I've become hesitant to remove much lower growth at that age (the little one you're using for the demo), as lower branches help the main trunk thicken as the tree continues to grow. I love the look of the established bonsai shown at the beginning, but it looks like some reverse taper is in its not so distant future 😮😢
Thanks for checking out the video. You're right about removing the lower branches... the aftercare section discusses letting them grow out long until the trunk is thick enough... then using them for jin. The older tree's trunk may look denser in those twisty parts... if it gets too out of proportion it can be corrected a few ways, enhance the shari to minimize the swelling living tissue is one way to reduce the feeling of a reverse taper... another would be to damage the lower part by the roots to encourage some swelling... and another would be to plant it in the ground for 2-3 years... as well as air layering higher up if it gets too extreme! Shifting attention from faults is part of designing a bonsai, as well as shifting priorities when the time comes for a change as it grows. Your keen eye identifying a potential change should be commended! I try to measure the pros and cons against how much enjoyment I receive from any given tree... a couple of millimeters in width difference ain't gonna rain on this 'lil tree's parade right now. Cheers!
PS: if you only knew some of the painful blunders I've faced the past 2 seasons and how hard I sometimes have to focus on shifting my focus from the faults I've created ... one of which being on a tree that is over 50 years old, and has been in my care for more than 30. Oh, man .... undoing that many years of work on one alcohol fueled night when I got a "wonderful" idea . . . . . .
