This might be because my relationship with the Guilty Gear franchise has been a bit from an arm’s length, as I’ve never actually played the games and am only vaguely familiar with the games’ lore, but it felt a bit to me like the announcement of Bridget being trans came a bit out of left field and very much a “We say Bridget’s trans because we’re looking for brownie points”. Now, I’m very much aware that I might be completely wrong, and I openly and humbly ask that anyone who cares to give me information or a timeline of Bridget’s history to please do so, I very much want to be educated on the full story. But here’s what I thought I understood about Bridget’s story; Bridget was born in a village that had a very extreme superstition. They believed that when twins were born, opposite sex twins were a good omen while same sex twins were a curse and must be killed. When Bridget and his (at the time he was a he so I’m using that pronoun for this stage of the story) brother were born, their parents feared that the villagers would kill them both, so they gave Bridget to a nunnery to pretend to be a girl, to protect him. For the longest time through the franchise, Bridget would adamantly reject being referred to as a female, trying to claim he was a man and a very manly one at that. Like I say, my familiarity with the lore is extremely vague, so I’m open to learning more about the journey Bridget goes on to accept themselves as trans, and I hope to be able to get the full series of games to play through them at some point
You're missing one key point. Bridget actually didn't mind living as a girl, but she knew that her parents felt guilty because they thought they were forcing it on her. So she specifically began referring to herself as a boy at the same time she started doing work to earn money for her village because she wanted to prove the curse about having twin sons wrong, that way her parents could be happy. And as a trans person who was closeted for 30 years, I can speak from experience when I say that you can be in denial for a LONG time. You can convince yourself that you're something that you're not, either out of fear of consequences or a sense of responsibility, but on some fundamental level you know something is wrong, and you're not happy. And that's what Bridget's storyline in Strive, as well as her theme song "The Town Inside Me", are about. Another thing to keep in mind is that Guilty Gear, like a lot of things, got it's start when LGBT characters were frowned upon. There are many instances, from games to books to comics, where characters were meant to be LGBT, but were censored or rewritten because of the time they were created in, and only in recent years are allowed to be what they were meant to be. Just look at the kerfuffle that was Poison from Final Fight. Hell, Mystique and Destiny from X-Men were revealed to have been lovers after Destiny's death because of the "kill your gays" thing, and yet veteran X-Men writer Chris Claremont stated that the original plan was for them to be Nightcrawler's biological parents, with Mystique as the father. There are definitely cases where companies will make a formerly cishet character LGBT for brownie points, just look at what Disney did with Beauty and the Beast, but more often than not what you actually get is a case of "this is what we wanted to do from the beginning, but we weren't allowed to do it until now." And I found out that she actually *did* dispel her village’s outdated belief and I learned a lot more about her personal journey, so I’m glad I kept an open mind on the subject
I haven't actually seen Voltron, so I don't know the character. Plus all of my slots for this year have been filled. I am open to suggestions for next year, though. What flag they flying?
