  • I dreaded this part, but quickly found out that you don't ACTUALLY have to be a genius to cut planks into the right shape. It does take, as you will see in this nerdy video, patience and attention.

I use a 2:1 epoxy system much like this one: amzn.to/3Rqg65q
my fiskars axe is the norden N7, great for carpentry. currently unavailable, but they do have this one: amzn.to/3Znjf9h
I used a cheap electric saw all throughout the project, which lead to all these sloppy cuts, only to see my wife buy one like this: amzn.to/3JhrL3Y
right after I finished, because she wanted to build a letter box.
This video covers the part of the process of building a viking ship, or faering, where you allready have a keel and stems in the shape you want, and then need to work the planks for the hull against is. The interior is built after that phase. Boat building for amateurs is not as difficult as I thought, but you need to keep a very flexible mind and be able to adapt as you go along. In this case that is totally happening, as I figured out a better way to figure out the plank shape somewhere between the first and second plank. Also it is of great importance that the boat does not get a straight middle, with two curved ends, but instead has a continuous curve on every strake. This is what makes this boat type so good to look at and also work so well. This was a real struggle for the middle part of the boat on the fourth plank (counted from the bottom), that I used for demonstration. In the end I was very happy with the result, but: I came out a lot lower in the middle than I had thought. This will have to be fixed in the next plank, the first one that officially qualifies as side plank and not bottom plank.
The music you hear in the "intermezzos" or maybe even "intermezzi" is me (papa hiker) on acoustic bass, irish bouzouki (tuned GgDdaaee) and tenor mandola. I record with Audacity (using just the microphone on my laptop, which is why you hear the chickens in the background) which is a bit of a learning process. It'l get better in the future. The song has no name yet.

      Thank you Daniel,
I think it's a pretty unique project, but sadly not all that many views yet :-) Nice to know that you appreciate it.
