  • It’s one of the most famous stories in railroad history, and three of the men who were part of The Great Locomotive Chase are buried in Atlanta’s historic Oakland Cemetery.

Very informative. I like the way you link the railroad’s role to history. They are critical to our country’s development.

I hope those flags are still flying. Its to honor and represent all those soldiers who laid down their lives on the field of battle

Thank you for doing all these videos for us. I especially like this one because it tells a very commemorative moment in the railroads history. And i tip my hat to all the union and confederate soldiers who fought in the civil war.

I could be wrong but I believe Fuller actually lived long enough to see the Texas preserved even had a hand in helping get the campaign going to save it before his death

The cemetery also has a monument commemorating the location where 7 of the raiders were hanged.

The actual site is just across Memorial Drive. They were buried in the cemetery near the marker but were relocated to the national cemetery in Chattanooga after the war.

Unfortunately, at the time that the Andrew's Raiders sold the General, the colors of the Western and Atlantic Railroad were Green with orange trim. Not red and black. The Texas was in the Atlanta Cyclorama and is painted the correct colors. If they had not delayed the raid by a day, they and General Mitchell may have pulled the whole thing off, and shorted the war. With no battles of Stone's River, Chickamauga or Lookout Mnt/Missionary Ridge...

I haven't lived around Atlanta in years, but is the Cyclorama still in existence? Wasn't the locomotive "Texas" on display there for years? Disney's Wonderful World of Color reenacted the Great Locomotive Chase on NBC sometime in the early to mid '60's.

The locomotive and Cyclorama are now at the Atlanta History Center.

Does that confederate flag still fly over its fallen comrades?
