My local heritage railway.. odd to see it go to Ipstones as they usually only terminate normal services a Leekbrook Jn during non-event days.. The CVR have 3 S160s (out of 6 preserved in the UK) with these being 5197, 6046 and 3278 “Franklin D. Roosevelt” 3278 is the newest S160 to arrive. She arrived in late 2020 and she is currently undergoing an overhaul. She will return in her classic LMR Blue and be numbered as WD701.. when she returns to steam, it’ll be the first time that she would have ran under her own power since the 90s The CVR are currently extending the line back to Leek. Problem is, is that the original Leek station was demolished and now there is Morrisons where the station once was..
Awesome! Yes it was nice that it worked out with running all the way up to Ipstones, especially as this was a mid-week visit. The S160's really are something aren't they, I knew the Churnet Valley Railway had at least two but I didn't know about the third! Yeah it'll be really exciting when the railway extends back into Leek. From what I gathered while I was there it's been a longtime ambition and one that finally seems to be gathering speed so, like I said in the video, I wish them the best of luck with the project. Thanks for watching 😃
Thanks Jon! There's some really incredible railways on the list... all of which I was visiting for the first time so I was like a kid in a candy shop the entire week 😆 Thanks for watching 👍
I have actually seen the same locomotive class up here in the US at the Age of Steam Roundhouse! It’s in a nice Army Green livery, and is the only loco in their collection to be painted in a different color that isn’t black, a really lovely loco! I can only save enough money to come out to the UK someday to see it for myself! I really wanted to say I love your channel with each and every video you create! You give myself and thousands more here in the US so much inspiration, and I couldn’t thank you enough for all the inspiration you’ve given me! I know I’m only 1/14k subscribers, but you’re videos don’t go unappreciated! 😊
Amazing, I have to admit I didn't know any actually ran in the US - previously I thought maybe they were designed specifically for the UK loading gauge and never worked back home! I'm so glad you're enjoying the channel too! I always think of British outline railways being a bit of an isolated interest over here so it's always great to hear from people across the globe who enjoy the silliness I get up to here - it's all a bit mind boggling to be honest 😅 Thanks for watching 👍
@@ThatModelRailwayGuy I honestly thought they never worked here in the US either! I was visiting the roundhouse for the first time with my girlfriend, and out of nowhere I see the locomotive, and it blew me away. Was very lovely to have seen it! You’re very welcome, always a great time watching your videos! :)
Very nice! Always looked like a nice line at Churnet. S160 has a lot of presence too, remember seeing one of its sisters at NYMR yonks ago - think they were shipped in from Poland, Greece and the like. Glad the place is providing some inspiration too, heritage lines have unique characteristics to themselves so you chose a good one to visit I recon.
Glad you enjoyed it Oli! The S160 is definitely a beast and I'm really glad I got to trade behind it. Yes it's nice how all heritage lines have their own atmosphere. There's now videos from the rest of my trip including days at the SVR, EVR and GCR and each railway is completely different. Thanks for watching 😃
Churnet Valley looks very heritage -- narrowed passing loops everywhere. Single track everywhere else. You have to have a double loop option and maybe swap locomotives in the station. Lots of potential for extra track on that that line for sure. The junction giving the chance of another concealed loop. Three train potential maybe in the future for Churnet Valley could be modelled on the track plan of the Model Railway Guy. Look forward to seeing the others and please dont forget to so the ongoing development of your own layout. Hope there has been something by now.
Most of the CVR was double track till beeching, when it was singled for the short run for freight to Oakamoor sand quarry. Much of the track was slewed to ease bends so it changes from the up line to down line as you go down the route. The ipstones loop however was on a single track route up a 1:50 incline. The platform was actually out the loop and where the headshunt for the loco is. Hopefully the rest of this route will be reinstated in a few years. Well that’s the plan once we get to Leek next year.
That's pretty standard for heritage railways in the UK as most were originally double track lines that have only been reinstated as single track with passing loops where needed... although that isn't the case for one of the railways that features later in the series 😉 As for my own layout, this is very much a precursor so more work taking place on the modular layout. As I've just finished up the 009 layout recently I'll need a bit of a break before jumping back in with the 00 layout but I'm hoping to make more progress by the end of the year. Thanks for watching 👍
@@ThatModelRailwayGuy Yes I get that I was suggesting an adaptation for modelling. Here outside of the main cities the mainline is single track with passing loops in odd places for driver exchanges.
The S160 is certainly a sight to see, and I do agree that I hope one gets made in rtr for 00. Churnet looks like a very nice heritage line as well. Cheers
A most thoroughly enjoyable vid, That Model Railway Guy. Splendid views of the S160. Isn't that U.S. whistle something? Imagine listening to that in the background while drifting off to sleep. I do have a heritage route going and have found it's a mix of old and new. Old to attract the visitors, new to show a time frame like cars, advertising, new housing, etc. Also to comply with authorities in railway signage, level crossing signals, and other safety features, disabled parking, modern lighting for example. And of course you need lots of clutter! Tons of it. Great work here, can't wait for the next.
Yes I got a bit carried away with those glory shots of the S160 - but can you blame me 😆 You've hit the nail on the head there with recreating heritage railways. They really are a mix of old and new with clutter and works in progress everywhere mixed in with a working railway. They're often squeezed into small spaces too which is perfect for a model railway where size can often be an issue. Thanks for watching 👍
We've barely even scratched the surface of this series yet! Trust me, some of the countries best heritage railways are still to come. Thanks for watching 😃
Why? What would be the benefit? The Tarmac plant hardly seems like a destination. Meanwhile the current work extending from Leekbrook into the town of Leek itself seems much more useful and has the potential to bring in a lot more people to the railway. Thanks for watching 😃
Yeah I find each railway is unique and has something different to offer. I've passed by the Churnet Valley Railway before and have read about it a bit too, so it was nice to finally experience it for myself. Thanks for watching 😃
@@ThatModelRailwayGuy I know the felling they had 6046 at Didcot last year when it was used for filming the band on brothers sequel (I think) but the day I visited it wasn’t in steam.
just wondering did you visit foxfield light railway whilst you were in the area? i have a feeling you would like it is the steepest heritage line in the uk and has a tone of small industrial locomotives. and when they do galas they go up to the colerie
I really wanted to visit the Foxfield Light Railway but sadly they weren't open at the time! It's a real shame as it looks like one I would have really enjoyed. Thanks for watching 😃
Seems like a nice railway, S160 seems good (though I’m more of an industrials person). The 33 also looked nice mind. I would say that it’s cool to see a tunnel, I’m more used to the Rail over Rail bridge at Blaenavon than tunnels so always good to see a tunnel. Anyway great video and I can’t wait for the next one! Just need an S160 model in 00 now……
Yeah the Churnet Valley Railway is a really nice line, so glad I got to go. I was very glad to see the tunnel too - makes me feel like the one on my own layout is more realistic now! Thanks for watching 😃
@@ThatModelRailwayGuy It still looks odd even as an American locomotive. Of course the smoke box door is American practice with the lugs instead of a dart, however it’s small and offset which breaks the American smoke box door tradition of being centered and larger.
Great research/inspiration project! If you can get your hands on some older OO gauge stock, maybe you can even do the coach shell with open sides (i.e. cut one up - maybe a Tri-ang, model or something)
You know I had been thinking something similar myself! I figure if it all goes horribly wrong I can always drape a tarpaulin over to cover it up! Thanks for watching 😃
I noticed that you said you hoped a model railway manufacturer would make a model of the S160. While in HO instead of 00, Roco makes a DCC Sound model of the S160. Unfortunately, it is in its wartime livery instead of preservation, but from what I've seen they are nice models. Very expensive though. Have a fantastic day!
Yes I did know that there was an HO version out there - though I have to admit I didn't know it was Roco. Personally I think I'll hold out hoping for a 00 gauge version as I think the size is one of the most impressive things about these which would be slightly lost with an HO model on a 00 layout. My money is on Rapido announcing one given their American roots. Possibly Hornby as well given their recent trend of doing big locos... maybe they'll both announce one just to keep the fire between them burning 😆 Thanks for watching 👍
Something I noticed; the volunteers are very distinctly dressed. The platform staff tend to wear black suits and the engineering crews wear the orange high viz. Maybe incorporating that on the layout would make it look more specifically like a heritage line.
Absolutely! In my experience the volunteers tend to wear high-vis when down on the track so that's something I'm definitely looking to incorporate to show it's a modern day layout rather than steam era! You're definitely right about the platform and train staff being more smartly dressed while the loco crews are more often seen in overalls or similar. Thanks for watching 😃
You must have help filming on the NSR ? I mean the shot of the S160 pulling away then cutting to interior train shot(unless you spliced together more than one trip?). Good vid altho not keen on the background music. There is another tunnel at Leek which is partially buried which I got permission to photograph.
It's a bit of both to be honest! I did have a couple of extra camera angles for some bits but mostly it's down to clever editing - I'm sure someone will go through looking for all the continuity differences now 😆 Thanks for watching 👍
Is it called Lima? I assumed that was the builders plate but knowing very little about American locos I'm happy to be proved wrong. Thanks for watching 😃
