People in general, and Claris, in particular should be listening to RC. Here's someone with arguably the top corporate company in the Filemaker Pro universe, giving away the most complex and together business template for FREE and is thriving, despite Claris's stained soil of a crappy business model. Filemaker Pro, should be FREE for a single user, permanently. With decently priced combo and networking offers. Other wise, and meaning as of now, Filemaker Pro is on life support. Freemium a word used by Claris for charging anyway and pretending not to. "Never buy Claris" sums up this whole video for me. Imagine 900 dollars for 5 seats for one year. Holy Shite! Microsoft, provides their full suite of actual programs that do everything (including Access on the PC) for $99 for 5 computers. The more I hear about this the worse this whole forked up idea becomes, unbelievable. and no one loves or values Filemaker Pro more than me. Heartbreaking!
Thank you Richard for this video which explains all crystal clear. All must be very confusing for most FM users since, as you rightly pointed out, Claris has not updated their website and still using terms as Claris Filemaker Pro, Filemaker Pro, Claris Pro. I believe they should have kept Filemaker and include any new stuff under one umbrella. FM Connect is good example where things have gone wrong. Talking about simple software but having now more then 10 software products to choose from is not clear for new users. Quite happy to pay for licenses but based on concurrent connections if necessary , to protect Claris's income stream, linked to a runtime version. Back to simple software, how about say 3 preference options for users ie. beginners/medium/advanced development menus. Saw a demo by Claris claiming to perform a job in 5 minutes in Claris Studio instead of 1 hour in Filemaker Pro. This is absolutely bollocks, any software requires time to learn. I could make another video which shows 20 lines of code written in 1 minute, beating their 5 minutes, but it took me weeks to finally figure it out how to do it! I really love Filemaker but this new change will create a lot of work/problems for new features which simply could have been added to new Filemaker versions. I can already 'talk' with Filemaker to NoSQL stuff if required.
RC mentioned in the video about some of the reasons people should upgrade their FileMaker Pro. Whilst he makes some good points, we disagree on one of his explanations. He claims that the reason why Apple, Inc. (through the old subsidiary name of FileMaker Inc. before it became Claris Inc.) removed the Instant Web Publishing (IWP) in the pre-FileMaker Pro 16 era was because of security issues. Hence the decision from FileMaker, Inc. to remove the IWP feature altogether. This is not entirely true. Just as we see in any software today (including macOS), Apple will make the effort to fix any security issue when it is brought to its attention and enough people are aware of it and/or the seriousness of the security issue is made evident to the company. It would have been no different with FileMaker Pro when it had IWP. Sure, removing IWP will help to remove all security issues relating to IWP. This is the "throwing the baby out with the bathwater" approach. However, we all know how useful and valuable the baby was (i.e., IWP). In fact, it was too valuable to a number of Filemaker users, so much so that FileMaker, Inc. reduced the number of concurrent users accessing FileMaker databases via a network from 8 to 5. That reduction had nothing to do with a security problem. That's just to encourage users to see the value of purchasing FileMaker Server. And when that wasn't making enough difference to the bottom line of the company and saw how many small businesses were using FileMaker Pro as a mini server using IWP, FileMaker, Inc. removed IWP altogether. If that wasn't enough, why not remove the Runtime feature to prevent too many people running a ready-made database for free as an app as created by FileMaker developers and so reduce competition from third-party developers with Apple's own free OS products (e.g., contacts.app, music.app, photo.app etc) which serves a purpose for Apple? But hold on! We hear FileMaker Go is free and is an alternative Runtime app (without the ability to run plug-ins). So why retain FileMaker Go on iOS and keep it free? It is because Apple wants to make extra profit in selling iOS devices. Just as the company tried to increase the sales of FileMaker Server, making FileMaker Go free was the company's way of enticing users to buy more Apple products. If this isn't true, then why don't we have FileMaker Go on macOS, Windows, Linux, and Android? In which case, Claris can have its Claris Pro and subscription-based model, and everyone else with a database file can run it for free as a single user to do as they wish with it. But no, there is no interest from company executives to do such a thing. We are flabbergasted. No, it is not a security issue that saw certain key and useful features disappear. It is simply the fact that Apple realised FileMaker Pro was too good of a product to maintain as is, or at least be modernised with new features and functions. It wants to make as much profit as it can, and the profit it was already making was not enough. Now users have to face a much higher licensing cost while paying annually through a subscription-based model . There is nothing wrong with the idea of upgrading FileMaker Pro to whatever Claris wants to do with it today. All users ask is to make sure that we can still run our own database files offline and without restrictions (including running plug-ins). Users should not have to login to an account online to run a simple app that gives access to their own databases,
Hi Sunrise, I think there is some confusion. At no time did I mention or discuss "Instant Web Publish" or "IWP". That technology was replaced by WebDirect which is vastly better. In fact, I don't really talk about WebDirect either because it isn't really isn't changing, etc. What I did mention, is that "Shared Hosting" was legally removed (a while back) from the allowable use, as provided by the legal license. Shared Hosting is when two or more organizations share the SAME FileMaker Server. The shared hosting makes for a tricky situation, because it is absolutely a security issue. If one of the parties dislikes the other party, they can launch a Denial of Service Attack on the server, and effectively cause the server to shut down. That's why each organization needs to use their OWN FileMaker Server. In terms of the "Off-Line use" of Claris Server, this is absolutely a limitation that must be fixed for a large number of users to move to the new platform. If you feel this limitation is a major issue, then you should DIRECTLY COMMUNICATE your feelings to Claris management. I agree with the need for this. I am not Claris management. I am just the guy who tries to clearly explain, what they are doing. I think the price sensitivity will become less as Claris delivers more high value with Claris Studio and Claris Connect. We are not there yet, so a lot of developers are unhappy. I totally understand that. Again, feel free to communicate this directly to Claris. I seriously doubt their CEO, or VP's will ever read these comments. So Feel free to redirect them via email. - Richard
@@FileMakerVideos Thank you for the clarification. If it is to do with FileMaker Server and there was a risk of sharing FileMaker databases with two or more distinct organisations (i.e., not part of the same group), and one organisation gets disgruntled in any way with the other, then yes, it is possible to achieve the security threat as you say with the server. Indeed, any web site would have a similar security problem too. We are not sure how common the practice of sharing databases with multiple organisations was. There are FileMaker Server web sharing sites available as a service and technically a database shared with one organisation is unlikely to be accessible to another. But if any access is possible and there is a DoS attach done by one organisation, that organisation would quickly lose any sharing rights for its own databases with the hosting company in question. We think it is unlikely an organisation would do such a thing and risk damaging their own brand and reputation, assuming the organisation is of any quality in the business world. If there had been such sharing taking place, it appears to be because the cost of FileMaker Server for the number of users they wanted to access on a concurrent basis - it would have been very costly and hence the likely reason there was sharing taking place. It was probably in response to the loss of IWP that led to this unfortunate situation in the first place. Thank you for your explanations and letting us know where we are at in relation to the latest upcoming changes from Claris. Always entertaining.

If it is so poweful but their user base is reistant to it, it is either too complicated or they are building tools their users do not want.
