I really love the show when it's about a bass! I am so glad that I have an exposed truss rod on my home assembled jazz. The neck does seem to be needing adjustment fairly often and it sure is a lot easier if it's playable when I adjust it to get it just right. I notice the string tension feel gets just beautiful as I reach the right height, so I don't measure with a ruler. The bass just seems to come alive.
I have a 1990 but it’s two tone sunburst with white pickguard that I bought about 6 years ago. Earlier I had a butterscotch one with black pickguard that I bought new and later sold but can’t remember the approximate time I bought it, maybe late ‘90’s. On the one I had now I replaced the stock metal saddles with fiber ones made to replicate the original ones; have it set up with flats and absolutely love it.
Thank you Dave. We needed one of these videos really bad. I played one of those exact models late last year, early this year. It was a pre-owned one at a Guitar Center in the Los Angeles area and instantly fell in love with it. My only complaint though is that Truss Rod design requires the tech to take off the neck which drives me up a wall knowing those screw holes are being eroded over and over again when it is setup. It would be nice if they could one of those wheels on the truss rod to be able to directly adjust it. There are some really great aftermarket pickups for it too if you want to humbucker the sound which on that particular model imho sounds really good. Unfortunately, money was and is still super tight, so couldn't do it. Sorry for the ramble, keep them coming Dave we appreciate it.
Loved to see you work on "my" bass. I have 2006 in the gig bag, it's my play out favorite. I've sacrificed some vintage vibe to make it a little more user friendly: I filed a tapered slot into the pickguard that allows neck adjustment without removing the neck, the slot is black and doesn't show, I switched the bridge to a Badass that I had on hand and replaced the jack with an Electrosocket. The flats will never come off unless they break.
Have the same issue using standard length strings on my T40 Peavey which is also string-through body and always end up trimming the felt to get it to clear the nut cleanly.
I LOVE string-through basses..... but many times, the silk windings of standard long-scale strings will sit over the nut, and extra-long scale strings are not easy to find in stores, nor available in every model.
@@DavesWorldofFunStuff and, I am retiring at the end of the year. And you Sir have inspired me to pick up a Bass and spend some newly unoccupied time learning how to play it. At the very least it will hopefully keep my fingers nimble in my old age! Any recommendations for my first bass? Rickys are a bit out of my price range....say $500.00 US...
What happened to the Dave "Guideline" we heard so often that the saddles have to be parallel to the body, ie not canted? Logic dictates that with a radiused neck, the inner strings will need to be set higher to follow the curve, as is the case here.
I like that style of bass but I really don't like the single coil that much, I have a compromise a Fender tele p bass similar but is has the split coil
I hate them damn reverse tuners, they came on my 50's reissue P-Bass, so I ordered normal ones from Stew Mac, and they worked perfect. no changing the hole diameters. ( Schallers ).
@@jimbucket2996 did a bit of searching and some info does come up. “Made in” is definitely Fuji-gen up to 1996 when the contract was switched over to Tokai from 97 - 2007. Where there is some confusion is another maker Dyna Gakki also made some for Fender from 1992 and these were also stamped “Crafted” which is also what is stamped on all the Tokai built.
I worked on a Harley Benton version of a '51 P a few months back. I loved it so much that I want one for myself - plus, I still kick myself in my ever-expanding ass for not buying one about 20 years ago when they were going for about 500 to 600 bucks new! I'm also missing my old screenname, WannaBeatle on here (I got a permanent ban from Google a couple weeks ago for replying to a right-wing nut/bot on a youtube vid and you CAN'T fight it, either even though I got the ban and the other person didn't).
if anyone is interested i have a beautiful 1996 "foto flame" p-bass for sale. no play time and no cracking. few small nicks and a scratched knob from bad storage is about it....
I've never seen this version of a p bass but I guess it works. I have a 78 black pass with rosewood fretboard. I bought it only to teach our bass player his parts as I was lead guitarist playing les Paul's. Fender should be shot for having to take neck off to adjust neck. Stupid design to say the least. Course it's a fender where stupid is as stupid does
This is the first iteration of the P Bass which came out in 1951. When Fender changed the design to the better known P Bass with the hum cancelling pickups in 1957, this design was retired until 1968 when it was rechristened Telecaster Bass; around ‘72 it went to a humbucker pickup and later was discontinued. Fender Japan brought the reissue back around 1990 until the 2000’s. Now the Custom Shop sells their version for about $4K or you can get a Squier Classic Vibe Series for a whole lot less. I believe the Fender Japan versions are no longer available.
I personally play bass with a glove on to preserve the strings even longer, have you ever thought about that? I think it'd be totally reasonable to jam out on one track, especially with a glove or gloves.
Hey, I want the sticker, sent the money, didn't see the lines for address, email me for my address, eh? thanks Dave, Fun Stuff!! Give my regards to Orillia!
Man, Fender really nailed it with that butterscotch colour. Classic

The Loop WLUP FM 98, 97.9 on the digital tuner, that tee is a classic. Wish mine still fit. That was about 50 lbs ago!!!

The Telecaster bass is beatiful
Dave you really need to test play the basses you work on for your customers!! You need to jam out at the blues jam!!!!
I have a 1991. I refinned it Fiesta red with matching headstock. have had it 20 years
I’ve said it before, the T-Shirt rocks!
Love whenever you wear the the WLUP shirt. I've lived in northwest Indiana my whole life. I miss the Loop.
I just love the way these basses look. I'll probably get one some day.
Nice looking bass. Definitely like that old 50's style body.
I have exactly the same bass.
Mango yellow precision.
Beautiful thing!!

these work..just need a tweak
That is one incredibly handsome bass.
I know people love the "mojo" of those 2 saddle bridges but if I owned one of those I'd definitely fit a standard Fender style bridge
Nice slab reissue!
Love to see the Loop logo.
Dave you really need to make a video of your band at a gig!!!!
A simple beautiful Bass! The one that I want. Thanks! 😎
Dave I loved the youtube Luke and the Apostles show. Nice work. Im sure your proud.
Thank you kindly

I think if its "Crafted in Japan" its made by Tokai? "Made in Japan" is Fuji-gen.
Oh, I love Tokai stuff. Especially when found in pawn shops! Often they are nicely priced there.
I think it happened in a certain year. They just changed the phrase.

It should so have flats on it. It’s old school!
Live them like that; mine is set up like that.
I hate that reverb is pretty massively inflating price of these basses right now when you can get one direct from Japan on eBay for close to retail.
I think the best way to stretch strings is to play the guitar.
So is this basically a "telecaster-like" version of a true P-bass? Looks like it.
Actually is a reissue of the first iteration of the P Bass from 1951. This model was brought back in 1968 and given the name Telecaster Bass.
Isn't the pickup in a wonky place? Neither treble nor rhythm?
Just because the slots on the nut make an X shape, doesn't mean it takes a phillips screwdriver. Guarantee that's what someone did.
Probably used a butter-knife on the truss rod nut.
👍👍👍
why is that radius so steep on the bridge? should be a 9.5 must be how the player prefers it prolly used to play a cello... lol spacing too.. odd
string height is correct..you look too deep
Had Bruce Springsteen been a bass player.
Like deployed 👍
