For context on the Matuidi situation, there a rule in MLS where you can only sign 3 Designated Players (DP for short) who are essentially players above the salary cap that was created after Beckham joined MLS. The problem is that Miami listed Matuidi as a non-DP in 2020, but it was revealed that his wages were above the salary threshold. To avoid losing Matuidi, Higuain or Roldolfo Pizzaro they sent Argentine youth-international; Matthias Pellegrini out on loan to Fort Lauderdale CF in USL League One. It was a terrible decision since Matuidi was terrible and would retire in 2021, Pizzaro would get loaned back to Monterey with Miami trying desperately to get rid of him (at the time of writing) and Higuain after a terrible first season got better, played alongside his brother (Federico Higuain who spent most of his career in MLS) and had a stellar final season by scoring 16 goals before retiring in 2022.
As an Atlanta guy, love all the shoutouts here. Also, if anyone here finds themselves in Atlanta on a game day, I strongly suggest you go. It's a great atmosphere and a great time, especially for a big match like Orlando.
I’m really surprised you didn’t even bring up the drama behind their name. There was a whole thing with inter-Milan fighting them for putting inter in their name
It definitely is a unique one. It’s probably only rivaled in MLS by the Wanderers of MLS, NYCFC. Who have to this point in their history have played home MLS matches in 7 different stadiums across 4 states(including California) before their actual intended home stadium had even been officially begun construction.
Hey Z, I just wanted to chime in saying that I've really enjoyed these style of videos you've been releasing. I can imagine there was probably some stress at one point when you wanted to branch out into non-FM related videos but they have been wonderful. Keep up the great work!
I am highly convinced that Beckham whispered "Leo you accomplished everything Maradona did except one thing, make a bottom place team win the league cup. But Im not sure you do that at your age anymore"
If you ignore how bad the team/org is it makes sense. Nationally relevant city without being crowded with stars like New York or LA, great climate, huge Spanish speaking population, and short flights(compared to the rest of the league) to both Europe and Argentina. Also I’d imagine Beckham being the owner was a big part of it somehow.
Maybe because he can walk down the street without being recognised? As a European I was shocked when my cousin told me Canelo Alvarez lived in his neighbourhood
I bet you 10 bucks had Messi moved back to Barca they'll swell more just to pay for Messi and then remove all the upcoming young talents except for that one guy living in Camp Nou medical room
A small correction: The 2014 announcement by Beckham wasn't a true expansion announcement. Beckham's contract clause to get a MLS team did have an expiration date. It was an announcement that Beckham was exercising that option and basically giving a stamp of MLS approval to let the governments know that a stadium deal gets them an official expansion announcement. That official announcement came much later.
Thanks announcement for announcement clearing announcement that announcement up announcement. (Hope you see that this isn't a dig at you personally but about that messed up situation around the team. Announcement.)
FC Cincinnati started out life like Orlando did in the USL Championship. I remember watching an Open Cup game on ESPN broadcast from Nippert Stadium at the time.

Watch Club Brugge build a stadium. It has been 15 years since their first plans. And couple of months ago, after 4 projects, their latest plans got approved to build a new stadium next to the old one on the old training pitches. But got rejected because of a local who lives next to the old stadium complained... In 2 years, Club Brugge will not be allowed to play their champions league games at the old stadium anymore because it won't be up to code.
I don't think people who don't watch MLS understand how bad Miami actually are. Messi won't fix their defence or midfield. He can only do so much on his own.

As an Orlando fan, I couldn't believe how easy Ojeda's goal was in the match earlier this year, ha ran right between 2 defenders and neither picked him up and instead were marking nobody ball-watching
Big difference between OCSC and Miami is that Orlando had to have their stadium deal in place before we were awarded a team. It just took two seasons to build after joining MLS. Miami was awarded a team without question and no stadium deal in place.
What a great video! Most amusing history, I must say. Have you ever read Dave Barry regarding Miami politics? The mayors are frequently criminally charged, found guilty, jailed, then released after a few years, then they become mayor again. Never a dull moment. I'm also looking forward to seeing Miami FC with Messi! And, look, it rhymes! Maybe the fans will have some cool chants 😁
As someone who lives in Miami and has followed this saga, I'd like to further reiterate one of the points of this video: Miami FC. Not only did Miami FC get founded after the announcement and start playing games before Inter Miami, they also won titles, back to back league titles in 2017. Not to mention, Miami FC has been playing in the general suburb area of University Park by FIU and they've always been localized in Miami during their entire period. Even though Messi is coming to Miami, I still feel apathetic to the team and I'd rather cheer on Miami FC. Don't get me wrong, Messi is a phenomenal player, rightfully so the GOAT, nut the whole mess Inter Miami has had has just made me uninterested to follow their games.
Hi, I'm bit lose with Inter Miami stadium situation and like to ask you about this. Why didn't they push the idea to play in FIU Football Stadium at the first place? While Miami FC relatively easy to find solution about their stadium and can play there

The Mas brothers bought in (primary stake) and then immediately looked for new land because...drum roll...MLS stadiums are mere anchors for bigger land deals. Development around the stadium is the game that most investor-owners are up to. While Beckham is running the soccer team, the primary owners are working on leveraging it as the "hook" for greater wealth.
You forgot about the issue with the ground being toxic and requiring them to dig out out way more material than normal, dispose of it properly then put more material back into the site....

Not to mention he seems to be trying to make a Brand for himself after he retires for which the MLS is a better "Retirement League"
You should have mentioned that the stadium's ownership group is not the team's ownership group despite what was communicated. This will make a situation feasible as you mentioned for that other team - in the end there might be no team but a stadium ;)
So if Inter Miami exists and Messi could have the same deal as Becks, will we see the creation of AC Miami, owned by Messi and plays at the same stadium?
