Just a note: If this is the same model as mine (Fender Japan OPB 51-95 SD) released in 1995, the pickup is already a Seymour Duncan. The 'SD' in the model name stands for 'Seymour Duncan'. Not sure what they put in them these days. I'm happy with mine. Another great video, Dave! Thanks for what you do!

I also installed a Seymour D. (quarter pounder) in my 51 reissue. So much hotter than the oem pickup. Outstanding for punk/alt/garage band tunes.

With these bases, Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound is the best pickup, purely because the larger pole pieces give a more even signal.
When it comes to upgrades on this one I would've scrapped all the wiring. Might as well put in an orange drop, cloth wiring, CTS pots and Switchcraft jack (and pickup selector, if there are one) when the soldering iron is out anyways. That's all up to the owner though, Dave does an awesome job as always

sorry.it really makes no difference to the electrons..they don't see the orange..only you

@@DavesWorldofFunStuff true, but I'm under the impression that the small "dime-sized" pots tend to feel a bit flimsy and have a narrower adjustment sweep (nothing happens until about 3/4 and then you reach max volume at 8/9). I've also expressed the shaft breaking loose inside the potentiometer, without getting abused, I might add.
All that being said, it's just my experience and opinion. And again, it's all up to the customer.
Keep up the good work Dave, love your stuff

Watching Dave work on this bass I was reminded of my mother's 1950's blonde bedroom furniture set and then wondered if it's popularity at the time was the reason Leo chose it for his Tele and P-bass. Does Dave know?

You could skip the twisted-pair routine if you backed that big pickguard with some copper foil -- the 3M tape with the conductive adhesive is great for that -- and grounded the copper via the control plate.

I had a similar issue with pickups on an old Jackson superstratish body recently. Id had it laying around for decades. I introduced it to my bandsaw and created a Musiclander inspired type body. Then did a massively pain in the ass holo-glitter paint job. Then it came time for pickups. Id been saving a set of 90's Fender pickups and a Blues Breaker for the neck. Easy peasy right? WRONG! Not only would they not fit, NOTHING l had in my parts bins would fit. Not even friggin close! I have NO F**KING IDEA what they had in there originally. But NOTHING even teased me that it might just drop in. I know, l know l should have checked first before l do a refinish that took over two months... But WTF?! Nothing fits?! You kinda grow to expect industry standardization to SOME degree!
After pulling my hair out for another week, l just finally said F**k it. Because l didnt want to risk the finish, l went the opposite direction you went here. I desoldered the leads to the pickups and took the Dremel to the base of the pickup bobbins. Then resoldered the leads and had to hot glue the leads to the base of the pickups to prevent them getting jostled about. All's well that ends well. But what a complete PITA. Lesson learned... Dont ever expect anything to go as planned when repairing or modding a guitar.
I still have NO idea what was it that guitar when it left the factory. Look at it " Oh those are just standard Fender single coil cavities".
Nope. No sir they are not!
