The problem is that so many of these homes were not owned by residents, they were renters or trying to buy. They are being evicted one after another, foreclosed on, and properties just taken from them and sold off to the investors that have been planning this 15 minute smart city for years.

The ‘non owners’ that are being listed here are the locals, who can’t even afford rent, but they want to tell land owners how to rebuild. They don’t deserve anything.

People don’t often agree. So we formed government. Government on Maui is composed of 10 elected officials. They were all elected in County wide elections. By the people. So, now the Mayor has appointed 5 other people to represent the people? We already elected 10 people to represent the people. Those 10 elected officials (government) ARE the people. Doesn’t “listen to the people” mean EXACTLY the same thing as “listen to the local government”? Are we somehow choosing other people? Isn’t that just a different government?

Are state and county officials having public meetings so that the residents of Lahaina/Maui county can express their opinions, concerns, suggestions? Why are these architects coming in and ASSUMING that they are going to build something better. Look at the example of Waimanalo and other agricultural settings on Oahu..There is room for BOTH city and agricultural land. There are still plenty of existing tourist areas in west Maui-Kaanapali, Napili, Kapalua..why not let the residents of Lahaina decide what THEY WANT? Why not start over and recreate Lahaina into agricultural land that can provide food and water for itself and neighboring communities with selected areas for eco tourism? What is the benefit of creating a “smart city” anyway? How will power be generated to run this type of city? And can one entity have the ability to shut it (the entire city) off at a moment’s notice? Just saying…

Let's talk about the fueling station,! Even if a boat owner managed to get his boat out of the harbor and avoided blowing up they can not return to their slip because the Lahaina Harbor is closed. There is more than a twenty year wait-list for a slip in lahaina harbor. How much will the kick backs go up to, to secure a new lease on a slip in Lahaina Harbor?
This is a disgusting, unacceptable , continued, abuse of power by DLNR.

As long as there is money from the U.S. Government to construct a Lahaina that has the benefits of being safer and energy efficient, why not take advantage of that willingness to help rebuild? So many communities that are experiencing flooding and other disasters would give a lot to be able to rebuild in that manner. Of course, the residents should have a say in what rebuilding takes place. But arguing about the terms used is only going to delay that process, and in the meantime, funds will dry up, especially if the Republicans have their cost cutting proposals passed.

Taking care of Americans in disasters is one of the things they all agree the government should be spending our money on. The main issue I think everyone can agree with is that we should not have 5000 page spending bills. They lump all this spending into one big bill so that when someone says why are we spending this money on x everyone says that person wants americans to starve etc. It's obviously working because you fell for it hook line and sinker.
