What is a Relay used for?

  • In part one of this video I explain what the common relay is used for. In the most simple terms an automotive relay is an electronically operated switch. The type most commonly used in the automotive industry is an electro-mechanically operated switch. They are found in all types of vehicles - cars, trucks, vans, trailers and boats. They employ an electromagnet device to mechanically manoeuvre a switch to make or break an electrical circuit. The type of relay most frequently used in the automotive industry is the small cube shaped unit known as a standard relay or a mini relay.
    The most common application of automotive relays is to switch a high current circuit using a low current circuit. This application comes into play whereby an in-line switch does not have the capacity to handle the current required to switch a high current electrical system. For example, this scenario could be observed during the operation of a set of high powered lamps. If the lamps are wired to light when the headlights are activated they could exceed the capacity of the existing loom set-up. An automotive relay can solve this problem.

    I cannot thank you enough for your splendid videos.
    They have helped me tremendously to comprehend devices, design parameters as well as general knowledge in things automotive. This is especially true with regards to Porsches in particular.
    Very well done indeed. You've been very helpful in my decision making process in the selection of my next used Cayman.
    Very much appreciated, THANK YOU again and please keep up the stellar work!
    Best!

    From what i remember from school,
    Control high with low. In automotive uses, you don't want a ECU to control high amounts of current, i remember hearing more than .5 amps i believe is too much for a ecu to handle so using a ecu to control the low current side to trigger the relay to control the switched side/high current side.

    So basically they are heavy duty switches then.

    So can we use relay to light a sparkplug?

    So, I am a little confuse here, but where does the big load side go on? Does the big load go to 85,86 of the relay while the small switch connects to 30,87 of the relay? Or does the big load go to 30,87 of the relay while the small switch connects to the power side of 85,86 of the relay? Also I am guessing you have a relay with big enough current specifications for big load side right?

    • @GarageTechAutomotive
      @GarageTechAutomotive  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey, the big load goes on 87 and then to a separate earth. The switch goes on 86. Depending on what your load is then yes you may need a bigger relay that can take a higher load, like a relay for a coolant fan will have a higher load than say a horn. If you haven’t done so already, watch my other video on how a really works, that explains the wiring side of things. Hope that helps 👍🏼

    I purchased a Toyota IQ 2009 push start button last year it was good and all ( its a used car) but i didnt drive it for a little while and now that i'm ready to drive it, its not starting..... Couldnt be the battery because i purchased a new one when i got the car, i just replaced the gas pump and there's petrol in it....... When i push the button to start it stuff shows up on the dashboard but when i try to start the car its making a clicking sound repeatedly then its like its dead again. What could be the issue??

      Although you put a new battery on, from what you say, it’s sound like a classic case of a flat battery.

    For LED fogs I have a switch rated 10 amps.
    Any point in a relay here ?

    • @GarageTechAutomotive
      @GarageTechAutomotive  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Thomas, Important thing is calculating what the total current draw will be in the circuit, you’ll need to know what the amps are of the fog lights first. If you have done this already and it’s less than 10 amps, just make sure the wiring you use exceeds this. A relay helps to use smaller wiring and switch to turn on a bigger/higher load circuit. Also, make sure you have a fuse wired in, otherwise it could 🔥🔥🔥 good luck 🤞🏼

      @thomasjordan5578 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GarageTechAutomotive previously installed aux fuse box, easy power connect. Fuse is 10 amp, fogs did not come with intel but I’m thinking they’re low current. Wires from box are 12 ga others are 14 ga.
      Junction and switch fitted in waterproof Bakelite box, i could probably get a relay in there too but won’t if there is no reason.

    How much do u know.

    Why do I need an "electronically operated switch" for my lights when I am using a manually operated switch already? I just want on and off, so why do I need an extra switch and twice as much wiring for a relay? Someone messed with my fog light relays and now my truck's battery is dead all the time, the lights don't work and even the illuminated turn on switch doesn't work correctly. Can I bypass the relay to just have on and off? I don't care if the turn on switch lights up or not. What happens if I bypass the relay and just have fuses where they're needed?

    • @GarageTechAutomotive
      @GarageTechAutomotive  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, the relay is there to enable you to switch from a low current circuit (the switch side), to a high current circuit (the fog lamps). This means you can use small switches and thinner wires within the vehicle and then larger wires closer to the fog lamps. The fog lamps will take quite a bit of current (amps). without the relay the switch could burn out or the wires could get really hot, melt or catch fire. All depends on the current load the switch and wires are able to take.

    • @jamesmkay
      @jamesmkay ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GarageTechAutomotive so if the wires are the same on either side of the relay, does it still have use?

    • @GarageTechAutomotive
      @GarageTechAutomotive  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jamesmkay hey, this depends on the switch that you are using. The switch may not be designed to carry the high amount of current which will be drawn. If it’s a small switch it’s likely the contacts inside will burn out.

    I’m still not getting why your switch inside the cab wouldn’t do the same thing (on/off) on its own without the relay. And why the relay would be needed

      If switch can’t handle current the relay saves it.

      If you send the main circuit direct to a switch that sends directly to the receiver, then that switch can always be turned on/off even if the car is not turned on, unlike if using a relay the switch can only be used if the car is turned on.
