I have the distinction of being a first time tourist in Japan who braved and conquered Tokyo subway in one try. But I almost lost that distinction right there in Ueno. I was a step away into a train going to Saitama instead of riding the Yamanote line. Good thing I read the sign and ask assistance from a rail personnel. Got to my destination safely. If not for his help, who knows what prefecture where I might have been.

When I first arrived to Tokyo from Narita I had to transfer from Keisei airport train to subway to get to my hotel. So Ueno was my first local station. I felt so lost in this maze of low corridors with so many platforms and tracks. Though I have to say Shinjuku station is even more of a maze. At one point it took me about half hour to find my way from entrance to train tracks.

Travel tip: when I was returning from Kyoto, my last few days in Tokyo were in a Ueno hotel. So after disembarking the the Tokaido Shinkansen, I stayed on the Shinkansen level within Tokyo Station, and entered into the Tohoku Shinkansen waiting area. The Tohoku Shinkansen brought me to Ueno directly, no other stops. This is better than exiting and going up 4 levels onto the Yamanote platform to get to Ueno, especially if it is during rush hour, and you have luggage bags.

Had a very nice walk from Ueno Station when we were in Tokyo. We went into the park, then through the beautiful Yanaka neighborhood and the cemetery all the way to Nippori Station. We had a nice lunch in a local yazakaya close to the station and then back to Ginza. Probably one of my favorite days in Tokyo

@@furinkazan4464 Ekiben are designed to help enjoy the train journey more. ekiben shops at train stations make them thematic in some way such as by using local produce that their region is famous for, or by shaping the (edible) decorations inside in the form of local sights. Or making the whole box train shaped, itself. It is a more special experience than standard conbini bento.
The idea is that you sit in your train, eat your delicious Ekiben and think about the places you visited.

I didn't know you could get a platform ticket. Well that explains something. I use the route finder machine near the ticket machines. Get a printout of train, track and time and enter the turnstiles to the track. If my train doesn't come to the minute, I don't get on. Afraid I'll get on the wrong train. I go back out to the route finder for a new printout. However the turnstiles don't let me out. I have to go to the attendant.

Must ask, why is the map at 1:25 reversed. Most maps start out with north on the top with south on the bottom. Having a map going from south (on top) to north (toward the bottom) can easily get some people lost if they do not notice it. At least if they do that they should also print a north to south compass symbol.
