Only played 1st edition and this seems like a different game (iirc). I remember much more interaction, flying around planets, just a good experience. I enjoy Star Trek, kind of, but I remember 1st ed being a good game
First Edition is absolutely the better game. They made 2E because they felt 1E was getting too unwieldy with so many card types and mechanics. Clearly they aren't WOTC (how many keywords does MTG have?). 2E was dead on arrival. It was not well-received.
I never played 2nd Edition but 1st Edition is what started my brother and I off playing these CCGs of the 90's. I came home one day to him playing with his friends and it really got me down the STCCG, SWCCG, and Magic rabbit holes. I collect the MECCG also now but haven't ever played it, really enjoy the art. Boxes of all these games is getting so expensive :(
YMMV. I played and loved 1st Edition almost to its end, then I took a break for 10 years and came back to find 1st Edition completely ungrokkable and 2e became my new home.
@@fm1102 1st Edition feels and plays much more like Star Trek. 2nd Edition feels much more like a game where the theme was pasted on and you're playing next another player rather than against them...where your interaction with the other player is almost entirely from your dilemma pile - that's it. And don't even get me started on how they nerfed the Borg. In 1st Edition, a Borg cube felt like a real threat where it would take a fleet of ships - well armed ones - just even begin fighting one. In 2nd Edition...one or two ships is all you really needed. Bottom line...yes, 2nd Edition is more accessible for new players, but at the cost of theme and player interaction.
I am a First Edition snob, and i absolutely agree they should hit 1E up if they can. I also think 2e plays better when compared to newer tcg/ccg mechanic structures and would be more accessible to newer audiences.
I only played a couple of games of first edition but I remember it being much more interesting than what I just watched. Also, despite working in an flgs during the early to mid 2000s (well, the attached bookshop, mostly) I don't remember ever seeing the 2nd edition of Star Trek.
The first edition of this is what got me into CCGs. I walked past a comic shop and they had the DS9 starter in the window. I went in and stumbled through buying it. I collected the game until it died but never came across anyone else who played. After seeing this I'm not sure I would have got into gaming if I had played the game.
You would've had an even worse experience if you tried the 1e starters. Remember that garbage? Anyway, your introduction with a friend teaching you is apples to oranges with a game played with just the 2e starters.
Starters where bad but if you got a booster box and built some decks you would have better games. But great comments on the game and always quality content and discussion.
Thanks for this. Didn't even know there was a second edition of this game. I yearned to play 1st ed back in the day, but everyone was collecting it, nobody was playing it. But please, DO play the 1st edition. I've just watched your Star Wars CCG stream and you talk about how it really feels like the source material, and 1st edition Star Trek really is the closer equivalent. This 2nd edition is certainly a game... but it's not a "Trek, but with cards" experience like the 1st ed was. Yes it was clunky, but the one linear group of planets, with 3 dilemmas seeded to each one, which could be overcome in phases and with the chance of player interaction, means it has more of a "problem for the away team to solve" feel than this throwing down a pile of recycled dilemmas has.

Please play the first edition! It's the vastly superior game and there's still an active fanbase creating new sets.

I honestly believe that if you guys played 1st Edition, it would grip you guys a lot more. You'll need to try 1st Edition

Would disagree 1st Ed is broken and not fun.
@@CrimsonEnvec Disagree, but to each his own.

Guys please cover an EPIC card game session! We would love to see you dark drafting that game.
LOL shoutout to South Africa! Thanks guys. We totally are playing STCCG here :).
There are a lot more ways - and a lot easier ways - to interact with your opponent than just dilemmas in 1st Edition.

The crunchy nose people are the Bajoran's from Deep Space Nine... well, they are one of the many possible species with crunchy noses. :)

Nice, new Throwback! I don't really watched ST, but every throwbacks is a welcome one!
Thanks for covering ST CCG!
Think you guys will try the 1st edition btw?

1e was more like Netrunner, with each location analogous to a server. And I guess that would make personnel icebreaker analogues.
Still hoping for a four player throwback Thursday for babylon 5 ccg
Dang.. 1st edition was way better then 2nd
Some sleight of hand at 18:20!!
nice video making me get my old cards out
Can you provide advice on building a Klingon deck? Also can 1st & 2nd Ed. intermingle during sanctioned play?
Hey Darrell, we can't. Maybe someone who watches this can, or you could try asking in our Discord: cov.link/discord
TKY for the info & contact link
You always just have it forever to kill me forever!? :D

Would love to see Highlander tcg.
