. Does anyone know why this is happening?
Could be that they are just propagating themselves. They are bi-annual plants. First year grows just the leaf and 2nd year they grow stalks and flowers! I think they are very pretty when they flower
Your charming. Unfortunately I never get sick. Should have in the pantry nonetheless, SOMEONE has got to get sick! Lol. Tea is a good idea, I need more tea and should get into beekeeping, honey with tea yum! An interesting experiment is drying mullein outside in the sun with a solar powered fan. The wind probably is a key factor in getting herbs to dry faster. Dehydration packets that change color are wonderful. Shelf life of herbs is related to dryness, so if you have a bottle of herbs and the enclosed silica packet is saturated and no longer absorbing moisture then your eating/ingesting product thats getting old and lost some of its potency. Tinctures in vodka are much better in that they never absorb moisture and lose efficacy, unlike a capsule in a bottle. Vodka (ideally organic) is an extremely important item in the pantry and useful in more ways than one. :)

“The large, less fluffy leaves are less useful medicinally” and “in the first year stage, take only about a third of the leaf matter…” ok, so I think I’ve had this plant for at least a couple years, growing wild out in my blueberry patch. I think I even mowed it down a couple times. This last week was the first time I’d ever heard of Mullein, and it just so happens I’ve been sick with something weird for about a month. A cough, plugged up ears… So I went out and picked a bunch of the biggest leaves, washed them off, spun them, and laid them out to dry. Then I found your video. Should I even bother using these big leaves? I don’t want to pick the rest of the plant now, as I’d like it to keep growing, but I’m fed up with doctor-prescribed remedies that have done nothing to help me, and I want to try some tea. Any advice?
So disrespectful! All living forms deserve respect. Plant and medicine require awareness, understanding, compassion and gratitude. It is, for indigenous cultures, very disrespectful to harvest the whole plant. They have life and cycles as we all do. Taking small sample after asking and offering thanks in some appropriate from is most appropriate . Giving thanks to the Source from which it came.
Girl bye. These are growing every 2 feet on my property it and yarrow are like half my ground cover lol. This was in my garden preventing cultivation for food crops. I live a stones throw from indigenous people and have benefited from guidance by indigenous people. Yes it is important to pay respect to what we receive but literally no one not even the indigenous people I know and love are being precious with medicinal plants growing in the middle of their tomato plant row when there are 46382910 of the plants growing 10' away. What would have been disrespectful would be to just rip it out and toss it in the burn pile. I harvested the whole plant here because it was either that or the rubbish heap. I also discuss mindful harvesting in this video. Did you even watch the whole thing or are you just a hater?
I have a few of these near my office on the roadside. There is one plant that is massive with long leaves and taller than myself. Is a large plant like that ok to harvest from or are the smaller ones more desirable?

How did you fix the leaves after pouring hot water..did you use leaves, roots or flowers , ? Seeds... Do you add honey, other spice ??? Or what???? Recipe incomplete.
Don’t forget, you can smoke it! I know it sounds counterintuitive, but smoking Mullen clears out mucus.
Don't forget to stain it through a coffee filter!! The hairs can irritate your throat
Strain
Absolutely, strain this
Definitely my throat was irritated when I pulled them out of the ground 😅
Love how all of this could literally cost nothing, especially when you reuse a jar! Reusing a cute candle jar is an especially great idea ♥

To the point and easy to watch, didn't even need to speed it up or skip anything!
I am only here because my phone spies on me, and this plant was on the radio earlier !
My grandaddy told me his aunt would boil the leaves for a few mins and wrap the leaves around a joint that was hurting from arthritis.
So go easy.
People do this with nettles too! The sting supposedly alleviates symptoms of arthritis
Mullen is really good to soothe the throat, Relieves dry cough, very soothing
Mother Nature gifted me with six new mullein plants this year. Last year, none. I live in an allergen petri dish region so I truly need this plant. Tomorrow is the day to harvest, process, and heal. Thanks for a very nice video.
Thank you for helping me I found a bullet plant and I'm transplanting it in my yard
Interesting entry on Wikipedia for Joseph E. Meyer. He was a botanist and founder of the Indiana Botanic Gardens.
Can anyone suggest the best book for mullein from harvesting to recipes? Once off grid the internet will e of no use. Thanks!!
Since i have no mullein growing on my property, I always look for some mullein on my foraging walks. Do not harvest mullen close to high ways. Just a helpful hint. Could have absorbed some bad contaminates

very informative video on mullen. thanks
I just found Mullein in my yard and now I found your channel. Ty so much for this info!!! New sub.. great job!!
Thank you!
Thank you…very helpful 🙏🏻🦋💕
Thanks, lot of knowledge shared! as a smoker and gardener im going to come to appreciate this plant which I thought was a weed.
I just pulled some up the other day. 😐

Any time! Thanks for stopping by and saying hi 🥰
I recently saw how muellin works. It's helping my hubby who has cold. Much less coughing! I have quite a few plants on my property.Any other herbs knowledge is welcome and appreciated! Thx!!!
Do you have a video on how to use the flower please?
Nice.. thank you!
There's tons of it in the field next to my apartment complex!
Get while the getting is good! Just be careful about manicured lawns or if they are close to a roadside as you don't need those chemicals or pesticides for sure!
Thank you so much for this wonderful information!
Gonna nickname you DOc.😊
Very helpful. Thank you. 🇬🇧
This video made me subscribe, your pretty awesome and helpful. I plan on growing my own but come face to face with it on a day-to-day basis with my work. I'm sure to start harvesting soon.
I mask the flavor with decaf chai tea and honey for my teens to drink it
Thank you
I've become very fond of Mullen the last couple years. I haven't found it to be bitter at all.
thank you very munch
Have you ever tried to use the root of the plant as a tincture for pain?
Any chance you are going to make more medicinal herb videos? I stumbled across this mullein one and then the St John’s Wort one, and I love your style! But there don’t appear to be anymore!
Life has been crazy and I have taken a long hiatus. It's been hard to figure out how to come back but I do hope to this spring 💕
Could you strain the hairs and dehydrate them? Then, use it to cook with?
I'll have to go traipsing through our woods in back and see if we have any already growing. Is it something that can be propagated as well? I'm trying to decide on some herbs for next years gardening.
Oh yes!! You can even just buy the seeds commercially as well! The best way to spot a stand of Mullein is to look for the stalks they will likely be pretty brown and dead looking at the moment but they are still quite easy to spot once you know where to look for.
How long does the dry herb last in the jar?
Hi! Do you strain the tea as well or just drink all?
I have heard that some people are sensitive to the little hairs on the leaves so it a good idea to strain it in a coffee filter or fine mesh.
You can use mullein oil as drops in the ears for an ear ache. The flowers are used, to make the oil I am looking for how to make it.
I haven't had cause to make that myself. I heard it works a treat though!
Can I still use the flowers if they have dried out
We dehydrate the flowers for use the rest of the year. Works
No one is talking about smoking the plant. I have it in my herbal smoke blend!
Does Mullein help support or have any benefits if someone has COPD .. and would it interact with any pharmaceutical medications they would be taking like for instance with Afib or heart conditions?

I only wish if you could give me some seeds of this plant. As I’m have been looking high n low for this plant
How long does Mullen last dry before it's no good?
what about a Mullein Tincture?
does the smell irritate the throat when in the oven
Where I am at I used to spray this with herbicide to kill it when I worked for the Forest Service because I was required to. Now I leave it alone 😂
Do you wash your Mullen before dehydrating it to use in teas?
Sure
How do we get Mullins to spread
All are similar but thepantwith me the flower is white and the taste is very bitter ,Is it mullein??Reply please
I tried to dry mine in the oven on a low temp but I think I over did it? It’s brown. No light green at all. Does that mean it’s no good now?

I have seen pictures of Mullien with multiple stalks…l believe they call it Great Mullien and l have ordered some seeds.
You didn't mention smoking the leafs..?

Your charming. Unfortunately I never get sick. Should have in the pantry nonetheless, SOMEONE has got to get sick! Lol. WHAT ABOUT RINSING OR WASHING THE MULLEIN? MINE IS MUDDY
I washed it off and used my salad spinner.
A stunning example of hotness.! I could help you put your mullein to use for your throat issues.😂😂😂
Can you smoke it?
Yes.
Why is mullein not a listed ingredient in mullein gummies???
Could be listed under a scientific name or, could be a bad product. The supplement industry is full of all sorts of nonsense.
The book didn't talk about smoking it.
good for fishing as well,, just do not get caught doing it
💖🪴💖I dug one up from the backyard of a subsidized housing establishment, asking permission of course, because it was there all alone in a patch of grass like a weed, and I I had the agreement. Unfortunately my scientific test of chilling it in the refrigerator for a whole day caused it to die. Yet they do that in florists with flowers. I loved touching its velvet leaves. I have used the large leaves, dried or fresh as a tea with good results. I choose leaves without blemishes or discolourations.
Did the mullien help you?
Can I smoke it
Many people do. But be careful if you choose to do that and do your research!
And the day I go to get it growing on the side of the road, some idiot mowed it down
I wouldn’t store medicine in a candle jar that was used with scented candles from the store.
You didn't say anything about the roots
Am i hearing a slight Canadian accent? Mother is Canadian?
Washingtonian 😅 close enough to Canada there is probably some bleed over in accent.
